Some girls are crazy about zodiac, so she asked him that info to see if he was aries or whatever and if it matched with her sign
Close, but it’s to see his “Star Chart. Which to this day I still have no fucking clue what my rising sun sign means, and what it has to do with my personality.
Found the Sagittarius
Found the leoplurodon.
No, they're a lagamorph
Nah they’re clearly a ligma
Hey there, friendo! I see you used a word I never seen before! I'm just curious, what's a ligma (gee I hope this goes just swell for me)

Ophi-uck you
Opinionidis rex
Ophiucus?
Lucky 13! ...If she's a Taylor Swift fan, she'll LOVE that.
I thought Taylor Swift fans liked 22?
Taylor Swift's favorite number is apparently 13, because she was born on the 13th. (Literally just heard this yesterday, so I can't say anything about 22)
He was correct to an extent but you're right this meme is probably referring to girls that are in deeper than just looking at your Sun sign (the one that most people know as their Zodiac sign) which you can know from just your birthday generally. Quick explanation for those curious, It's commonly accepted amongst people who believe in this stuff that your Sun sign is who you are inside as a whole. Your Moon sign deals with how you process your emotions, Your Rising sign is who you are perceived or come off as to others. There are others but people consider these the "big three" because they "have the most affect on your personality". You need to know your exact time and location you were born because it has to do with where you were at the time of birth in regards to the constellations that these signs refer to. Lots of math involved. There are sites/apps that do it for you.
I don't buy it in the slightest but if you want to criticize it you should probably learn about it first imo.
Yeah Il pass on looking into star math that supposedly predetermined who I am as a person.
Same, no space prejudice for me
Apparently my grandma used to do readings for people (for free). Saw some of her books years ago and I was struck with how math intensive astrology can be. It made me appreciate how we got astronomy out of it.
I’ve only heard about zodiac sign and ascendant (what you described as rising). They say ascendant shows more later in your life where I live, but still is about your character traits.
Yeah there is very little that is universally accepted within Astrology. I think that's kind of how so many people fall for it. They just need to look hard enough for what they want and then all of a sudden it's spot on.
This is why I hated the Orville episode about the aliens who believed in astrology. Because why would these aliens care about when people who weren't even born on their planet were born? I get wanting to poke fun at astrology (because it's very silly) but then you have to at least know what you're poking at.
There's so much shit. Getting into astronomy comes with the gift basket of learning all these astrology things.
There's your rising sign, what constellation the sun was when you were born (fun fact, that's actually not accurate anymore because thanks to the movement of the Earths axis, zodiacs are now one sign behind. Aries are now Pisces, Taurus are now Aries, ect.)
Your moon sign, where the moon was when you were born Also what phase the moon was in also counts, and apparently, the moon currently being in your zodiac means it's the best time to take actions a risks and all that.
The location of planets when you were born, which is a clusterfuck because there's at least five you can see with your eyes, not even counting the other two. Planets being close together, planets being in alignment (which, they're all of the same plane so technically they're all aligned, just with different distances)
Pair all of this with your potential partner's, and the universe will tell you if you two are compatible. Zippity-doo. I mean, it is fun to check this stuff out and giggle at any coincidences, and I've seen quite a few zodiacs that were right, but the whole basing your entire life off of horoscopes and moon placements and immediately judging other people based on them is a huge red flag.
it means if you date a certain person the universe will collapse
I have a twin brother and girls just pretty much used the rising sun sign to justify why all the traits they said were unique to me because of my zodiac were completely wrong for my brother….he was born 2 minutes before me.
It has nothing to do with your personality
So, I've actually been working on and off on an android app for the past year or so that makes star charts. It's not exactly an astrology app. It's intended as a sort of modern day Antikythera mechanism that predicts ceremonial dates and astronomical events in the contexts of various lunar and lunisolar ritual calendars. I really just wanted to learn more about how these calendars worked historically but I'll eventually stick it out there as a calendar app for pagans or something. Anyway, one of the first features to be built out was to generate a complete star chart whenever someone clicks on a calendar day and selects a time on the day view, and in building it I learned a lot about a subject that I will likely never find an excuse to use again once this thing is built.
Your Rising Sign, or Ascendant, is the sign that the east side of the horizon is in when you are born. The earth rotates, but the stars stay where they are. That means that a given constellation isn't going to be in the same place all day. The planets that are passing in front of it will still be in front of it, but the position of both the planet and the constellation with respect to you standing on the earth changes. Let's say you are looking at Taurus. If you watch it all day, it will appear to rise at some time, pass through the sky, and set. Your Rising Sign is just what it sounds like, the constellation that was "rising" at the time you were born. It's one of only a few astrological values that is highly dependent on time of day. There are 12 constellations that make a full rotation in a 24 hour day so a general rule of thumb is that the Ascendant changes every 2 hours. It's also highly dependent on place, since where the stars are with respect to your horizon depends on where you and your horizon are.
Personality wise, it seems to be associated with the way others see you. The way the sources I looked into during my own research seem to put it is that your rising sign is about the face you put on to the world, your moon sign is about who your really are deep down, and your sun sign is kind of both, a general summary of all the overall trends in your personality. Looking at my own chart, looks like I'm a Leo with a Taurus rising and Aries moon. Not sure what any of that actually means since I didn't really look into astrological interpretations much, more just focusing on the mechanical stuff that would allow me to model the software. But if an astrologer were to hear that they would say that I present as Taurusy, but am secretly more Ariesesque when I'm alone, but, overall, I'm generally Leonian. Insert appropriate traits here.
That's actually really cool! I learned something new today. You should give an update when you finish and release that app. Something worth checking out!
Haha thanks. When it's finally up I'll be posting about it on all the pagan adjacent subs. I'm not sure when that will be though because the majority of my time and motivation goes into the code I'm paid to write, and it's only about once a week or so that I really feel motivated to work on side projects. I've kind of been actively avoiding talking about it online in spaces that are actually interested in that sort of thing, since, when I initially started working on it, I made a post over in r/Hellenism asking some questions about some things the historical record is fuzzy on regarding the Attic calendar (which month to repeat on leap years, whether to use a metonic cycle or try to set month lengths and leap years "on the fly" like the Athenians probably did, etc) and how modern practitioners tend to do those things, and a bunch of people got real excited and started sending me DMs asking about release dates. The answer will probably remain "Um...someday?" until it's pretty much ready to go lol.
If they’re asking for location it’s likely even worse as they want to track what celestial objects were in orbit above you at that time n shit. It gets absolutely insane. Source: my abusive ex
Lmao I dated an abusive ex that was hella into that shit too, that’s why I find this meme funny as hell. Sad high five homie
Therapy helps brother. Cheers.
what do you mean close? it is for the Zodiac and there is no such thing as “rising sun” there is a Sun, a Moon and Rising, but no rising sun sign
The only rising sun that should be remembered in history is that of Mao Zedong.
Well there is a house in New Orleans…
They call the Rising Sun.
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God, I know, im one.
based
Does it really matter….? It all means the same thing in the end, absolute bullshit.
I figured they were referring to the "sent with Siri" beneath the message.
That doesn't explain "place" does it?
I was thinking maybe the girl wanted to recreate the deed...
Full star charts differ by location, as the constellations and stars visible in the night sky will. For example, you can't see the southern cross from the northern hemisphere, and you cannot see ursa major from the southern. And various stars like Sirius are only visible for part of the year.
Basically, girl's crazy and getting WAY deeper than the basic zodiac stuff.
Something something quantum entanglement with celestial objects.
This sounds like a really cool magic system rather than an actual irl thing
Literally just had a girl ask me this a few weeks ago.
My first thought was more this seems like social engineering to get into my bank.
But I guess there's a lot of layers to the Zodiac shit that follows not just your birthdate but location, time and shit like that. The girl was giving me all this info about my sign and I'm just like.. this all is really generalizing information that seems like you are shooting birdshot and hoping a pellet connects.
Or he's wondering if it's his lost twin, which by the reply it seems to be. .
Thank God, I thought the punchline was going to be incest again.
The answer is astrology. Meaning that mom is protecting her precious boy from crazy town.
thanks peter
No it's because mom is worried he will be giving out social engineering information used to steal identity and hack into social media platforms.
These are "security question answers"
If he doesn’t even know the answers those would be horrible security questions lmao
That's one of the questions I was asked getting a new social security card.
If that were the case it'd be a kid telling their parent to hang up the phone.
Out of curiosity, how does place of birth tie into this? I thought it was only the date that you were born?
I’m no expert but I assume it has something to do with how the stars in the sky will be seen differently based on where you are geographically.
Not just the stars, planets and their placement in constellations as well as the suns placement are determined using the location and time.
Sun Sign = What Constellation was the sun passing through when you were born (changes about once per month, not dependant on location)
Moon Sign = What Constellation was the moon passing through when you were born (changes about every other day more or less, not dependant on location)
Rising Sign = What Constellation was rising above the Horizon from your perspective when you were born. Highly dependant on location, particularly longitude but latitude too and can change very quickly so the exact minute is usually important.
how dare you insult us like this, you must be a cancer. typical cancers.
Frog returning to spawning location
???
joke
What does that mean
dude is joking, some species return to lay eggs in the place of their birth
I took this as a twin dating his sister, but I guess an astrology nut is worse?
My sister's wife is very into astrology and did my whole natal chart and had pages and pages of notes she wrote about me and my life according to the stars.
She's also a jesus freak and killed a family by driving into oncoming traffic with her own kids in the car. She said god told her to do it. Her own children lived at least but everyone was so critically injured they had to me medevacked away. She's in prison now for vehicular manslaughter. She was a total ass at the trial and told the victims' family that god wanted them dead and she was acting on his behalf. She told them it was a blessing from god.
When I think of crazy astrology girls, I think of my sister in law.
that story took the quickest and deepest dive off the cliff of insanity i've ever read
Yup. It was a wild ride for the whole family. I had been talking to her one day and the next thing i knew she'd killed a bunch of people and was in a coma from her own injuries.
I've known her since I was a small child and we've always gotten along well. I never in a million years would have seen that outcome coming.
A part of me doesn’t believe you but the other part finds you so convincing I can’t help but think it’s true.
It's all true, sadly.
It was so damn weird. I knew her since i was in kindergarten and she was always an atheist with witchy leanings. A couple of months before she let Jesus take the wheel, she randomly became a Christian. A super devout one, too. I knew it wasn't going to lead anywhere positive, but there was no way I could have predicted what she did.
The born again Christian’s are usually the weirdest.
"Born again" is irrelevant, I am "born again" because when I was 16, I decided to get baptized. Growing up in a community of "of faith" the biggest difference is the denomination they belong to. After working in a hospital and being exposed to it daily, I would point to mental well-being and their diagnosis. Too many who suffer from something or another will fall back on religion, that or the "they're following me," etc. Had a dude say the ekg machine was showing proof that trump was his father and he's the inheritor of Ohio and Kentucky. People snap and break mentally, and the ensuing rollercoaster is good for no one.
Plenty of patients I dealt with that had to, unfortunately or at least fortunately for them, since they're getting help, go to our psych ward and a fair amount of them had the "Jesus told me/God told me..." alot didn't like how they saw themselves, a fair amount would see themselves as cartoons. The brain is a fickle, fragile, and powerful organ.
You didn’t give alot of information but based on the little of what you said doesn’t make you a “Born again Christian” which is the type of person I was referring to.
Who are people, usually evangelical Christian’s which stress the born again experience as deeply personal conversation to accepting Jesus Christ as their savior. So your baptism would be more a product of being born again and not the cause. And yes evangelicals are not a denomination.
I’m typing this out while listening to a lecture from a phd so lol
If you have to say it...
And no, you're just biased by your lack of reading and experience in the religious world and medical field, so much for the PhD. Maybe not rely on it if it doesn't help you? This would be why I gave my experience growing up in a religious town, being born again (how are you an outsider going to affirm my disposition with any diety?), as well as working with countless people who fall back on it because of their diagnosis. Mofo, I can't give names, diagnostic of illness, and what their ramblings were. That's illegal, let alone an insurmountable amount of information to retain.
Since we're swinging irrelevant dicks, I'm typing this out at my job where I get paid 6 figures to do nothing except have other people be my entertainment....without needing a phd
Ok, this somehow managed to be worse than incest
So she's single...?
Much worse
Space Racism
Spacism
???
Astrology is space racism
Holy shit that is so creative
As a semi-astrology girl, I agree, keep your distance
My condolences, I hope you get better soon 😔
I'm a Scorpio, what would that mean tell me
I thought this was a joke about scammers trying to get PI like your birth town for stealing a password
I mean, tomato, tom-ah-to...
Both pronunciations are valid, which explains the usage. Potato pot-ah-to on the other hand
"Potato robato" -- Archer
As a sociology A-Level student, Archer is someone else entirely to me
And ALSO the world's best secret agent? .... I mean, how would you know...
The joke is that this was in r/explainthejoke like 2 days ago, as most posts in this sub are. Almost like it's this sub is just an intentional karma farm. I'm happy people are giving the real answers though. Love you Peters!
Maybe he's one part of an adopted twin set...
Again? This has been answered like 50.000 times.
The girlfriend is into astrology, which is BS.
100% astrology. 100% mom is right. I dated one for a year-ish. Crazy town.
God, that was the worst date of my life
Nobody can ever agree on this one if it's to do with astrology or him having a half sister
I've seen people saying it's astrology, half-sister an even a scam, but Idk lol. I think astrology is most likely
More on What Time Was I Born / astrology Q - https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/what-time-were-you-born
I’m an Exaggetarious, with the sun in my eyes.
Those aren’t even accurate. I’m a Pisces, so I’m supposed to be nice and sunny and socially competent and all that. I am not.
At least you are self-aware, I guess. /j
I think zodiacs and horoscopes kind of fun, like a novelty or something. They’re stupid, but fun to laugh at.
(What does /j mean? I have seen it a few places and never could make heads or tails if it).
It is a tag to indicate the poster is joking, like a less snarky /s (which is for sarcastic posting, ofc)
While the answer is astrology. I prefer the mom being sick over the fact that he just found his long lost sister that the mom refused to talk about her.
"Stay away, I know nothing about Rosa"
"Mom, I didn't say her name was Rosa, how'd you know"

To see if they might be twins. Asking for the hospital and time of birth.
In some cultures, very traditional parents are adamant about their children having arranged marriages. These cultures also have their own version of star sign matching, which is used to measure the compatibility of a prospective couple, and needs place and time of birth.
Guy is starting to work on his case for marrying a girl he seems to like and wants to use the star sign compatibility metric as part of his argument. Traditional mother puts her foot down.
I’m a Gemini
She’s your sister… don’t date her…
People, and especially fedora redditors, are so obsessed with shitting on astrology. It's harmless and a bit of fun. We used to live in a world with a lot of mysticism which, I agree, is infinitely inferior to science. But jfc, let people have fun and feel connected to something larger than themselves.
Religion is dead, let someone engage with the supernatural. Not everything has to be quantifiable, profitable, maximized.
the answer is s/he is trying to get the answers for recovering banks passwords
People saying half sister, or astrology and I'm here thinking. Is he trying to see if his age matches the girls for an, "of age" situation?
damn time for the weekly Thursday repost already?
How many times is this same screenshot gonna be posted here?
Everyone knows their sun sign, but to do deeper astrological star chart stuff you need to know their moon sign and rising sign. For those you need to know the time and location of their birth.
Unlike other pseudosciences like psychology and economics, astrology is pretty unpopular among western folks.
Psychology isn't pseudoscience. You just belong to a cult
I agree with the cult comment, but Psychology is at the very most a soft science. And at the very least a pseudoscience.
You can argue that psychology is a pseudoscience because it's "soft," or that we don't understand it enough to have it be as reliable as the way that we think of "science" and so it should be in a different category, but that not what most people mean by pseudoscience. And when the term comes up because you're discussing astrology it means something different entirely. There is no reason whatsoever to lump psychology in with astrology.
I agree.
Excellent comment, third Lebowski. Hope you get a movie soon
Astrology and psychology share the exact same levels of “science.”
No.
Psychology has real problems: most notably that it's far too easy to 'prove' a hypothesis using leading questions or other soft surveys/etc. Many studies (and even entire trains of thought) are based on faulty premises (and could be called pseudoscience). But there is ultimately some real scientific basis for treating some groups of people with treatments that have been statistically proven to improve their symptoms.
Astrology can't point to any level on which it works.
Like I said, psychology enjoys more popularity despite it being a pseudoscience.
That's not what I said. I can't deny that some pseudosciences have grown out of seemingly mainstream psychology and scientists need to be more vigilant in attacking that/stamping it out...but there is still a large core science that follows norms.
It will always be different from something like physics by nature.
Exactly. It will always be different from something like testable, repeatable, verifiable science.
Psychology is to neurology like astrology is to astronomy.
Psychology crosses over into medical science: do you accept the scientific benefits of drugs in other areas of medicine?
Human emotions and behaviors are too complicated for us to understand through pure neurology. Psychology grew out of necessity to develop treatments (and other understandings of behaviors) built off common states of being that we can identify with imperfect (but still statistically relevant) accuracy...including things like delusions common to schizophrenics, simple depressive states, etc.
Common states of being are an admittedly imperfect thing to build a science on, but with extensive and careful data useful conclusions can be reached. Scientists who aren't careful or ethical (and there are many) pose a large risk in such a science and they give it a bad name, but it shouldn't invalidate the studies that were performed well. There are many psychological medicines that have an undeniable and consistent effect.
Astrology is build on a fantasy...and there's not much more than can be said. There's no legitimate scientific proof of any of it.
Human emotions are too complicated for us to understand…so far. And psychology is the crutch we use. It’s often wrong and bad and based entirely on correlation, but it helps some people understand what they’re feeling.
Just like astrology.
Agree to disagree.
Absolutely not. Psychology as a field is susceptible to charlatans but has a good amount of mechanistic evidence and actual science (experimentation, peer review, etc.) behind its study.
Psychology utterly abandons its tenets every generation. Skinner, Freud, and Jung were all hopelessly wrong. The entire idea of behavioral psych has been debunked. This doesn't even touch on the horrors that Harlow committed on rhesus monkeys to bring us connection theory.
But like I said, psychology is a lot more popular than astrology.
Skinner, Freud, and Jung were all hopelessly wrong
Yes this is science at work. Being wrong is just a part of it. Newtonian physics is "wrong" too but he still asked all the right questions. of course classical physics are still quite useful in most situations (moreso than relativistic physics for most situations), but science is less about being right, and more about always working to be less wrong. Shitting on Psychology because of Freud and Jung is like shitting on chemistry because of alchemy, or shitting on astronomy because of geocentric models.
Except we do shit on alchemy. And we do shit on geocentrism. And we should shit on psychology too.
Psychology is a cute little way for men to pretend they understand human personality. Just like astrology, and honestly just like economics.
Except we do shit on alchemy. And we do shit on geocentrism.
You are being intentionally dense. I included those because we have moved past them, just like psychology has moved past Jung and Freud. Geocentrism and alchemy are outdated and disproved concepts of astronomy and chemistry respectively, just like Jung and Freud and certain aspects of Skinner's work are also outdated and disproved. We simply do not have 300-500 years of meaningful progress in the study of psychology yet like we do with chemistry and astronomy. That is a valid judgement of the field. It is not valid to say that psychology is not a real science, because there is evidence based therapy that does real good for real people despite our collective understanding of human cognition being incomplete by comparison.
This is also why science (and by extension, psychology) is not a dogma. Science relies on models, and all models have limitations. The objective is to make models that are more correct in more situations. Newtonian physics doesn't work close to the speed of light or at the subatomic scale, so physicists developed relativity and quantum physics to cover the gaps. Those who study psychology are also working to improve their models, both by abandoning the harmful and ineffective aspects of old models and keeping what is still useful, and exploring new models with the old concepts that still have merit. This is not without issue, but there are no fields in academia that are free of dogmatic thinkers, liars, and charlatans either.
Psychology is a cute little way for men to pretend they understand human personality.
Psychology is a female-dominated field as of recently. Sure it was male dominated as most of academia was for the 20th century, but that is a completely false judgement now. By that metric, physics is also just a cute way for hairless monkeys to pretend they know how the universe works, because there are 2 models that accurately describe physics in different ways, but do not agree with each other when calculating the same phenomenon, which is actually a big friggin' problem.
Disclosure: I'm an engineer so I have no reason to defend psychology personally, but I do care deeply about the way that people understand the purpose and methods of science.
Listen I realize that the pseudoscience of psychology is a hill upon which many many westerners will die; the cult surrounding its constant reinventions, spectacular failures (Skinner, along with lead poisoning, is why boomers are so fucked up), overblown claims, and gaping blind spots is extremely strong.
Psychology has already been supplanted by the actual science of neurology, and as that field grows in knowledge, the practice of asking the brain to self report and then correlating and analyzing those reports bring about some sort of hazy causal prediction on human behavior will fade.
That being said: I try not to yuck other people’s yum, whether they be astrologers or Christians or people who think The Force is real. I have failed in that attempt today, although I would stress that the failure was only because astrology gets such outsized hostility.
Feel free to continue thinking that everyone who was neglected develops BPD, or that the desire to have sex with your mother is a driving force in your adult life, or that everyone who acts selfish suffers from Narcissistic Personality Disorder. You do you. Personally that’s just as accurate to me as thinking people born in early May tend to be stubborn, enjoy eating a little too much, and have an excellent work ethic.
Neurology and psychology are not mutually exclusive studies. If you really think a neurosurgeon will be able to fix daddy issues I"ve got nothing else to say to you. It's the same reason that hospitalized people might require both surgery and physiotherapy. One's progress doesn't negate the value or correctness of the other.
You should have stopped at the first paragraph.
Show me the difference between those three studies, all of which exist to predict the future based on weak past correlations.
I've heard people riff on psychology before but, please, why economics? That one's new to me.
It's self referential. Impossible to tell whether certain things are "innate" or like they are because everyone that deals with money expects it to be that way due to having studied economics. I don't think it's a pseudoscience per se but it's not like physics where things happen no matter what scientists say.
Economics is a predictive field based on nothing but conjecture and past correlation. It’s literally astrology for dudes.
Finally a person that is not retarded and uneducated.
The girlfriend is trying to see if their moon phases match up.
Mom said it was my turn to post this!
I in fact did not stay away from that girl
Spiritual women tryna read him
I'll never date another new agey woman ever again. Here's the thing, all of them I've encountered use the bullshit that fills their head to maintain an air of smug superiority over you as you are unenlightened and uncultured simultaneously neglecting anything good they might know to apply to themselves and their own lives. Endless unwarranted criticism and baseless presumptions abound. They always want to reduce the complex to laughable simplicity in the most round about far reaching of ways and almost always suffer some sort mental affliction
Re POST
"I wanna do your chart" is the equivalent of "just admiring the shape of your skull"
Astrology, it instantly clicked because I've actually texted my mom the same phrase.
The girl he’s talking to is a Scorpio probably.
Either obsessed with zodiac compatibility or scamming him for security question info. Probably the first one but the second is often possible with that information
Ahahaha. Astrology girls really are crazy.
Batshit astrology girl.
I get time but to not know your place of birth is clowntastic.
I did this when I signed up for a popular astrology social media app and my mom sent me this meme… it was cause of a cute person…
I don’t understand what there is not to get
Stay away from star sign reading heathens
My ex bf asked me that xD then went on about how according to the zodiac stuff we made "so much sense, and also no sense at all"
Every way you can see it, his mom is doing him a favor
Astrology hoe
girls who make decisions based off tarot, crystals, tea leaves, the way the wind blows, etc. are not to be trusted.
Astrology.
Maybe incest? The guy is asking when and where he was born to know if a girl is truly his sister and the dad tells him to stay away from her because they are indeed siblings and that why the dad is disgusted?
psht, astrology
I always thought it was about them wanting to do it where they were born
Nah that shits kinda real
But astrology girls are hot :(
As I read this thread I can feel my brain rotting.... time to go
This joke has already been posted recently. Rule 2.
