My co worker has fraternal twins and asked for a cake for their birthdays. I decided to make them their own personal cake but I wanted them to look similar to match the twin theme. I love the way they both came out, but is the blue acceptable for a boy or more for a girl?
Do you think the blue cake can pass for a boy?
Birthday CakesI came here to make the same joke.
Cute cake though.
And you both beat me to the same.
But the cakes do look great!
Came to make sure this was top comment
This exactly 😄
They both look amazing. The blue is perfect
Looks great!!
Entirely unrelated but this reminded me of my little brother asking for a singular pink frosted flower on his cake for me. The rest were blue for him. I want to say he was 4ish and just the sweetest kid.
It’s cake and it’s beautiful, doesn’t matter which gender gets it.
but IS IT CAKE!?!!!
Idk...but it taste like it 😏
Exactly. I had to double check that I wasn't in r/pointlesslygendered.
Thank you for the recommendation! I'm very excited about this one.
You're welcome! :)
No. It looks like a cake.
If the blue cake can pass for a boy what?
A boy cake! Duh!
I think it’s totally fine. But people get weird about hyper-gendering stuff for kids.
No, it’s a cake.
Boys are people.
My 11 year old said he would love that blue cake for him so I say you are fine!
They are both very pretty! The cascade of adornment on the cakes gives the illusion that they are tiered cakes. Excellent work!
We’re gendering cakes now?
Yeah, I've had customers request cakes without rosettes because "they're flowers and the cake is for a man". It's literally a swirl with a star nozzle! Doesn't look anything like a flower especially when it's going around the top of the cake! Also people who walk in, looking at our non-custom, standard cakes and say "I'm looking for a cake for a man". Apparently flavours are gendered as well?!
That’s bizarre. It’s cake.
Here's a sneak peek of /r/pointlesslygendered using the top posts of the year!

Yes
I like the purple more, but only because its purple.
And colors are not for genders.
Boys like things that sparkle and roses, too.
Funny thing happened at work. I have a couple rainbow things in my cubical and someone mentioned they didn't know I was an LGBTQIA2+ ally and I told them "oh, I just like rainbow things. That's not meant to represent that. Then last week I wore an ally LGBTQIA2+ shirt to work and they said "Wait, you said you weren't an ally". I had to explain "No, I said those weren't about being an ally. I just like rainbows. Also pink. But also green and blue and yellow".
Moral of the story. People can like things and gendering/identifying things like colors, is stupid.
Especially for a 1 year old. The only ones who will have problem with a 1 year olds cake being too feminine are people who already are problems.
Blue and green, very boy! Don’t over think it.
For a second I thought you thought the purple cake was green. LOL
Looks more like a cake than a boy, but maybe he just has no arms or legs?
It’s great for a boy , why do you think it’s not ?
They’re adorable cakes! Don’t worry so much about the ‘color is for one gender’ stereotype. Just let the kids enjoy whichever cake they want.
Blue is the standard ‘boy colour’, that’s why you chose it right?
So yeah it looks fine.
Ask the twins’ mom. She knows what colors her kids like best and who’d like which cake better. The blue one would be fine for a boy, to answer the question you had in the title specifically.
I wish the blue had the purple and the other one was pink and green. Because I love that jazz cup color scheme.
It's a cake.
They are both beautiful! Blue one does look traditionally masculine.
I’m so shocked you are targeting the blue one for this question. While I agree colors aren’t gendered I for sure would expect someone to ask about the purple and pink. Honestly both of these are amazing and I wouldn’t see either of them as being gender coded just two really nice cakes and to me they kind of have like a land and see theme in there.
Yeah. Old fashioned now though, to assign colours just because it's for a boy or girl. Although there's nothing wrong with those colours for either! They look lovely. I wouldn't worry about it.
This is a Certified Reddit Moment.
Of course
For sure
…are you trying to get it locker room access?
They look amazing! I once messed up red velvet cupacakes and they came out pink. I was practicing making pretty flowers on them and then realized they were for my son. He told me “they look great and we are boys, we eat everything” 🤣
Blue cake looks awesome and yes, perfect for a boy. I thought planets, solar system right away.
Are we gendering cakes now
Now?!?
yes. both look real good
My grandsons like weird colors. Grape purple and orange and the other likes teal and red. Your cake is gorgeous
Doesn’t matter. They both look great. Hand over the cakes and don’t tell the kids which is which. They’ll fight over the cake they want.
(Hint: it’ll be the purple one because purple.)
I’m not sure what’s up with these responses, but if you’re looking for “boy color” and “girl color” then blue and purple fit the bill.
Since when is blue not the “boy” color for the gender conforming obsessed crowd?
Right? Why is this so critical? I see blue and pink.I think boy and girl. When did it become so wrong to think like this? And if I'm wrong about what is for who, ok, it's fine pick whatever color you want, jeez.
The thing is, I haven't changed, the rest of the world did, I'm just trying to keep up and believe people should be free to Live and let Live. It has become evil to be traditional at all these days, even with simple stuff, like a cake.
I don’t mean this in a derogatory way but I think you might be online too much, either that or your irl social circles are… unique. Most places are still very traditional so I’m unsure how you came to the conclusion that being traditional is thought of as evil.
You’ll notice even in this comment section there are very few people speaking negatively about being traditional, if any. The “worst” comments I can find are just saying things like, “colors don’t have gender” or “we’re gendering cakes now?” Which are really not anti-traditional lol, they’re just sharing their opinion about the OP’s question in a blunt way.
Some Reddit comments pointing out that colors for genders are arbitrary, is not at all the same as it becoming evil to be traditional.
And the only reason people are joking is because the phrasing of the question is bad.
I honestly not sure if we are taking about the same thing. My comment simply meant that it's my first thought when I see the colors, and that is probably just because of the times that I grew up in. I in no way made judgment on anything, in fact I pointed out that people are freeto live how they want. I got a reply that I sound hostile. Lol, hostile because I admit I think of boy when I see blue? Where is this hostility? But this is reddit. No matter what you say, however politely someone will find something wrong. You have to type a huge comment like this, and then still be misunderstood somehow. I guess I dont see why EVERYTHING has to be such a big deal all the time.
Also, your conclusion of my on line presence is the complete opposite. I'm not on line at all, and belong to no social networks other than reading on reddit for a few specific topics, go ahead and check. Goldfish and cats mostly. I have had a few nice conversations, but otherwise I stink at social media and so should just stay off it because it can be a stressful waste of time. You see, I live my life in the real world, out talking to real people, i do not work from home, i like getting involved in my community and am quite busy. If there was no internet tomorrw it wouldnt change things too much for me, just a little less convenient. We get used to these things so quickly.
You sound like a hostile person
Pink used to be for boys and blue was for girls in the past, and then at some point it switched. Color is arbitrary.
I don't think this person's comments sound hostile at all, fwiw.
Ha ha nobody understood your response and downvoted you. OP’s post is actually a trick question. They said “fraternal twins”. Fraternal twins can be 2 boys, 2 girls, or a girl and a boy. It simply means that the twins are not identical. Look out, the term “fraternal” must be sexist.
Lol just look at those downvotes go. 😅 Honestly, maybe I suck at writing or something, cause I'm still not sure what I did. Oh wel🤷♂️
Blue has always been the color for boys. Look at any baby catalogue/website and you will traditionally blue is for boys and bunk is for girls.
EDIT: color shouldn’t matter, everyone is correct about engendering cakes, but historically this is how it has been and I’m sure anyone that live in Merica still believes this.
Historically, this is incorrect. It's only since the 1940s. Prior, pink was a boy's color
https://www.britannica.com/story/has-pink-always-been-a-girly-color
you are being willfully ignorant. this shift happened between the late 19th century and the mid 20th century. before that colors were way way less important, but there was a tendency to have the colors exactly switched. go to any catholic church. look at a colored Maria. nearly every Maria wears blue. Kings traditionally used red and purple as royal colors. and thats why upper class people tended to dress their girls in blue and boys in red/pink.
like most "traditions" you are just referring to what your parents and sometimes your grandparents did. before that the world was differenty everything is constantly changing.
A cake is a cake,of cake of cake…
WWWiiilllbbbuuurrr!
Colors are gender neutral
Are we judging by the size of the balls? Asking for a friend
I think they're both beautiful and I wish I had the time to bake like this. Well done! The party should love it, regardless of gender.
Why not? Reminds me of space!
I would assume the blue cake is the “boy” version of the purple cake
Yes, the blue one looks like a boys cake. Fun factoid: Up until about the 40s or 50s, the color for boys was pink and the color for girls was blue. Not sure what precipitated the switch. Google it.
the switch was completed in the time you have given but it started to change at the end of the 19th century. one reason is for sure that dressing your little boys in sailor uniforms became a thing at that time. and it also should be noted that in previous times while there was this tendency for pink for boys and blue for girls, this gendered split was way less pronounced and dominant than today.
So, in other words, I was right.
yes, i wasnt contradicting you, just confirming and adding to it!
Sorry, not a good day. My apologies.
all good, hope you have a better day tomorrow : )
I think they only thing that is making it look different is the purple cakes big flowers are way bigger than the blue ones big ones. It's keeping some height off of it that the purple one has. But theyre both great and definitely appropriate. Like some one else said, dont over think it!
Wait I’m confused. Isn’t blue typically considered a “male” color? The purple one looks more girly to me. Are the twins a boy and a girl?
I immediately thought stars and planets with the blue! Very cool
Obviously needs more power tools and trucks.
I kid I kid, these are both beautiful and will be perfect. I hate the over emphasis on gendered things for kids. My son picked out pink sandals with ice cream cones and rainbows all over them for summer and he's rocking the look.
is it iust be or do they look like the size of a palm
Yes
Yes!
If I was a boy I'd still prefer the purple one.
Yes it identifies as a boy!
Absolutely. It's hard to make a "masculine" cake. Lol
People sure try though — remember the groom’s cake trend that weddings used to have for some reason?
How dare you assume the gender of this cake😛 but seriously is there a more masculine shade of blue or something?
They look amazing, but if it’s for a boy, I will put a spaceman on it.
They look great, I would put some boyish toy on the bleu one. In my opinion that will make it a little more for a boy, like a Superman sign or something like that
No, it just looks like a cake
