Thanks LF for giving us Peak Filipino Representation!!
SpoilerAcolyteManny Jacinto's charisma is just off the charts, and between Jason and Qimir he's clearly got range. I love him.
It’s funny, when I watched the first Acolyte episode he was in, I thought, “this guy looks familiar. Who is he? I can’t figure it out, but he has a tiny little bit of a Jason Mendoza vibe.”
I had the exact same thought process. "That guy looks super familiar. He kinda looks like Jason Mendoza...but there's.no way it's the same actor.
I'm pretty sure "who can play the most loveable idiot" had to be part of his casting process
It’s Darth Bortles
I’m stuck trying to understand how you make a lightsaber that works like a Molotov cocktail.
The mix reminds me of Atton Rand.
Yeah, as a huge Good Place fan I was really surprised at how well he plays a villain. He has quickly become one of my favorite villainous portrayals in all of Star Wars. The delivery on "You brought her here." was perfectly cold.
I love “Was that its name?”.
I was so impressed with his acting cause I only saw him in Good Place and didn't even fully recognize him at first. I both hate and love his reveal as the villain. I hated it because they killed off characters I was getting to like (was really rooting for Jecki in particular) and that gutted me, but I couldn't deny the effect of that reveal being so damn good. And like you said, that line 🤌 I just started binging it the other day and didn't think about it still being released weekly and was like "where's the rest!?" 😅
Was he always that jacked? I will admit it’s been a while since I watch TGP but I don’t remember him being that buff
He probably was but his wardrobe didn't show it off. His arms looked jacked in his robe in early episodes.
He was definitely pretty jacked in TGP. You kind of have to be to dance the way he did. But you can see it in certain scenes, like when he tears off his tux sleeves during his wedding to Janet.
Yup.
His range really is astounding. I’ve absolutely loved him in Acolyte, he’s got that perfect blend of charisma and malice.
He does have range but Jason does keep popping into my head and "Darth Bortles" has been sending me
Also i love how OP had to spoil the reveal for me right in the picture.
It’s been five days.
I know the spoiler function exists, but I don’t venture onto this sub until after I’m caught up. I don’t trust putting all the onus on others to perfectly hide every potential tell for spoilers. 🤷♂️
Eh, I agree with them.
Adding a spoiler tag isn’t a difficult thing. It’s a minor courtesy that could preserve some enjoyment for countless people.
Particularly here in the cantina, I’d expect folks to be more considerate.
I know you meant the actress/actor, but for a second I was like “wait did the Night Sisters come from the Philippines”
Now I'm imagining a Jollibee wedged in the middle of some dark temple on Dathomir
Cashier: "Welcome mam/sir to Jollibee Dathomir! Can I take your order?"
Nightsister: "Isang Chickenjoy with spaghetti and large Coke"
This is the reason why Taron Malicos never left Dathomir after the Clone Wars
He drove himself insane after eating spicy Chickenjoy until they ran out of stock
Good thing there wasn't a Red Ribbon on Dathomir. Cal would have found him comatose under a layer of empty ensaimada wrappers.
Hahahahaha
I mean, being a Filipino, there are some places here where they're not very far off from the Night Sisters.
The Stranger unmasking
"I hope this doesn't awaken anything in me..."
There has been an awakening. Have you felt it?
Floating ominously down from the sky was enough for me, the rest of it was just a bonus
I couldn't stop staring at his arms every time they were visible
suddenly The Stranger unveils his clone
You: “Yes! Dream coming true!”
Before someone complains that they’re villains… Star Wars fans love their baddies, probably more than any other fandom.
Also, while he’s not Filipino, Sol is also played by an Asian, so they have an Asian villain and an Asian hero.
i will say i absolutely have a favorite villain, but have no favorite hero. to them the heroes are cool and all, but a villain that is done well, is the best
Who's your favorite villain? Made me curious.
darth bortles. but before it was maul
Well shit he's THAT good? He just had you give The Old Master the boot? I gotta watch it now I suppose lol
he plays the character the perfect level of crazy. like ledger with the joker
darth bortles has quickly become my favorite star wars villain. he plays the perfect amount of psychopath and they better not kill him off on the end. he NEEDS his own series with full backstory and full future story.
since its 100 years before bby, he can live a full human life and not mess up lore. i also think he is the "first" knights of ren in this show, even though in the SWTOR there is knights of ren, and that is 1000 years before this show.
He killed Jecki, he needs to pay.
darth bortles
Well I know what I'm calling him now.
I’m between that and Smylo Ren
Shame on y'all, Smylo Ren is goated.
Knights of Ren in SWTOR??? What?
Be prepared to have him Darth Maul/Boba Fett'd lol shit! Even Palpatine'd xD death doesn't mean shit to a fan favorite
Absolutely.
I'm half English and half Filipino, and growing up mixed race is definitely confusing. I always thought I could relate to Anakin, Luke, Leia, etc. - and I absolutely can and do - because of their core character beliefs and values coming across so strongly, but man, it means so much more to me than I ever thought it would to see Asian representation (and Filipino in particular) in so many more things these days, but especially Star Wars.
And, on a personal level, maybe even more so to me considering that they're both also mixed.
I get that! I’m half Thai and I’m just very hyped to see more Asian representation in Star Wars. In such awesome roles, too.
I love seeing lots of representation in SW (and other things), so it just reminds me of how backwards some people are in their thinking when they claim "disney ruined star wars!" And it's just straight white dudes.
I hope they don't do the stupidest thing possible and kill off the stranger, because we need 1000% more Manny Jacinto. He is KILLING it.
I am in love with Qimir omg
Both with equally badass choreographed fights in their shows! I’d have to edge out the Morgan Elsbeth fight just a bit because it felt like an old school kung fu movie fight and, from a lore perspective, I like seeing more of the enchanted bladed weapons against lightsabers.
My first thought with Qimir was, daaaamn! Darth Batak.
Everyone here thinks he's Taiwanese. He's Filipino. That's racist. Khofar is so racist.
Eugene Cordero was in The Mandalorian too. Too bad they're not in the same timeline so we could get a Jason and Pillboi reunion.
Go Jacksonville Jaguars!!!
BORTLES!
Anytime I had a problem, I threw a Molotov cocktail.
Anytime I had a problem, I threw a
Molotov cocktailJedi like a ragdoll.
FTFY
Asian excellence 🔥🔥🔥
Don’t forget James Cooney as The Apostle in Andor
Yee, I’m not even Filipino and I’m still happy!
Qimir is fucking awesome
Yeah! But… what’s LF lol?
Lucasfilm
Lucas Films!
Idunno exactly how I feel about the show so far, but that is my sith lord
They’re always evil tho
Villains are the more fun characters to play
I think the point was more about representation. And in the acolyte he makes his point about being able to practice his cult, which further pushes a point against anticolonial stance. We'll have to see how it's handled afterward.
I don’t see how it’s anti-colonial in relation to Star Wars. If anything it’s anti-theocracy
I think that would be a fair criticism in some of the other series, but less so for this one which features a cast that is almost entirely people of color (which is lovely)
I mean these two are, for sure. There is a flipside to representation where your identity ends up sort of typecast as virtuous victim or plucky rebel archetypes rather than just normal people who can be good, bad or anything between. I remember trans folk were elated to find out that the lad from Evil Dead Rise was the one who reads from the Necronomicon and unleashes the Deadites to murder everyone and they were like "Finally, we get an on-screen trans moron!"
I mean there's two of them. That's the bare minimum to even be plural, so saying they're "always" evil doesn't actually mean all that much
LF knows how to celebrate cultural diversity in the Star Wars universe!" "Peak Filipino representation in Star Wars – it's about time!"
Is this Acolyte content? Looks good
Amen
Yaaaaasssss I love it! Although, can we please get at least one light force user out here reppin’ too?? 🤣
Edit: typo
I’ve loved Manny since the Good Place!
Ok…
Disney should make them both drug dealers for no reason, I think that’ll go over well /s

You can have both good representation and good acting, which they are and I'm sure that's what OP means.
Irrelevant, considering they both did very well in their roles.
said literally no one ever
Short honest question, do the characters display Filipino culture, manarism, language or other stuff or "only" the heritage?
