what happens when you go to the hospital for withdrawals?
See 👆FYI during Covid when so many stores were closed, the government decided to keep liquor stores open because cutting off alcoholics would have caused even more hospitalizations and deaths. Not kidding.
Yes, this is true.
How long do withdrawal last
I mean, 2-4 days, but how long they last doesn't really matter.
You can go from sweating and feeling shitty to having a seizure with no way of knowing.
YOU WILL NOT FEEL A SEIZURE COMING ON!
HAVING A SEIZURE CAN AND WILL KILL YOU!
PLEASE GO TO THE HOSPITAL!
Like a week for severe withdrawl.
I've been sober for 6 days now and i didn't notice any withdrawal solution. How's that possible
Please go to the hospital. A friend of my son's just died from withdrawing on his own. Do not 2nd guess this, just go and get help. No one will judge you hon.
I went and all they did was try and help me! Nothing bad will happen, and nobody will judge you. They gave me a few pills which I completely forgot the name of now, but it helped a lot with the shaking and pounding heart. And then I got and IV for more fluids as I was very dehydrated. You’ll feel much better when you leave guaranteed
I was in ER 8hours with iv drips ...Sitting there for 8 hours I determined that I was an alcoholic. That was on 1/22/08. I never drank again . Go get detoxed my friend and don't screw your life up like I did
They'll give you a scrip for a safe withdrawal. You won't have enough to get addicted.
I went to the ER heavily intoxicated. Apparently, while under the influence, I was banging my head yelling, "I want to die", so I was "1013'd" and sent to a psych hospital. There, I went through detox.
What the ER would have done had I not shown SI behavior, I do not know. But, I DO know that they checked my BAC level and it was .3; and a nurse told me that would potentially be lethal in someone without an incredible tolerance. So, they had to know I'm an alcoholic. Which means, I am sure they would have done something to detox me.
And I have no idea what that would have been.
Jesus man we had different experiences. lol I went to the ER and after blood came back my BAC was .522 and I was rushed to the ICU hardly remember any of it but apparently I was really funny and cracking jokes like crazy. My brother is a nurse at that hospital and his husband is a helicopter medic so I got some real feedback also it was kind of embarrassing constantly being told Ik your family I love them so much kind of deal. So I probably got extra good treatment tbh.
I did, was kept in over night, they were lovely and looked after me plus they were supportive of me doing it and said I was in the right place so they could help me detox safely. Benzos helped chill me right out, I was also on them for a few days at home. Now over 5 years sober. Don't hesitate to go to the hospital is my advice they are there to help if required
The hospitals. Nurses. Doctors. Staff. All of them are trained in this and are fucking amazing. I had an awesome experience of getting help and safely getting clean. But I used that motivation to get sober. And here I am 3+ years later. Get into a program.
You don't have to go to the emergency room if you plan ahead. If you have insurance, call them and call detox centers on their list of places they cover. If you don't have insurance and are in the USA you can call 211 to get a referral. I called my insurance and got set up in a decent place. Had an appointment for intake and it was smooth.  If you are in active withdrawal, go straight to the emergency room.Â
They won't give you enough to get addicted. They'll give you enough to safely withdraw.
You absolutely do deserve to be there. You're literally in a potentially life-threatening situation. And you're trying to do the right thing by quitting.
Good advice to go in. Alcohol withdrawals can kill you. Don't be afraid to get help, that's why they are there!
If you haven’t made it to a hospital yet, I’d recommend a detox center if that’s an option. Definitely get there as soon as possible. Detox will allow you a softer place to land and the last think you want is to end up at a mental health facility if the hospital finds they don’t know what to do with you.
I’ve medically detoxed about 10 times.
You’ll go, they will put you on benzos until you’re stabilized (a few days).
You’ll sleep a lot. And probably get an IV for fluids.
They will be happier that you’re there than crashing in post seizure. Especially if you’re walking in sober. Even if you’re not, it’s easier to manage you pre seizure.
You might also get a script for some other meds, like campral or naltrexone to help you with cravings post withdrawal. I find that the one I’m on, campral, was essential as part of my program. I legit did not have any sleeping issues and credit it to this med.
Following. Never been through this but I've had people ask me the question directly and I don't know.
In the UK if they deem it serious enough to admit you after tests in A&E, you’ll get a bed on a ward and given medicine to make you feel at ease while the withdrawal happens. You’ll be monitored and fed. You won’t be committed, no, you’re free to leave if you want. It can last 2-3 days but I was always kept in about 5-7 days. You should also get help or pointed in the direction to get help in staying sober. It’ll go on your medical record, of course, but there’s no shame in that, and withdrawal is very dangerous without medical help so it’s worth it. Good luck.
They will detox you safely, and make sure you have fluids/electrolytes probably by IV if you're being sick.
They will treat you and encourage you to go to a in patient treatment facility. Go. If you express suicidal ideations, they may commit you.
Hey man withdrawals do kill but a detox center is much cheaper if you don’t have insurance. If you’ve been sober for days already a detox center is sufficient. Entered the hospital with fatal bac and was in ICU for 3 days but 2 times in detox after the fact was sufficient.
I’m at 95 days since my last relapse and I’ve been having pretty bad cravings. This post was the reminder I need of just how bad detox sucks. OP I’m glad you decided to go get care.
I needed to hear this as well!

They will give you benzos, tapering off for a few days as they act on the same part of the brain and reduce seizure risk. But they will give you only 10 or so pills and obviously take them as directed and don’t drink on top of them.
Go to hospital. It saved my life last year. Very professional and compassionate.
I hope you are better. Hit a meeting when you can
Not a helpful comment captaind0nkey for someone reaching out.
Anyway u/ok, please go to the hospital immediately. Coming off booze can kill you.
I only wish u had gone to the hospital all the times I had withdraws. I did on my own thinking I would get in trouble. I should have gone.
Over night if bad like me.. give you meds to make sure your body comes down correctly. Whole lotta Netflix
Had to hospitalize myself at age 25 due to withdrawals and DT's being too severe... was kept for 3 days, and that started my path to sobriety....could be the best decision you'll ever make!
I went to the ER. They sent me to a lockdown psych unit to detox. This was a good thing as I was suicidal. Two weeks later I was discharged sober, on meds for depression, and hooked up with outpatient therapy. 18 months sober.now and life is awesome. I had drank for 25 yrs, the last 10 heavily. Don't hesitate. i believe if I hadn't sought help in the ER, I'd be dead.
They give you a banana bag and a couple of Ativan, eventually they'll start turning you away though because they have more important things to worry about and it's not fair to waste that time on an alcoholic
Bro, go to the hospital. Don't overthink it.
Withdrawal kills people.
