What are your hopes for the raid version of this iconic weapon?
Season of DiscoveryIsn't his story later wrapped up in Scarab Lord questline?
Yes it is.
Does it though? Last I remember it brings you to a guy in winterspring and ends there.
Yep the chain is a dead end
The chain acts as a teaser to the emerald gem from the scepter of the shifting sands, when you fight Eranikus in Moonglade
They didn't do a very good job of conveying that, then.
I mean, it was all the way back in 2004 lol can you blame them
Considering there's plenty of other quests that convey such things fine, yes I can blame them
TBH I only did a few steps of that quest back in vanilla days but I'd be willing to bet most current players have no idea what that quest entails. Could be very interesting to see that roll back around.
you should turn into a dragon.
realistically, a thrash would be cool.
Chance on hit: breathe fire
Has a 3x multiplier if under the effects of dragon breath chili
Turn it around dragon breath chilli have a X3 modigier
Horrible idea lol, swap it around and sure :p
Kind of like those fist weapons from ZG? That would be sick.
exactly where my head was at, yeah.
turn you into some kind of nature dealing green dragon or infuse you with power, add nature dmg to all your attacks, idk. nature would probably suck for ST cause i assume some nature immune mobs, but something in that regard.
Chance on hit, become retail Dracthyr for 30 seconds. Imagine the salt and tears.
A neat proc with minimal effort from the dev team would be a green recolor of mages dragons breath ability that does aoe fire/nature damage without being too excessive
Was thinking similar. Definitely a damage proc. Or even a stat buff proc like the hunters STV bow
yea, make Thunderfury at home. except actually. not whatever they tried to do with Electrocutioner’s Needle.
Thunderfury at home 😭
Noticing it isn't unique... wonder if anyone has ever dual wielded two
I did on my rogue in 2019 classic. It took until like AQ40 to get the 2nd one. Maximum drip for sure.
Did they ever double proc or does that not happen?
It can. You can have a maximum of 6 dragonlings at once: 3 from each.
Sounds like a hunter weapon
My dad, who played a hunter, used one.
That sounds cool as hell
Add in Barov Peasant Caller and the Timbermaw trinket and bedazzle people with your summoned army.
Hahaha yes true, and then also the dogwhistle from SM and the rare mob item from Duskwood that summons a Felhound. That combined with being a Hunter and you've got potentially 11 mobs fighting for you at a time. Idk if that's actually possible though, but would be cool.
I think you can also get a thornling thingy from DM if you wanna really max out - it shouldn't share a cooldown with any other summons.
That’s so cool
It really is, I'm sad I will never be able to pick it up haha
Imagine if you had farmed Felstriker instead
I went back in WOTLK and got it for my Fan of Knives spec.
A warrior in my guild did in Vanilla in like 2005... Noone really knew any min-maxing yet and the few warriors who did DPS in our raid all used 2h weapons (we were not very good, I was a hunter and beating everyone)
This guy comes in and everyone laughs at him for using 1hs and he beats everyone... maybe he was onto something
I mean they are no dal'rends but really it's not bad for stepping into MC.
Noone really knew any min-maxing yet
Yes some people did, and the warriors using 2handers were min maxing.
Dual wield Fury wasn't better than 2h arms until a certain patch in classic. A lot of people don't actually know this and think no one back then had a clue.
BT worked like a victory rush untill i think BWL patch, then it did 30% of ap damage and got slowly buffed to todays value
Yeah I'm not actually sure on what the changes were, but 2h arms > dual wield Fury until I think the BWL patch. Kungen talks about this in one of his videos, saying people are laughing at some of the old videos because the warriors are using 2h arms, but if you went back to that era of classic and tried playing a warrior like you do now... you would be useless.
I can tell you! Patch 1.9, the release of AQ, brought the fundamental change that +hit on gear finally contributed to the dual wield miss penalty. Before that you would always have a 24% chance to miss when dual-wielding. Essentially rendering dw fury completely useless. So yeah, what you were saying is absolutely true. People weren't stupid. 2h was the way to go throughout all MC, BWL and ZG. This is why Ashkandi, Zin'Rokh or UTB were highly sought after.
And basically Bliz overshot the mark and never corrected it until TBC ;p which is why we have warriors doing way, way too much dps in classic.
The glory days of classic bloodthirst... It was insane in pvp, and felt amazing just one shotting mobs in the open world with lucky crits.
But when naxx was out, we were in BWL still and they were using 2h. Trust me when I say noone in my guild had a clue about min-maxing. We used like 5 prot warriors in MC until TBC launched, never killed Nef, cleared AQ40 or even stepped foot in Naxx.
A lot of people don't actually know this and think no one back then had a clue.
There were plenty of people that had a clue, they were usually in the top couple of guilds on each server. Many had experience in games like EQ or Asherons Call prior to WoW
I raided with guys that ran spreadsheets and would spend hours testing weapon speeds with different buffs or setting stopwatches to see how often certain procs would trigger. That was the sort of shit that got me truly interested in the game beyond anything else and was how I ended up being a game tester for various other studios over the last fifteen years. I’ve alpha tested games alongside Ions Elitist Jerks before he joined Blizzard, received Xmas cards personally signed by teams and even chipped in for cookie drives and pizza drives for devs when they were in pre—launch crunch time. All from the friends I made during vanilla and while actively participating in forums for games I had interests in. Since 2007 I have been on FnF/Alpha for games like Rift, GW2, Warhammer, Conan, Elder Scrolls, Crowfall, wildstar, SWTOR and a few others.
I've actually gotten worse at the game since being younger, I was about rank 21 rogue earlier in the phase, and I only got 1 run on Therma/Menagerei with DMF buff so far. Loads of people back in the day were very good at the game, sort of frustrating seeing so many retail players claim we couldn't play, while simultaneously themselves being able to get a simple classic wow rogue rotation correct.
I think you might actually know someone from my previous guild, think he was an old EJ member.
I've actually gotten worse at the game since being younger…
Ugh, haven’t we all?
I wasn’t anything super fantastic back then, but I was able to with some consistency win in 1v1s back then, got myself up to a couple ranks shy of the mount I think (I think I was able to get the full PvP blue set before they removed the restrictions?). I made it to Duelist in one of the later arena seasons in TBC. I raided everything in vanilla (except for Naxx) and managed to remain one of the top DPS.
Now? Oof. I just hit 38 on my first character. I (finally) got my first PvP kill in STV while questing solo there. I haven’t even set foot in SM, and I don’t even have Sheathe of Light rune yet (tried doing the stormguard quests earlier but taking on a single elite by myself took way too long). Oh, and still rocking 90% of the gear I had at 25, including chaussis of Westfall and verigan’s fist.
sort of frustrating seeing so many retail players claim we couldn't play
It’s most likely a self projection because they couldn’t play the game very well back then therefore nobody else could have possibly known either because they are the protagonist in their story.
I've actually gotten worse at the game since being younger
If you’re talking about PvP it’s an age thing. I experienced this hard in GW2 structured PvP (like arenas but cooler), Conan Exiles PvP servers and FPS games where my reaction time got a bit slower as I got older. PvE wise I find pushing new content in the initial discovery phase (before the strategies hit the web) is fine as long as I can react fast enough to the mechanics, the mechanics themselves rarely surprise me.
The reaction time is a lot to do with developing various RL injuries over the years like Ulna nerve trapping from sitting at the desk too long (my career has been a desk job for the last decade as well). Stretching, eating healthy and keeping fit is more important than ever.
I think you might actually know someone from my previous guild, think he was an old EJ member
It’s been a while since I was part of that scene now so my memory would need to be jogged. I probably only remember 3-4 names of people I tested with back then and lost contact with them about 5 years ago due to RL/Having kids etc.
Using a 2H at that point wasn't really this sweaty min/maxing though. That was the one and only way to make the class playable. There were exactly 2 builds at the time: 31/20 (MS/Enrage) and 31/5/15 (MS/Cruelty + some combo of Defiance, Imp Shield Block and Last Stand). Warrior was widely viewed as one of the worst classes and the only way to do any actual damage was with Mortal Strike on a slow 2 hander. Bloodthirst was an ability that let you truck something really hard after a killing blow and also favored 2 handers. There was no shield slam either, just "Shield Discipline" which gave you some extra block and had your Shield Bash hit a bit harder. You could not play a warrior without Mortal Strike. Take a look at how bad it was: https://classicwowtalents.appspot.com/index.html?talent=1124125_1
Set Bonus as a Weapon / Trinket combo 2/2 that turns you into a dragon occasionally (like Deathbringer's Will transform)
Okayyy you’re onto something
But make it so you don't aggro other dragons when near them. Really sad the gnomer trogg trinket doesn't make you blend in so they don't attack you.
one of the few reasons I'm hyped for ST to be a raid is hoping they do justice to this weapon
I roll shaman and I just appreciate it
Was always a delight to see someone wear it
ST being the raid is not confirmed though. So don't hype yourself up too much.
It's just as likely that we get Karazhan Crypts or a new SM wing as the raid.
During Blizzcon they teased us with 3 images in this order: Gnomer, SM, Kara Crypts. Gnomer became a raid in P2, so we could just get a new SM wing as the raid in P3 and later Kara Crypts as a raid in P4.
The datamining that lead to the rumor of ST being the new raid isn't really hard proof. We know for a fact that the next raid will be a 20-man but the datamining saw ST increase from 5man to 10man. Phase 3 might also have 2 new raids, a 10man ST and a 20man SM/Kara.
I would prefer a new SM wing or Kara or something novel. ST for 20 man gets fuzzy at some points like the corridors and troll bosses since those platforms are kinda small for 20 man
but if that's what we get, there are some iconic pieces like the sword that would be great to see adjusted
It has been confirmed. The devs said it was. What are you talking about
Where did they say that? It hasn't been posted anywhere that I've seen.
Edit: As far as I can tell, no dev for Classic WoW has said that Sunken Temple is the phase 3 raid. Some datamining found that there's a version with a raid lockout ID and 10 player cap now but Blizzard said the phase 3 raid will be 20-player. Take the datamining with a huge grain of salt, it could end up being the case but datamining doesn't mean that much, just that it's something they were or are considering.
Edit 2: Now it's official.
it is 100% happening, the datamine of latest content even had a raid-id for ST on the 3 day lockout
One of the best 1h sword skin in the game if not the best.
I hope they don’t change the skin.
They didn't for any of the gnomeregan stuff, so they probably won't here either.
The model is pretty plain to me. One hand swords like CTS, quel’serrar, and Maladath look way cooler imo
I hope it’s not a chance on hit, it just summons an emerald whelp when you equip it.
They’ll probably make it a main hand only but I’d like to duel wield them too for double whelps.
MANY WHELPS
Hahaha
I can't even equip it and I still have high hopes for the potential coolness of this weapon.
15 min cd: turns you into a green dragonkin for 20 sec that has increased attack power and spell damage? Maybe a bit much but I think it could work.
unrelated - great username
Thank you, I made it in 7th grade when being thicc was considered a funny thing in and of itself
to finally drop 1 time in a wow lifetime
Two ideas:
Since I’d love to see an item eventually get modeled after Deathbringer’s Will, why not this? I’ll go with basically what others have suggested. It turns you into a big green dragonkin and buffs your stats for X seconds. Nothing super cool but if they make it similar to the effect from the fist set in ZG, but with a higher chance to proc, it would be a lot of fun. Turning into a giant kitty was hilarious in Vanilla, unfortunately the proc/effect was terrible. However since people have been suggesting something similar to that idea, I’d also be interested in a far more unique item that’s open to more classes.
Maybe have it modeled after Benediction/Anathema. Something that can be toggled to benefit healing or DPS. I think it could be fun to make the proc chance allow you to drop an egg that either hatches after a few seconds or when it is stepped on by anything. It would do aoe damage or healing when hatched and then damage or heal for X seconds while it’s active. Maybe there could be a healing/damage modifier based on how early it’s broken or a bonus if allowed to hatch on its own!
Idk, just spitballing. I just hope they change it from the current boring proc.
I would change it from being a proc to an on use ability to summon the whelp, so you can decide when to pull it out. When the whelp comes out, it buffs any damage you or your pets do by X% and heals you for Y% health every second for its duration.
Honestly, the proc was pretty good as-is. Would be nice if it had some stats on it! Even just Stam & Hit or Crit would be awesome.
SOD dream for that weapon, is that the helps spawn with sunglasses and a cigar. And instead of helping you start to complain because it's their weekend off
Very good idea!
Remember it dropping back in original being like 9 or 10 years old, insane adrenaline rush.
Turns you into a green Dragonspawn for 20 seconds (Proc chance = ezpz) (ICD 1 Minute 45 seconds).
While in dragonkspawn form your Strength is increased by 35. Dargon is strong. Dargon hit hard.
While in dragonspawn form you gain 800 armor. Getting dragon = scales = more armor. Perfect sense baby.
Your attacks cleave. (Melee and Special attacks hit the nearest target for the same damage). I feel like almost all dragons always cleave lol.
Upgrade the weapon DPS to align with the current power scaling or whatever.
Could be a cool tank weapon or could be a cool DPS weapon.
https://wowpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Dragonspawn what they look like. We already can use their models in vanilla (horde onyxia questline).
Yes that is what I was thinking as well
I ninja looted this on my hunter when I was 10 years old. I don't play SoD now, but I have an interesting nostalgic urge to relive that experience...
Well now hunters can actually be competent with it haha. But yeah I can imagine that feeling bad for the rogues or warriors in the group
I managed to actually get Dragon's Call in TBC while leveling. The Whelp AI isn't great, and the chance-on-hit summon had me getting the Whelp on the final strike of combat far more often than not.
I would say that for a raid version of this item, turn it from a chance-on-hit to something like the Icecrown Citadel staff Abracadaver, where it's a regular weapon with stats like stam/str and crit/hit/attack power, then give it an on-use to summon the whelp instead of a chance-on-hit. Hell, a better idea might be to straight up not include the whelp summon at all and have something more along the lines of a chance-on-hit to deal nature damage with the animation being a whelp instantly appearing and shooting an acid breath attack.
As the item currently is, it's a white item with an RNG Scarlet Monastery Dog Whistle
I hope they make it a spell sword for mages and warlocks since we have so little of those
A Summon Eranikus type ability once a day, like a Final Fantasy 7 spell
Like summoning bahamut? Haha
I was thinking of that myself. But I think if you can summon a dragon bigger than a dragonkin, you are gonna be able to fuck something up somehow.
Turns you INTO an emerald whelp! Nah jk but I think it’d be awesome if this weapon (or some weapon eventually) affects and alters a spell based on the wielder’s class. Even if it just makes it sparkle different. and summon a green welp of course
I hope it spawns deathwimg ngl
What font are you using here?
This is taken from wowhead lol
Hope the whelps are high enough level to be relevant for a while. I love everything about this weapon so hopefully they'll do it justice. And keep it non-unique for DW!
Id want it to proc more and have you get several, like a small dragon army
You can already get 3 with one and 6 with two
I really hate that sunken temple seems to be the expected next raid, I hate that place. Just endless hallways and stairs of the exact same design. Mara at least has personality.
That hatred is why they´re doing it, the level up raids are basically intended for dungeons most only ran once for quests.
I know why they chose it, but it's not like people grinded Mara for the exp either (well, mage boosting aside).
There's literally one item off princess people really went back there for, and it seems like a missed opportunity to use a dungeon with such a dull atmosphere as ST as your raid setting when such a better one exists based solely on the existence of blackstone ring.
Mind you, changing ST into a raid also means they inevitably touch up the Lvl 50 Class questlines that send you in there.
Still agree with Mara to some degree aswell, but relatively speaking that tiny bit puts more longevity on Mara than ST having just kind of nothing beyond the quests.
St is awesome, idk what people are on about
I came here to say I saw it drop on my shaman the first time in 2007 while dorking around solo during TBC and fell in love with it. I saw it drop again on my warrior in 2019 Classic, but lost it to a paladin (I was tanking of course). Stopped playing Classic short thereafter, totally not salty about it. I do hope it makes a great comeback for you SoD folks.
Just more stats. The proc is pretty awesome as is, wouldn't want that changed.
I really hope they will remove the pet summon and replace it with something useful. Like summoning a pet but instead of fighting, which is always a terrible idea, they buff you.
"Calls forth an emerald dragon's spirit that heals (15health/s) you and your party, increase your magic resistance by 25, and increase your (sword wielder) melee attack by 10%"
A bit covoluted I know but those are minors buffs that are yet better than a whelp fighting for you. They usually do terrible damage and are easy to kill
CoH turn into one of those beefy green wyrms get some juicy stats
Having the summoned dragon do anything at all would be a start. I got this in classic and the summon is close to useless, it just feels like it doesn’t work. It was a great weapon to get as a 52 rogue for the damage alone but the proc was so disappointing it really took the edge off. Also looks amazing.
Just make it on use with 3 min CD, that would be cool
Make it 2.8 or 1.4 for offhand :-)
Confirmation that it's real?
IDK how many times I ran ST trying to add that bad boy to the ol bank collection.
To actually look raid like in appearance LOL
The fact the purple weapons in gnomer couldnt have some sort of glow to them is hilarious, Electrocutioners needle doesnt spark LOL
Yeah I agree on that front haha
I had no idea this existed holy shit
Really? Every 50+ Vanilla dungeon has 2 epics obtainable from bosses with a 1% chance except LBRS which only had 1.
This is one of two from ST, the second being a chest made (I think) for priests, since it has like 30 spirit lmao.
Equip: +1% hit to all spell, range, and melee attacks. Chance on hit: Whelpling summon.
Make it a shaman weapon
i hope it makes your character scream "LETS RAGNAROK" and spawn in a bunch of dragons which is a severly high dps increase
If we're getting revamped useful versions of old epics, I'm holding out for a decent Lion Horn of Stormwind please.
This is not a world drop. It's from sunken temple. Meaning it gets revamped
True, this is guaranteed to get revamped. But I can still dream.
Yes I also hope they revamp world drops. But before that, they have to revamp crafted items. I know they already did some blacksmithing ones but seriously. Who tf wants to make a leatherworking piece that gives spirit?
Whatever it is I hope it's a hunter weapon
The ironic part is as of right now this will be literally a hunter weapon as rogues can only use mutilate and still do garbage damage
I hope that it drops 🙏
I have it on my era rogue and I don’t think I will ever replace it. Love that little dragon.
"not usable by warriors" taking our fun away just like manual crowd pummeler
Chance on hit: Put a target to sleep for 3 seconds, if the target cannot be put to sleep it will be ignited by emerald flames for 12 seconds and will burn every 3 seconds for X amount of nature damage. (sleep since its an emerald dream effect)
They'll make it 1.7 speed so only prot pallies want to use it
would like to see it more of a tank weapon or a spellcaster weapon.
that its in BRD instead
I fucking hope we get brd on a weekly lockout but all signs are currently alluding to ST
give us MaRAIDon
that it one shots any player or npc that attacks you.
Summons a cat companion that buffs you with wf, lasts until you die
Bruh no way we'll let you be the only ones to have it
I wouldn’t mind seeing the Eranikus questline finished.
EDIT: I was meaning the questline involving the Chained Essence of Eranikus, which I thought was a dead end.
