Using This SubredditAnnouncement
Community Guidelines
  1. Be excellent with each other.

  2. Be mindful regarding spoilers. Reddit's universal >!Spoiler Tags!< are mandatory when discussing plot details of movies.

  3. If you wish to be banned, do any of the following: Be rude, harass, ignore the subreddit's rules, promote your site/blog/article/channel/etc., promote your app/company, or post about a movie you worked on. This subreddit isn't your link farm.

  4. Due to Administrators' past actions against this subreddit, we have a ZERO tolerance policy regarding piracy. You will be banned if you request or share links to full features, if you ask or inform how to pirate, or if you mention a pirating site/app/etc.

  5. For Requesting posts:

    • Use a descriptive title that lets people know if they might be able to help or not
    • Double check that your request wouldn't be more suitable in one of the subreddits outlined in Rule #8
    • We require a minimum of 125 characters in the body of the post to ensure quality requests and suggestions
  6. For Suggesting posts:

    • Suggest a single film, and no more than one every 24 hours
    • Mandatory: Include the Title of the Film in the Title of the Post
    • Encouraged: Using this format: Film Name (Year)
    • Whet the appetite, don't go into detail
    • Do not repeat a Suggestion that has been posted in the last 3 months
    • Don't suggest a Barred Film (listed in the sidebar/wiki)
    • Only suggest a film you've seen and enjoyed
    • We require a minimum of 125 characters in the body of the post to ensure quality suggestions
  7. Links must be to neutral informative sources; such as TheMovieDB, Letterboxd, Rotten Tomatoes or Wikipedia. Both Youtube and IMDb are not considered a neutral source. Again, be mindful that this subreddit isn't your link farm.

  8. The subreddit isn't meant for:

Barred Suggestions

Barred movies mean that no one should use them as a Suggestion. You can definitely reply to a post if someone wants a movie that suits it. These are films that come up so frequently in post discussions that the community at large is aware about their existence and posting about them is just pandering.

Barred Suggests
12 Angry Men (1957)CoherenceDonnie DarkoEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Everything Everywhere All at OnceKnives OutThe Man from EarthOldboy (2003)
Parasite (2019)The PrestigeWhiplash

Pro Tip: This means these movies are really good and you should probably check them out.

Optimal Use

This subreddit shouldn't be used for reviews, blindly suggesting lists of movies or just asking for generally universal acclaimed films. Google can easily supply all of those answers. The best way to use this subreddit is understanding that you're leveraging crowdsourcing to identify an itch to scratch. If you don't know specifically what you're looking for, then a Googled question will answer you.

You can easily find top Sci-Fi, Horror, Drama and all of the genres with a search. Someone has already asked and answered so many common requests: Top Korean New Wave, Grounded Science Fiction, Universally Acclaimed Movies, Specific Types of Horror or Thrillers; and so much more. The optimal use of this subreddit is when your question requires a human intelligence. Each time you ask for a movie to watch, the replies will be tailored exactly for you. Give as much detail as possible for what you're looking for and you'll be surprised at some of the answers.

If you think you have a generic question, check the FAQ.

If you've begun to trust this community with their picks, we do have plenty of Monthly Round-ups of Best Movies:

What are the top films you saw in May 2024 and why? Here are my picks:

Abigail (2024)

Unfortunately, I was spoiled past the initial premise of kidnappers realizing they've abducted a ruthless mobster's daughter. It didn't matter, Abigail is a great production of the directing duo Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillet. They brought rich colours, readible darkness and a satisfying group of actors who executed each of their roles impressively. Seriously, I don't want to praise one actor specifically because my paragraph review would need a lot more lines; if you enjoyed this team's past works, you'll find Abigail to be an even further refinement.

Boy Kills World (2023)

The fourth credit after the movie ends is the action and fight designer, he really made compelling action scenes that sell this movie. It's bloody, it's ridiculous and kind of silly at times, but I dug it like 80s ads for RoboCop action figures, despite that movie being Rated R. Jessica Roethe's character intelligently wears a helmet, so when she's in enforcer mode we get some truly awesome fight cheorography pulled off by a stunt performer who can do it. A love letter to beat 'em ups.

Civil War (2024)

Americans think a Civil War is inevitable and based off of their propaganda machine of American Army sponsored action movies, they'll think it'll be awesome. Garland intends to grab them by the snout and rub their nose in what a dirty mess that would be. I hope that the ugliness in this movie is enough to thwart the typical failing of Anti-War Movies but I doubt that. Those salivating at the idea of the next American Civil War wouldn't be deterred by the horrors but readily take notes.

Destroy All Neighbours (2024)

Every now and then, you come across something that feels like it was made specifically for you. Growing up, I listened to a lot of prog and power metal for their complex melodies and stories. I also have a soft spot for splatter comedies, there's something I find oddly wholesome that the protagonists being able to crack jokes despite being covered in blood and guts. I loved Destroy All Neighbours and you probably wouldn't but that's OK. There's probably a film out there that speaks directly to you that I wouldn't get the appeal of and I'm glad you discovered it.

Dune: Part Two (2024)

I've been catching snippets of Dune's music and it made me want to revisit. A second time through, there are a few more flaws; rough spots, at best, like very clever tricks to make a particular scene flow together. And then I noticed even more interesting bits that I didn't notice the first time around. Overall, Dune: Part Two has risen in my estimation even further.

The Fall Guy (2024)

A love letter to stunts and how they make movies thrilling. It's nice to see a direct pull back wide so you can see how they get rough and tumble, letting stunts get their time in the sun instead of being relegated to a chopped up cut that no one knows what the hell is going on. It's also fun and light, just like a popcorn flick should be. If you're a fan of action, you need to see this.

Infested (2023)

A consistent horror movie with no contrived struggles or wins, everything is clearly telegraphed which enunciates the tension. The treatment of the protagonists due to their obvious poverty is a nice touch, as you could easily see someone richer being treated better. Infested then also manages to cram in a pretty good 'Elevated Horror' where the trauma of the film requires them to re-examine their previous problems. The spiders were also incredible, those with arachnaphobia who might be able to stomach spider-adjacent monsters will probably find the film overwhelming.

L.A. Confidential (1997)

Just shy of perfection; it's hard to move past what I now know of Kevin Spacey. Before, I thought he was a good actor and now I know it is movies that let him be himself. That taints the rest of the cast's performances, I couldn't see the character just the exploiter. Which is a shame, as look, writing and acting is otherwise phenomenonal.

Lisa Frakenstein (2024)

God, armed with Diablo Cody's words and under Zelda Williams direction, Kathryn Newton embodies the alt girl chic of the 80s of your dreams and nightmares. It goes full tilt into being a Gothic Horror Comedy which I realize is actually rare. The movie focuses on the drama, letting the comedy to organically come up, which means it is a delightful surprise instead of contrived. Cody even makes the typical different, such as having a nice, wholesome stepsister played incredibly by Liza Soberano. The test for enjoying this movie is simple; at any point were you obsessed with Beetlejuice? In which case, run to check this flick out.

Movies that require you to compete/play a game to surviveREQUESTING

I love movies that's main storyline is a group of people competing or playing some type of game for their survival. An example of some of the movies I'm talking about are Circle, Exam, Ready or Not, Choose or Die, Escape Room - I feel like I've watched every movie in the genre and I'm craving more haha.

Suggest mindf*ck movies please REQUESTING

Movies like timelapse, the one i love, whiplash, vivarium, midsommar, mother!, shutter island etc. are my favorites. Any movies that have an unpredictable storyline that's going to make me think about it for days LOL. Weird movies with unique plots, either scifi thriller, psychological movies that'll make me say “wtf” after the ending.

Movies that just drop you right into it and let the viewer catch up?REQUESTING

I don't mean ones that just start later then jump back in time needlessly like John wick, but ones where you're just plopped into an unfamiliar situation and things play out without too much explanation and as it goes you understand things. Memento would fit the bill

I just watched Godzilla minus one and God dam it is good I highly recommend if you haven't seen it yet. SUGGESTING

Hollywood needs to take some notes on how it is done I got about ten minutes into the latest Godzilla/ king offering from Hollywood and nearly died of boredom. Godzilla minus one is a gaint breath of fresh air.

Movie about adult male best friends that isn’t centered around getting laid, an unserious comedy, or bad boy action movieREQUESTING

My best friend recently passed away by suicide and I’m sad and nostalgic.

I wanted a movie that felt similar to our adult relationship but seemingly all of the movie recommendations about adult male best friends are like swingers, dumb and dumber, I love you man etc. not really the vibe.

It would be more fitting if there it was just a drama, mostly about two guys building a life, career, supporting each other through breakups, actually showing love while sharing fun experiences like movies, art, books, sports, parties, travel etc.

I’m riffing here but yeah would be nice

EDIT: thank you for all of the recommendations. I’ll be combing this tomorrow. more response that expected. Very grateful!

Non-superhero films that have a good villain but a mediocre protagonistREQUESTING

A hero is only as good as his/her villain. But what about those movies that had a memorable villain but the hero was not terrible but kinda forgettable?

It'll be a fun study for me to do.

Suggestions for easy watching movies pleaseREQUESTING

Looking for suggestions for what I call "Sunday afternoon films" Easy watching but still really good films, that you don't need to concentrate too hard on and don't take themselves too seriously. No particular genre, films such as Star Trek, National Treasure, The Goonies

What are the movies that a cinephile cannot miss ? REQUESTING

So I recently realized when someone asked me about like some of the popular movies i haven't watched a decent amount of those movies. I found out that I know about those movies but i haven't watch them . I was watching those movies that are not that much popular but was great.

And because of that I get this comment from other people saying " I cant believe you haven't watched this movie..!".

So can you guys help me to find the movies that are popular and almost every person have watched ? I'm thinking about taking some time and finishing those movies..

(Thank you in advance and forgive me for any mistakes in English.)

Really weird but good films REQUESTING

I am looking for films that have a really weird tone to them like they have come from another planet but are good films with an interesting story and not just being weird without any depth to them, mostly looking at horror/thriller genres for this topic but will accept other genres as well.

Movies where a human develops a genuine friendship with a monster/creature that doesn't end with the monster dying?SpoilerREQUESTING

Best movie premises?REQUESTING

Just finished The Truman Show and really loved it because of how novel the premise is. It's basically "what if your life was unknowingly a TV show?" I'm curious what are other incredible movie concepts like that. The movie itself doesn't even need to be good necessarily just an amazing idea right from the jump.

Character with the most charisma REQUESTING

What are some of the most charismatic characters (main or supporting roles)? Genre doesn’t matter, just characters that, because of the way they were written and how the actor/actress portrays them on screen, are just super cool and interesting. This is relatively easy enough with TV roles I think. But I’m curious to see what we can collectively think up related to film.

Please, help me find more joyful, animated films that heavily focus on friendshipREQUESTING

It’s been a bad month. My ocd is crazy bad right now. Please, help me distract from the intrusive thoughts with some really pleasant animated films. Bonus points for deep friendships and action scenes! Here are some favorites:

  • Kung Fu panda series
  • the Lego movie series
  • the incredible 1+2
  • Zootopia can’t watch this anymore though :(
  • the emperors new groove
  • Castle in the sky

Less happy movies i still love so much: - fantastic Mr fox (not so happy, but i love it) - Surfs Up - Atlantis - Treasure planet - iron giant -the boy and the beast

Movies That Show The WORST Of HumanityREQUESTING

what are some genuinely misanthropic films that depict humans in the worst light possible? I'd prefer more personal stories over sweeping war epics and things like that. Either day-to-day banality of evil or over-the-top evil, doesn't really matter, just stuff that doesn't give you any faith in humanity

Which movie depicts our most likely future? REQUESTING

Until I find better representative movie, believe we are headed for an “Elysium” (2013) situation. If the Uber-wealthy are not in space, it’s underwater, or on a domed island. In recent years, many billionaires are rumored building elaborate underground bunkers; maybe that will remain their way out. The rest of us will choke, starve, irradiate and continue to fight among ourselves like we are currently doing. 🤧

Are we to be dystopian or utopian?

Edit/update: Thanks for the good replies! I’ve got some viewing and re-viewing to do—now I just have to find where they’re streaming or it’s off to the library for scratched dvd’s (thanks you a-holes—you know who you are)

Hello!👋 listen I could really use everyone’s help!REQUESTING

When Covid started I lost my job and my home, then had to also give hospice care to my grandparents who raised me and my mother in law who is known since I was 14.😔❤️ Anyway we are just barely starting to feel like people again and live indoors and get semi back on our feet. So long story short my partner and I feel very out of the loop with a lot of pop culture in the way of movies. Not that it was ever a top priority but we feel we missed out on some cool things. Looking up a list of the best movies from the last four years is not helpful. Could you all please contribute to our post what you feel were the best can’t miss movies since 2020?! EXCLUDING MARVEL pretty please lol thank you in advance lovely people 😊😊

tell me scary movies like hereditary?REQUESTING

it made me seriously scared, like. terrified. i watched it when i was 18, and i had just gotten over my fear of the dark at that point. it made me terrified all over again. i’m so terrified to watch it again. it has actually traumatized me. my eyes get watery when i talk about it and it makes me look over my shoulder in the daytime when i recall certain parts. it’s my favorite horror movie ive ever traumatized myself with because it’s genuinely scary. i will recommend it to anyone, and refuse to watch it ever again cause i’m too scared.

ANYWAY. ANY RECCOMENDATIONS?? 😩 I’ve seen Midsommar already, I’m aware it’s made by the same people or so. I think it’s interesting! But not scary. I want a movie that’s actually SCARY! Like make me feel dread and suspense, make me look over my shoulder, i need some supernatural, paranormal forces. I need something that’s gonna make me sleep with a light on tonight.

may i request no exorcism, no excessive gore like a movie that’s banned in a bunch of countries. i want to be traumatized cause it’s super scary not traumatized cause of something like a serbian film or something.

Some movies i can think of that id like to watch movies similar to are Shutter, Hereditary, Drag Me To Hell, Gerald’s Home, Autopsy of Jane Doe, etc.

Some movies i have watched that you might end up recommending is any movie above, The Grudge, As Above So Below, Talk To Me, Mama, etc.

if you’re not sure, recommend it anyway! recommend as much as you’d like! explain why you’d think so! i’d love to hear anyone’s reccs. Please make me scared to have my feet out of my blanket tonight

im ashamed, but any suggestions for movies where the guy rescues the girl? REQUESTING

I want a full blown romantic rescue movie, but not the cheesy kind that makes me regret my desires lol. I'm looking for something a bit more cinematic.

Movies about rebel/troubled teenagers or youngsREQUESTING

I'm looking for movies that center about troubled teenagers or young people dealing with their lifes and having problems and doing things, the important is that they are dealing with stuff, taking drugs etc. I'm specially interested in west asian movies about this topic but all suggestions are welcome. Some movies I've watched and liked with this topic: -Somewhere (Gregg Araki) -Girls interrupted -Kids -Project X

Palm Springs is the most underrated time loop movie SUGGESTING

Recently watched Palm Springs without any expectations and purely because of the two lead actors (When Jake Peralta met The Mother!!), but was blown away by the genius of the movie.

The way they integrated the familiar concept of the time loop while adding their own unique plot to it.

What are your thoughts? Anyone else feel this way?

Can I please have some suggestions of romantic/love story films according to my favorite ones?REQUESTING

While a lot of these are animated, I am perfectly fine with live action as long as it captures a similar feeling I got from these movies. I want love stories that have like sort of universality to their expression of love. Ones that feel deeply personal and vulnerable. Ones which hold a deep sense of longing. That need to find connection and even possibly become a better person in the process through that love either by holding on to it or losing it in the process.

Here are some of my favorite films about love:

• Her (2013) • Millennium Actress (2001) • Whisper Of The Heart (1995) • I Want To Eat Your Pancreas (2018) • Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004) • In The Mood For Love (2000) • Corpse Bride (2005)

Also, not exactly a film but one love TV series I love "Bloom Into You", which is like my favorite love story of all time.
