Some laws stop people from infringing on our personal freedoms.
Explain that, you are having a very negative outlook
Look on the bright side: in a 100 years none of us will be here.
Look on the bright side, we're all going to die and nothing matters, cheer up you silly goose lol
you really think 100 years worth of medical advancements won't increase our life expectancy to a higher amount than that? cmon. this is the year 2100 we're talking about.
Not really. Take SB 1526 in Illinois as an example.
SB 1526: The Department of Transportation must develop a mobile app that provides motorists with updated travel conditions.
Most laws are things like this. You only hear about the oppressive ones.
Except that it’s IL; so most of us will be dead before we see it 😅 or they’re gonna work on it for a month then just leave all the cones up for the next year, then go to work on it again
I mean, that's fair. But it was just an example pulled of something that isn't taking away freedoms.
Will we see it? Will it actually work? Will people care?
No lol.
So the tax payers of Illinois are being forced to fund their dot to make an app to do something that Google already does?
Welcome to IL; luckily I’m moving in a few months.
Google is ok on busy roads where there is a chance someone of intelligence can report it. Around here you won’t see a road closed until after it’s open again.
Last summer a road was closed for repaving for 3 months. And the last 2 wild it showed up on Google.
Ah yes. Dystopian sci-fi are just sci now
That’s not how laws work lol. Read the amendments to the constitution, a majority of them are guaranteeing new freedoms. Sure, there are laws passed to tighten regulations or add new restrictions, but many are just clarifications or reactionary laws to new circumstances and technologies.
Losing "the right to smoke onboard planes/trains/pubs/work places" is one such 'freedom' i happily wave tf off🤣
But where does it end? Today it's "you can't fill strangers' lungs with carcinogens", tomorrow it's "you can't discard your used needles near a playground".
Oppression, am I right?
I just want to drive my Cadillac while chain smoking unfiltered Marlboros with my AK-47 in the back window and my infant son crawling around on the backseat without having to worry about getting a ticket for not wearing my seat belt. Like in the good old days. Is that so much to ask?
nothing hits better than a 30000’ dart though
But they are losing their ‘rights’ to discriminate and harass people.
The red states and womens reproductive rights would like to have a word with you.
Also, book banning? Really?
I'm in Florida, book banning is a thing here. Thanks Ron DeSantis.

Demand that all your friends vote. It matters.
They just passed the law that forces me to wear a ball-gag everyday at work 😞 I hate it here
Do you work in porn? Lol
No theres been enough laws put in place and my freedom has been tooken 😞
By ball gag do you mean a mask, 😷? Like what doctors wear? Hope not cause that would be very cringe, very drama queen thing to say lol
This year, New York state passed a law broadening the definition of rape to include more than just PIV. I gladly welcome this further restriction of what is legal.
Examples? I pushed someone to give me examples of the "We are not free" trope, and he finally said that we arent free because we cant drive as fast as we want.
We know we're not "free" to rape and kill, but for us non psychopaths, can you name some recent laws passed that restrict my freedom?
Are you a woman? Body autonomy is a rather significant topic
No
I'm assuming you're a straight white cis-heteronormative man?
Some states/provinces/countries are passing laws to guarantee the right to same-sex marriage.
Isn't that an expansion of freedom?
Others want to ban it. It is part of the GOP 2025 plan.
I dont know all of those words, but I am straight white male.
I’m a straight meanwhile male
And you were born a male?
Yes
So you have a lot of liberties some other people don't have man, some aren't safe going to some states, some people are killed for something they really can't help, just saying you have a lot of freedom some other people don't, dude.
literally every "group" has liberties/freedoms that others don't
Every group has some freedoms that another group doesn't.
I'm just saying the original commenter has a lot of l privileges some other barely have, which might distort his perception of other people's liberties and freedoms
So you have a lot of liberties some other people don't have man
This has nothing to do with original statement of our freedoms being taken away. You are conflating normative privilege with legal freedoms.
I'm saying some people are losing their rights and some are gaining
Who is gaining rights?
Honestly I don't know, do you know? Only thing I know is people are losing rights, therefore people are losing freedom
Why are people downvoting this lol ^
Because it's a useless line of questioning. It's not even for anything substantial, it's so you can have a "gotcha" moment at the end of it all, basically scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of trying to make an intellectual statement.
“We” wont even exit in 100 years so wym we
Especially if project 2025 is able to start.
Bear fighting in Missouri is a class A misdemeanor. $2k fine or 1 year in jail. This law stops no one but was good legislation practice for defining and classifying a crime. Any bear fighting rings would likely be able to afford bail, normal people don't engage in the activity so it doesn't affect them, and it doesn't restrict bears as service animals or exotic pets. However you will need to look up the laws pertaining to those situations.
Help. I'm being oppressed.
Thank God we won't be here in a 100 years.
"Society thrives when old men plant trees knowing they will never sit in their shade"
- Greek proverb
Good one
Well, you are here now. Who would guarantee you won't be again in a 100 years?
depends. If one is a child or teen, possibly
No…
Yup. And if you notice with this joke of a two-party system they seem to be able to pass all of the laws that restrict our freedom a little more each day.
Of course. That way it’s not as noticeable
Not if there's enough football and McDonald's..... And now I'm sad again.... Lolz
You seem to be talking about a specific country but OP doesn’t mention any.
I have never in my adult life I have been told “you can’t do that, that’s against the law”.
Most people go about their day oblivious to laws. But then one day, you get pulled over by a cop, or a cop comes knocking at your door for whatever reason, and then allegations get thrown at you. Then you need a lawyer to pick through the law (statues and precedents) to help you navigate the criminal justice system. Yay.
No it doesn’t happen like that.
Correct. It is so easy to fall foul off the law, without your knowledge.
Odd how most of us can live a half century or more and never run afoul of this shit.
It's called using common sense and not being an asshole criminal.
They have created a new layer of power. Mauors all over Britain, fleecing local populations for net zero while the MPs just sit back and watch.
Exactly, they've been given authority to pass laws and are using the system to their own ends
I don't think so. Most laws have a good reason to exist. I did say most.
There's a logical fallacy in your original premise. We are losing our freedom because new laws are passed on the regular. Post hoc, ergo procter hoc.
Laws are the only thing that works in order to maintain a society of any kind. Rule by bayonet is a doomed system. The rule of law is the only thing that works. And I mean law for all, not a few.
Can it be too much? Yes.
Do they go too far sometimes? Yes.
Does that happen often? Yes.
Is that the main reason new laws are passed every day?
Also, yes. The horrid quality of the law in question, like the Dred Scott decision for a basic example, is more likely the culprit.
“Freedom” doesn’t mean one is totally free to do whatever the hell they want and screw everyone else. With Freedom comes responsibility- and some people don’t like that.

That's kinda how a civilized society works
Legitimately one of the stupidest thing I’ve ever read
- a lawyer
Well you have a vested interest in more and more complex laws because now there are so many that the average person is deprived of justice because they can't afford it
Respectfully, you have absolutely no clue what you’re talking about
Yup, and people are to distracted with drama and memes to do anything about it. Pathetic.
We were never free
Left: Let adults marry who they want and how they want
Right: NO!!!
Left: We already pool money for healthcare, let's get rid of the unnecessary middleman. It'll be more accessible and cheaper
Right: NO!!!
Left: Encourages reading books
Right: Literally banning books
The Left is trying to expand our freedoms, while the Right is actively stripping them
I wish it was as simple as that. For many people the economic interventionism of left leaning politics takes away the freedom to have a free capitalist market, just to give an example.
Lol. Capitalism is so broken we've implemented laws to fix it.
For many people the economic interventionism of left leaning politics takes away the freedom to have a free capitalist market.
Which left leaning policies make a capitalist country impossible?
You are asking me as if I said that was my opinion.
I’m just saying that several right leaning people I’ve met tend to think like that, as an example that we can’t just make black and white statements when talking politics, because it doesn’t work like that.
Sure, cuz we know the law that banned slavery caused a lot of people to lose their freedom…
This is just nonsense. Most laws make us more free - eg, you give up the right to murder someone but gain freedom from being murdered.
Americans really need to learn the concepts of "freedom to" and "freedom from."
I agree that the statement is nonsense, but it's cute that you think nobody has ever been murdered while murdering was illegal.
Yeah, I thought someone would say that :) but to the exact extent that the law doesn't protect you from being murdered, it also doesn't impinge on your freedom to murder.
Murder numbers would skyrocket if murdering was legal,
For quite a lot of people, the fact that it is illegal and that it will be punished is a good deterrent. One that might have saved your life without you even knowing
America no longer has the peoples best interest at heart, it only answers to the top political figures, sure, we might play at democracy, what with some binary election where I have to choose one side or the other, it's no longer for the people, it's for the politicians.
By your logic we shouldn't have any freedoms by now. Depending on your country it's been around for hundreds and hundreds of years already. With new laws all of those years. There would be nothing left by now if what you're saying is true
Sometimes it feels like it.
so we're basing all of this on feelings now?
Lawlessness does not equal freedom.
Who said it does?
It's the only logical opposite outcome of your statement. If an increase in laws restricts freedom a decrease and eventual total absence would be absolute freedom.
If you do not agree with that, your argument is flawed.
Well total absence of law is total freedom isn't it.
How much freedom did we have 100, 150, 200 years ago? When women couldn’t vote, most men couldn’t vote, people could have slaves. How about segregation? Apartheid?
We are more free than ever. Contemporary reports from any time will say what you’ve said. In the short term things seem like ‘our freedom is draining away!’, but zoom out, we can all vote, we can all own property, we can travel to most countries, we can work for money, the list goes on.
What I’m saying is, you’re wrong.
You can vote, but is it worth anything?
Yes. What’s your point? That the elections are fraudulent? That the parties who so clearly differ in policies are the same?
It doesn't matter. Your opinions don't influence law.
It does though. That’s the point of democracy.
You can say that the current systems are flawed, but this doesn’t support your “more laws, less freedom” argument.
Democracy is an illusion
Brexit is the immediately obvious answer.
This is why people should A) vote, and B) seriously consider their choices and their long-term effects when doing so.
Would be nice if we had some actual choice in voting. However, it doesn't matter. It's been shown that laws passed don't relate to the priorities of the voters.
Sad, but true. The entire system needs a reboot, IMO.
don't worry, you have a vote in who gets to hold the leash
Like you and I have any choice on what laws are actually passed
No, that's for the lobbyists and the politicians to decide how much it'll cost for what law to pass.
I just get a say in who gets paid off.
Not how laws work. Without, you would be living in an actual apocalypse without clean water, food or a home
Not necessarily. Not saying, no laws. Saying the more laws we have, the less freedom we have. Yes, we have to give up some freedoms to live in a civilized society, but where does it end.
Capitalism baby!
What freedom?
Too many people to equals too many fuctards equals more laws. 100 years ago there was room to be an idiot all by yourself. Now if you act stupid you affect someone else so we need laws to stop it. America is in the top ten for locking up it's citizens. You were never free it's just propaganda.
There are no rights only privileges that can be taken away at any time.
Losing? This isn’t new. John Milton was protesting against Parliament restricting freedoms when he wrote Areopagitia back in 1644. It’s the way life is. And it sucks. But it’s not new. And it’s not going to change either. And perhaps I’m feeling somewhat pessimistic and perhaps it could change one day, but it’s certainly nothing newsworthy
I think after WW3 some people will be pretty free
100 years ago, the same thing could have been said, and often was.
How many of us feel we would have had more of the freedom we want in 1924 than we do today?
Many laws increase freedoms.
Name one
I miss the good old days of real freedom when you could kill anyone at anytime
Now that's being silly
It is a restriction on my freedom. I can't kill and I can't steal. You sound like that is OK but a restriction on you smoking in a casino is a crushing blow to individual liberty
Dude hasn't searched "There is no free will" in reddit.
That has nothing to do with what I was saying
It's true that some new laws can introduce restrictions. But mainly, it depends on what laws you're talking about.
In any case, you/we should be concerned about the future laws that will be introduced to prevent a thing to happen.
New laws typically apply to new things. For example: seatbelt laws may have restricted your freedom somewhat, but we only passed those after we got cars, which were a pretty drastic upgrade to our freedom.
Firstly, let me say, I agree with seatbelts. But there is no doubt it restricts your freedom. With freedom comes the freedom to make bad decisions.
Right but you’re missing my point. We couldn’t have seatbelt laws without cars, and cars are a much larger expansion of our freedom than seatbelt laws are a restriction of our freedom. Despite seatbelt laws, we still gained freedom overall with the invention of cars.
Your post was that laws are slowly reducing the amount of freedom we have, but that’s not true. We keep gaining new freedoms, and laws only slow down our ever expanding range of freedoms.
When the internet wayback machine gets taken down is when I’ll really start to worry.
your hot take collapses at the second sentence. not nearly all laws restrict your freedoms in some way. a lot of them don't even affect your freedom. some laws even expand your freedom. some laws restrict your freedom for the safety of you or your peers (speed limits, alcohol age limit, psychological background checks for weapon licences). the assumption that all laws restrict your freedom is incorrect.
It's still restrictive. It's still a freedom you had that you don't have.
I'll be the 10th dentist and say it: look at what humanity does when it's free. Most of us have no concept of self-restraint, and it destroys everything. Thinking we deserve to make our own decisions and do what we want is like saying dogs don't need to be on leashes. Philosophically speaking, that's correct. Practically speaking, it's not.

I am not advocating no law.
A lot of laws are changed to be less strict.
Many laws are in place to protect people’s freedoms.
Society changes. New technology usually means new laws(eg: the internet)
Meh. This post seems too vague and general. I feel like I have way more options than I did 20 years ago and this feels more free.
Of course, people's experience differs. Can you name one of the options
America does not have our best interests at heart
Just look at the way most people act when something happens … “OMG that should be against the law” .. people will gladly give up freedom for the illusion of safety
If we all have the freedom to fart on the bus, then we’re all gonna be huffing farts the whole ride.
You need to think less in terms of freedoms, and more in terms of mutually beneficial social contracts.
Laws also grant rights.
You do know that laws also get suppressed, right?
An example I know well, up until 2022 iirc it was illegal in Canada for minors to have anal sex. That law got removed because it was restricting the freedom of homosexual minors.
Find something else if you want to play victim.
