Pemi SAR 5/19

Hi all, The PEMI SAR team was heading up lonesome lake trail at about 3:00 p.m. yesterday. Where can I find information on the incident? I know they sometimes post a Facebook or Instagram but I'm assuming there's another source.

Thanks!

Lowe's Path, King Ravine Trail, or Spur Trail to Adams summit?

I'm looking to hike Mount Adams next week and wanted to get your guys' thoughts on what trail/s to take up/down. I'm in my early 20s and consider myself a decent hiker but I want to avoid anything super sketchy since I'll be solo and don't have a ton of bouldering experience. Starting at Lowe's seems like the best option which is why I asked about those 3 trails but I'm open to completely different routes as well. Don't want anything much longer than 10 miles though so I can be sure I can do it in a day.

Also, what are the conditions on those trails like the end of May? Should I use microspikes, hiking boots, or just trail shoes?

Hiking Franconia Notch to Mount Washington

Hey all, I plan on doing this in the next couple weeks. I think it will be a 5 day trip and about a 50 mile stretch. Any advice on what I should expect, or if I need extra gear like mini spikes.

I heard it can be a tough area to hike, and some people don't really start until the start of July.

Moat range 5/17

Last friday I hiked the moat range. I started from diana's baths, went up the moat mountain trail to the north peak, out and back to the south peak, and down red ridge. The trails were in great shape. They were mostly dry with a few muddy area. No snow or ice. There were only a few other people out. The red ridge trail were really nice with alot of open ledges. It was a great day.

Question about “the subway” on King’s Ravine

Looking to finish up planning the T25 list. One of the mandatory trails says the Subway and it looks like it’s suggesting it is part of King’s Ravine. Can anyone help me out with this? Not sure what’s it’s referring to. Thank you!

Anyone do it parts of it recently? Was curious about the snow/ice situation up top. Seen it’s rain the last few days and the temps don’t get to freezing according to MWO

People with low clearance vehicles - looking for some opinions

I'm debating selling my Outback to get an Accord and I'm just wondering if anyone with a similar vehicle has any thoughts on the matter. How many times did you want more ground clearance or wish you had AWD? I can't recall too many times where I felt that it was needed but maybe I just wasn't paying attention. Thanks!

Campsite availability?

I'm driving up to New Hampshire next week with a friend to climb Mt Adams. We're looking for a campsite from Friday to Sunday. I've been looking at campgrounds all around the area and nothing with reservations is available. What are the chances of finding an available first come first serve campsite if we get there on Friday? Any recommendations on what campground we'd have the most luck with? Thank you!

Difficulty comparison of easier vs harder NH48

So I think I got hooked on completing these and want to make sure I don't bite off more than I can chew.

So far I've done a handful of the easier peaks (i.e. Moose, Pierce) in the winter with experienced hikers. Last week I did Lafayette and Lincoln which was my first big solo hike ever. I've also done a couple bigger hikes with buddies out west (15+ milers, significant elevation gain).

Physically, the ups usually don't give me too much difficulty and I think I can go faster than most. The downs I am definitely slower than most (the pros and cons of long legs)--- the main thing is just that the bottom of my feet get very sore around the 8-10 mile mark.

All that said- I'm expecting that many of my remaining hikes will be solo. I have no intention of currently trying anything alone in the winter, but given my experience level, should I be ok to do most/all of the peaks in the summer? Or is there a huge jump in difficulty compared to what I've already done? I have started looking into doing an overnight with a hut stay to break up some of the longer trips. Otherwise, I would probably try to keep to ~10 or less mile day hikes. Owls Head has piqued my curiosity though-- seems like it's mainly flat apart from a short bit at the end so I can get away with comfortable shoes... As long as there's not sustained downhills, Im thinking I'll be ok there..

Any advice or tips appreciated!

Questions about pemi

I was hoping to find out if there were bathrooms at each campsite and which way is recommended to go. I’ve heard good things about counter clockwise and clockwise, so I’m a little conflicted. Thanks

Recommendations for good mountains south of the Whites?

I drive up from RI pretty frequently to hike in the White Mountains, and have a few trips planned for this Spring/Summer, but I have a day freed up in my schedule this weekend and am in the mood for a hike. I just don't want to drive too far north. Wondering if anyone knows of any mountains south of the Whites that wouldn't be such a long drive for me to get to? I've checked some out on Google but can't really get a feel for which are worth it or not. Monadnock is the obvious answer, but I hike it pretty frequently, so I'm looking for something else.

Campgrounds open?

Dyes anybody know whether WMNF Campgrounds (in general, but specifically Passaconaway) are open yet? The site says opening “Mid-May.”

Twins and Galehead 5/17

Considering trying to do these peaks tomorrow, but don’t see a lot of recent trail reports on newenglandtrailconditions or AllTrails.

Anyone have any recommendations on best routes or if there’s issues on water crossings?

Thanks in advance!

Liberty, Flume 5/11

Last saturday I hiked Liberty and Flume via the Osseo trail. I didn't run into any snow until above the ladder section and then there was a stable monorail between summits. It was a nice overcast day with no wind. I ran into a group of kids on flume throwing cigarettes on the ground that I think were the ones that got rescued from the flume slide. I gridded out may on Liberty.
