And those 5% are probably the pick me employees.
How many managers by percentage are there in the typical office?
Ironically our contracts at my work mandate no more than 5% of people can be managers on any given project haha.
So aside from all the jokes here, is this 5% just managers? Seems reasonable
Honestly from the way my management operates I wouldn’t be surprised.
A lot of managers seem to intrinsically see their ‘performance’ for companies just in terms of numbers - how much their team produces, the quality level achieved, hours billed to clients, etc.
When you introduce variables (aka other people) into the equation, most of them default to wanting greater control - aka I can visibly check and see you working in an office whenever I feel like it. They don’t develop people or trust the way real leaders do.
(As a corollary - this is also why I’ve found that most new managers will see ‘this is what the numbers were when I took over’ and view their goals (to make themselves look better to the C-suite) as how to delta those numbers - like ‘oh client expects ten a day, your team is hitting ten a day, well I actually need you to do twelve so I’ll be instituting XYZ)
Nah. Many more engineers come in than managers at my job. I think people like lazy stereotypes and don’t realize that people are people. Some of the new engineers right out of college basically live at the office and some you can’t bribe to come in. The management team is pretty much all hybrid, and mostly because they’re told they have to be onsite for some manager meetings.
At least 25% in all the companies I’ve worked at . By manager I mean reports into someone else but also has peope reporting into them
Some people, particularly younger people, don't have the space at home to WFH. Especially if they live with their parents, house share, or even room share.
I have had new hires tell me they’d prefer to come in for those exact reasons. I’ve had others come to me after being remote for a while to ask if they could go on site because of their roommates/parents/kids.
I have room mates still rather wfh I actually get interrupted less at home. I could understand it with kids but, it feels like there's a really good chance kids only interrupt about on par with as much as I get interrupted in the office
I don’t think I’m a pick me employee, I think I’m pretty lazy and just know that I wouldn’t be able to get anything near what I need to get done at home. I also only have a bedroom to my self and would rather not bring my work into my little room.
I'm the opposite, I'm vastly more productive at home
Yea I’m always impressed by people like you. The few days I have worked at home I just got too distracted or my hatred for my job got the better of me and I fucked around and procrastinated more. I’m one of those idiots that need the external pressure on me to keep me doing tasks I don’t inherently want to do.
Ok but at home you can work with a cat in your lap and use your lunch break to take a nap while you secretly cook and eat your lunch on the clock
Unfortunately, I don't have enough space to have an office, but I have a set up in my bedroom and wander around the house/go outside. I'm WAY more productive at home, but I actually like my job, so I don't really need any help getting motivated.
In my case my ADHD will not allow me to get any work done at home and I literally can walk to my job.
I go crazy sitting at a computer all day. I wouldn’t mind doing my job from home, but I don’t think my company will pay for me to build my own engineering lab space at my house.
For me there's my ADD, commuting takes me 25 minutes as I work 6 to 6 so it's outside of both rush hours and I have a computer setup with a huge adjustable desk and 6 4K monitors plus 6 additional overhead monitors.
Can't really have all of this at home.
People who live in living spaces that don’t allow for a good home office setup. People who don’t like being in their home all day. People who are more productive when working with other people in an office.
Etc.
Not at all. I like going into the office because COVID had a different effect. When we all were home, I had to leave my house to get peace.
The office maybe the time that you can talk to other adults and actually have interactions with like minded people. I know for parents to elementary school kids, working at home and having them home may not be the best thing for concentration.
Just my two cents on it. I may get down voted but, it my reality.
I spent 5 years wfh, starting before covid. Just took a 5x a week in office gig, but with wfh flexibility as needed, and I love it. I missed daily outside my home interactions with people and it's better for my health to have my home office back as a fun space.
It's also close to my home so the commute is nothing. I know I'm a rarity but the right situation in office is a real thing for some people.
The biggest pain for me wasn't being in the office, it was the commute. Working from home easily gives me 1.5 extra hours in the day for things more fun than staring at the windshield.
Give me an office a few minutes from the house and I'd be pretty happy. Or even one within half an hour's cycle ride so I could get my exercise in.
Mine has a couple highways but if i could ride to it that'd be incredible
Many years ago (and in another country) I spent 10 years working at a company in a town centre, being 8 miles from my house. 5 of those 8 miles were on a converted railway to cycle track. No cars, no traffic lights. Nothing to slow you down other than the occasional pedestrian. 16 miles riding a day so no need for a gym membership. 😁
I must have ridden that route 2000 times or more during my time there. I miss not being able to do that these days.
This!! My company was 5 x a week and went hybrid after the world opened up.
I live 15 minutes from the office. Just the nature of my work, I rather have my house to be the place of sanctuary. I will work from home, if I need, but it is rare.
I never thought I'd go back to an office but I've been more present for my family when off work because work stops at the office door. I like it but for others YMMV.
Nah, they are mostly boomer age and should have been retired years ago.
