What old movies were sequels to much older movies.

The first one that comes to mind is The Color of Money (1986) which is a sequel to The Hustler (1961). The Color of Money is good, but The Hustler is a classic.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers from 1978 starts with the main character from Invasion of the Body Snatchers from 1956 warning everybody. Great segue and both excellent and creepy movies.

2010: The Year We Make Contact was released in 1984, and is a sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey, which was released in 1968.

2001 is one of the greatest movies of all time. 2010 isn't on that level, but it's worth watching.

Rescuers Down Under (1990) was a sequel to The Rescuers (1977)

Psycho came out in 1960, Psycho 2 came out 23 years later in 1983

There was a sequel to Carrie 1972 that came out also 23 years later called The Rage:Carrie 2 in 1999

The Odd Couple 2 1998 was a sequel to The Odd Couple 30 years after

The Fly, The Thing and The Blob were all remakes that came out in the eighties and the originals were from the fifties. All three are excellent movies - the Fly is a particular favourite of mine - but I can't vouch for the originals as I haven't seen them.

Return to Oz (1985) is a sequel to The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Dawn of the Dead (1978) -- sequel to Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) was a sequel to the Star Trek TV Series (Episode - Space Seed) which aired in 1967.

Texasville (1990) is the sequel to 1971’s The Last Picture Show, with much of the original cast.

Someone pointed out to me that it would be cool to do ANOTHER sequel to the Hustler/Color of Money films to make it a trilogy with an older Tom Cruise mentoring some hot star of the day. I concur.

"The Last of the Mohicans" had an earlier prequel called "We are Starting to Run Low on Mohicans."

Fritz Lang has a few movies about "Dr Mabuse," from 1922, 1933, and 1960.

What about Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon in Beach Blanket Bingo (1965) among other beach movies they made and Back to the Beach (1987)?

Coppola's The Conversation and Will Smith's Enemy of the State, which brings back Gene Hackman's character. Gives him a different name but that's what they were going for.

Back to the Beach '87 was a late sequel to the Beach Party movies from the '60s..

The Two Jakes is a sequel to Chinatown, it's pretty mediocre and Chinatown an all time classic so not sure how much I can recommend it

Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau starred in The Odd Couple in the 60's and did a sequel in the late 90's that wasn't very good, but in the early 90's they made Grumpy Old Men, a surprise hit that wasn't technically a sequel but clearly reprised their Odd Couple characters. That might be worth checking out, and it had a decent sequel itself, also in the 90's.

Die Hard is a pseudo sequel to The Detective (1968) as they were both based on books by Rodrick Thorpe whose main character was Joe Leland in the books. Die Hard was based on Nothing Lasts Forever. In fact the studio had to offer the lead to Frank Sinatra first as he was contractually obligated to play Leland in any sequels.

Crazy cause it’s almost shot for shot, just guns instead of swords and arrows. Both really good watches if you’re looking for something and get down with both genres.

Not exactly what you're asking for but More American Graffiti (1979) always felt to me like it was made many years later than American Graffiti (1973) even though the characters are only 2, 3, and 4 years older than in the original. Probably due to different directors.

Psycho was 1960 and Psycho II was 1986.

I think the record for live action films, though, is Gone With The Wind from 1939 to Scarlett from 1994.

A star is born. There are 4 of them. So the one closest to 1980s is the 1976 remake.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was like a kids version of James Bond as it was written by the same guy. Had a protagonist who used gadgets, went to a foreign land to solve a problem and a girl friend with suggestive name. Well a chunk of the movie was a dream we think but then the car actually flew at the end. The granddad was kinda like Q as well.

Also in the movie the entire opening is like another movie about the history of the car racing.

Psycho 2 (1983) sequel to Hitchcock's 1960 Psycho. The original is a masterpiece, but the sequel is surprisingly not that bad.

There was a mostly forgotten sequel to National Velvet (1944) called…wait for it…International Velvet (1978) starring Tatum O’Neal, Christopher Plummer and Anthony Hopkins. Velvet returns but no longer played by Elizabeth Taylor (now played by the director’s wife, who won the role over some bigger named actresses like Julie Andrews, who could’ve reunited with Plummer). It was okay but the sport is no longer racing, it’s Equestrian events at the Olympics. Pretty much only essential viewing for fanatics of the first, Tatum O’Neal completists or Equestrian lovers. Otherwise, a fairly dull affair overall.

I know this isn’t older but after by Anna Todd never should’ve existed how to ruin a book in 2.5 seconds because that movies were awful and they ruined those books. It’s to me now the movies and then I’ll still read the books, but those movies are awful.

I saw Army of Darkness before I knew it was a sequel to the Evil Dead movies. I had not watched the Evil Dead movies before that, but saw the VHS cover for Evil Dead II in video rental stores.
