Looking to take my wife out for brunch on her birthday this week and want to try something new in Portland.
What’s your favorite spot?

Wonderful spot with a nice patio
IMO the quality and service aren’t as good ever since they changed ownership a couple years ago.
Agreed
That’s a super good call
Bertie Lou's!
Bertie Lou’s is a fucking institution and deserves far more respect/mention than I ever see it get. So glad Covid didn’t kill them.
Hell yeah, I'll always vote for Bertie Lou's. Best chicken fried steak I've ever had in my life, and their gravy is magnificent. We go at least once a month, and when I start feeling the call, I say I'm "Bertie Losin' It".
Delicious, it’s not fancy and sometimes the service is kooky as hell (which we love) but the food is great.
One of the very best. Love that place.
Pro tip- if there’s a line you can get your order delivered by a server at the bar across the street!!!
Broder, bad habit, Tom’s
Mmmm… Broder
sweedeedee
Shhhhhhh
We like Redwood on Stark or Javi's on Sandy
Wow. Redwood has a very good looking menu. Thank you!
Redwood is quite good! And I hate brunch!
Make sure to get the iced coffee horchata drink. I think about it constantly!! Omg and their house made pickles 🔥
the house made pickled veg is honestly one of the best things you can get at a restaurant in Portland.
Javi’s is SO good!
Came here to say redwood. Glad it’s this high.
Cafe Rowan in SE. we went here for Mothers Day and the food and service were amazing.
I drive by here daily for work and always wonder how the coffee is but is SO hard to convince myself to try something new when Keeper is just up the street 😭
Proud Mary
I just ordered some of their coffee. I’d love to visit the shop
Best coffee in town and their ricotta cakes are my jam.
The sausage roll is legit
Genies on Division is a great place for breakfast/brunch, especially during the week.
And especially if you like bloody marys!
Mmmmm. Their horseradish vodka Bloody Mary is soooooo good.
Is Genie’s still open?
Yep!
Little Griddle- reserve a spot online! Omg now I want to go there so bad 😫
Oh my… that menu looks really good.
Best biscuits I’ve had in my LIFE
I found a little hole in the wall called cricket cafe over in SE
Cricket is so yummy, and the less busy sister of Jam on Hawthorne and much better.
Still good, but menu changed after Jam bought Cricket
I thought this place was average
I highly recommend An An in Kenton. Everything we’ve had there has been amazing and there is never a wait.
Sooo goood!
For brunch??? Hmmmm
On a weekday, Screen Door. There’s a reason it’s popular. I can’t be bothered to wait for brunch on weekends. Some of the best eggs I’ve had and also a ridiculously good waffle or French toast. I’d eat a plate of just their house made whipped cream if it were possible.
An alternative if you like eggs Benedict’s or savory breakfasts instead of sweet ones, City State is really good.
Screen door is one of those restaurants that isn’t overrated imo. I recently had the mini chicken and waffles at the airport and it was fucking fantastic, no change in quality. I agree with not going on a weekend though unless you get there before they open.
Duuude I came here to say this. Every time we’re flying we try to find time for that exact thing. The PDX Airport Screen Door is one of the best ideas anyone has done in a while.
It’s sooooo good! I wish they had the mini version at the regular locations too, the portion size is perfect.
Any idea if it’s inside or outside security? I have to swap rental cars tomorrow and this sounds delightful
It’s after security unfortunately!
Screen Door started doing online reservations during COVID and they haven’t stopped. Super easy to get a reservation, no more waiting for 2 hours to get a seat.
Love screen door. Never been for breakfast food, will definitely be looking at that. Thanks!
You can make reservations online. I highly recommend getting the cinnamon rolls!
Show up when they open or forget it. You can make reservations for the first seating at opening for the Pearl restaurant too.
I’ve never had an issue getting seated quickly during the week. Just forget going on a weekend.
The praline bacon is amazing too. 🤤
I was so happy once they opened one in the airport, now I hit that one every time I go in and out
Mis tacones
Just went there yesterday. It's good stuff that seems to be made fresh from scratch. The torta I had was tosted perfectly. Their guac is great. I went there once before, I think I prefer the tacos over the torta.
Hunnymilk on burnside!!! It’s so good and the vibe is very sweet!!
I love it there. They also accommodate allergies like a champ, and without making me feel weird/bad about it!
Second HunnyMilk. Best breakfast in all Portland for a special occasion. I love the blueberry lemon curd sweet one.
Last time I went they didn’t have the hush puppies! Like off the menu completely, I was so bummed.
That is devastating!!!!!! The hush puppies were so good 😭😭😭
Cameo Steak and Pancake on 82nd and Sandy
Besaws - I love the new space (airy and elegant) and you can make a reservation
Im at Hey Love right now and the cocktails are stellar!
Yeah, the vibe and the food for brunch is so solid. Huge hit with my wife: https://www.heylovepdx.com/brunch
isn’t that a bar? not exactly brunch-oriented at the very least
I guess maybe in the evenings? I’ve only been there for brunch. Had the biscuits and mushroom gravy this morning, my husband had the shrimp and grits.
I’m hungry now
Bar Carlo! Bonus points since there often isn't wait
Seconding! Great “standard” fare but their speciality Mexican-American fusion dishes are a constant delight.
Broder - any location. Everything on the menu is so fucking good.
Places already mentioned: Bertie Lou’s, Hunnymilk
We love the Lost Eggs so much we figured out how to make them. But we still go because the rest is so amazing.
Mind sharing that recipe?
Salt & pepper seasoned cream in a cast iron, crack two eggs, add a TON of spinach, layer of shaved ham, top with parmesan and panko mixed together. Start on the stovetop to bubble that cream, then bake at about 350 for 10 min or so. Eggs will poach in the bottom underneath all those layers (ie. Lost)
Lovely, thank you so much!
Sort of what Leading Tax said, but we like to sauté the spinach in garlic before adding it to the béchamel. And we sometimes use prosciutto instead of ham.
Hazel Room! Their French toast is delicious, and I love their Earl grey iced tea.
Yes, Hazel Room is a great option for a birthday brunch. It's a little fancier and cosier than some of the places other people have suggested.
Fleur de Lis Bakery in Hollywood is also nice.
Fullers.
Pine State Biscuits if you like BnG. NW location has shorter lines than SE.
It used to be Zell’s. Now it’s City State.
Pouring out a scone in their memory.
City State has great biscuits and gravy. The texture of their biscuits are exactly how I like them.
I like that you can get those biscuits and gravy AND an eggs Benedict in the same breakfast plate.
Hmmm, can't say I've had that combo but it sounds great! (And very rich.)
Flattop & Salamander. Fantastic chicken and waffles, and the best loaded hash browns.
Also the biscuits and gravy are absolutely sublime. I get a half biscuit and gravy and a side of loaded hasbrowns. Brooooo. I've been here half a dozen times and the food is consistently awesome and a lot better than the old standbys here that always have lines out the door.
Yes! Their biscuits are so good! Have you tried the peach jam they make from scratch? I know they switch up their jam offerings depending on season, but the peach jam is insanely delicious. We’ve been able to get it twice and I would gladly buy a huge jar of it if I could.
No! What do you order that comes with jam?
My go-to is usually the classic breakfast and that comes with a side of toast or a biscuit, so they’ll always offer jam with that. I think so far I’ve had blueberry, strawberry, and peach jam.
Delete this shit bro
Rue Cler Marketplace is a little fancy and excellent (manager is such a nice guy). Brunch was really good.
Went to Rue Cler awhile back, and they had a crab-benedict that was absolutely amazing!
The Mont (go for Mont de Cristo or Chicken and Waffles), Redwood (Make sure you get hashbrowns or potato pancakes!!), Flattop and Salamander (Loaded Hashbrowns!), The Midpoint
Has anyone been to My Vice?
Phenomenal brunch!
Yes. Incredible.
Yes, went with some friends the other weekend after seeing it recommended in one of these reddit threads and it was very good, I would go back definitely
Portland snark means that people will provide their old spots to keep the crowds down at their actual favorite.
What do you mean?! Cheryls on 12th is my for real favorite local secret spot! (Insert sarcastic tone)
Flat Top Salamander. No waits, great food and friendly service. It’s solid.
Delete this before we have to wait
You've intrigued me.
The Daily Feast
Sckavones!
Midpoint cafe for normal brunch or Salty’s for a special occasion
Love Midpoint!
Came here to say this
Edit: Midpoint, that is. Never had brunch at Salty's but I love the view!
Midpoint was my absolute go-to brunch spot! It’s so good! They have a cauliflower scramble that is amazing and I love how they have a large amount of vegan/vegetarian options. During the pandemic, I always supported them because they had to-go breakfast burritos (which were so good) and cheap mason jar mimosas. They also make and sell their own hot sauce!!
If anyone wants to try a great vegan spot and you’re not allergic to the West Side , try Vertical Diner
Pho Oregon, Tēo Bun Bo Hue
Bar Carlo.
Grits and Gravy downtown!
Go get a tea set from Emperor Georgiou’s Tea Room! Super interesting teas, tons of wonderful snacks that actually leave you pretty stuffed if you go for the larger set, and it makes for a quirky/unique outing that I’m sure your wife will love. I took mine for her birthday and love to take visiting family when they’re in town. It’s so easy to spend like 2+ hours in there chatting, sipping, and snacking.
Cafe Nell
Screen door
Kingsland Kitchen
The Sparrow bakery- this is not brunch place but they have amazing sandwiches, pastries, croissants etc. It is so goood
off the griddle or tin shed
I hadn’t been to Tin Shed in ages and we just got takeout this weekend. All five of us— me, husband, three kids— just kept making noises of approval while we ate.
You mentioned "this week" - are you looking for a place that's open on weekdays?
Good call! Yes I am. Thursday
If it's a weekday, I would go to Screen Door. If you're over Screen Door, Broder Nord or Hunnymilk.
Border on a weekday or get there before it opens. Otherwise fullers coffee shop.
Broder. Always.
La Provence in Lake Oswego
I have one near my place in Vancouver and it is so damn good. The wait, however, makes me irrationally angry
I know, right? They're always crowded. Best croissants you'll ever eat, though. And that freezer jam! They have this French toast with lemon curd filling, raspberry sauce, and dusted with minted sugar. A delicate flavor explosion.
You may not see this because you have so many comments already, but I had to throw Jam on Hawthorne out there because I didn't see it mentioned. It's the best brunch I think I've ever had! Options for everyone, great service, and fantastic food and drinks.
The Slide Inn. On Ankeny. Definitely still feels like a hidden gem and the owner has always been a gem as well!
Whenever I go I feel like I can stay and chat with my table as long as I like, plus they have great options for folks who have food allergies/concerns. Homey as heck! <3
I work directly across the street from there for like seven years and I’ve never gone. Maybe I’ll make it a point to hit it up this coming week.
Eastburn is pretty nice!
There’s lots of good ones, but for something decadent and special on a birthday I’d recommend Hunnymilk
Omg yes! I first went there when it was a popup and every time I’ve been since it’s been incredible. Also, another vote for Little Griddle.
Thank you I’ll check it out!
Screen Door
Tin Shed all the way!
Sorry, but this spot makes their biscuits and all from a mix. Never sure how they are so popular. I prefer scratch made if I am going to spend the money.
Cheryl’s on 12th, THE BEST !
Cafe Rowan
MFP
Just went to Yalla in Multnomah Village and it blew us away. Reservations are required for brunch
Bad habit room and cafe Rowan hands down
Jubitz. Go to the bar.
Cadillac Cafe
Flat top and Salamander, and Mother’s
RIP Beeswing
Paiku in St Johns
Nanna's place
Gnarly’s
Jojo’s and Sweedeedee (especially if you shop for records at Mississippi Records next door, right afterwards).
If you wanted to wait till the weekend, they have really fun brunch cruises on Sundays!
Portland Spirit does a 2 hour one down the Willamette. All you can eat brunch and bottomless Mimoas
They also have one that goes down the Columbia river.
The country fried steak at Gravy is 🔥 I don’t care if I have to look like a moron standing around hungover for a half hour.
So happy my favorite place isn’t listed ;)
Marsala Lab PDX
Screen Door, Mother's
Jam on Hawthorne
Costco
Costco slaps.
Cheryl’s on 12th
I love their Portuguese fried rice!
Mothers
Jam on Hawthorne and Tin Shed are two of my favs!
Screen door is really good if you want fried chicken, obviously heavy. Jam is awesome for what amounts to high quality diner food and you don’t have to wait if you go when they open. My wife loves little griddle, great food.
So far, for this recent transplant, I really enjoyed Jam on Hawthorne, Cafe Rowan, and New Cascadia!
Dating myself a bit but Tin Shed is still a favorite. Now with reservations. Spent many hours of my 20s in line lol
Plus one spot I'm gate keeping. It's delicious and not too busy yet.
There nothing that small business owners love more than having their place of business gate kept 😉
They're doing just fine. I'm just trying to keep the wait at less than 30 minutes.
You telling a few of us won't make the wait times longer, I'm sure of it.
You vastly overestimate your power of influence.
Why even post this? Clearly a fan of the drama 🙄
P’s and Q’s over in Woodlawn
