Minecraft Snapshot 24w20a
Official NewsFor reference, witches previously would drop .25 redstone on average. Now they drop 6 on average. This is a 2400% buff.
Witches now always drop 4-8 redstone dust on death
I tested by killing around 40 with Looting III sword on Creative, redstone dust averages around 7.5 per witch with Looting III.
Normal redstone dust per witch kill averages around 6 (killing with method other than Looting III sword)
Are their other drops effected? Was thinking of making a witch farm and a bunch of potion ingredient farms near it, but I also want the gunpowder, etc
nope, the other witch loots are not as spectacular.
as long as they are not lessened in favor of redstone it should be fine. I usually dont run low on redstone anywho
Was 0-5 with Fortune 3. Now it's 4-8. So an average increase from 2.5 to 6. (Let's face it, if you're building a witch farm you have access to enchantments, and even if not, any tutorials are gonna base the rates on having F3) so just before anyone gets too excited, I'd say the rates have effectively doubled.
average increase from 2.5 to 6
Witches weren't guaranteed to drop redstone before, so it'd be well below 2.5. The .25 I calculated in my comment accounted for actual drop rates via a calculator website. Looting III now results in a 7.5 average, as witches are guaranteed to drop redstone, rather than having a relatively low chance. Prior to this update, witches had a 1 in 8 chance of each item, with 1-3 different drops per kill. However, even if a witch were to roll redstone, it could still then drop 0-2. Effectively it would have to pass 2 rng checks to drop redstone, drastically lowering the average drop.
Typical witch farms also aren't player-kill driven, so I intentionally compared baseline numbers without Looting
Typical witch farms also aren't player-kill driven, so I intentionally compared baseline numbers without Looting
I'm not so sure this is necessarily the case.
The low mob rates of witch farms make looting relatively attractive, as transporting the witches to the player doesn't really reduce the rates as much as it would on farms that are more strongly limited by the mobcap.
Was 0-5 with Fortune 3. Now it's 4-8.
So, you are assuming that the new drop rate isn't going to be affect by Looting 3?
They are on a roll on very old bugs aint they ?
Proud of em tbh. That’s a lot of old bugs.
That's good
Seems like they're doing a lot of fundamental rewrites especially with the new data structures. I have a hunch they want to rewrite the game so that people can effortlessly add new content via datapacks, and then they can "finalize" the game to stop releasing new content of their own. I mean, they can't keep developing it forever.
Then what will they do? It’s their whole thing
A new game? I dunno
Minecraft 2 incoming
They're finally making Minceraft, with Herobrine
Big day for witch slayers
Witchfinder Sergeant Shadwell is ready with his pin.
Good for redstone farms.
Like... I'll concede the piston sounds were quite loud.
But this is a hell of an overcorrection.
It's gone from mechanical to some cheap clicky plastic pen.
And sounds moist when you put one or two on an observer clock...
It’s just wet clicking. I hate it.
The thing that I loved about my contraptions was the sound of pistons working it seemed like a factory.
Yeah I can barely hear the piston over the lever sound at the default sound levels.
Exactly, it sounds like a door now.
doors are much louder compared to this btw.
I think he means the older Alpha door sounds, like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-tQhdaXd80
Yeah I'm changing it right back. I don't even use pistons but their sounds weren't a problem, they were satisfying.
The current piston sounds are great when it's a single piston firing once. When you have mutliple continuously firing, you might as well just mute the game.
I think if they just turned down the natural volume. Or at the very least implemented a diminishing return on the sound effect so one piston alone is fine, but the second piston is half that volume. Then the third is a fourth. Then an eighth. Then sixteenth. And on and on.
Time to make redstone even laggier
I've seen a few people suggest that, but it would just be a really inefficient way to code it. How would you decide which piston get's which volume? Does it only effect pistons that fire on the same tick? How does it work for multiple players/do you have to calculate the volumes for each player separately. Makes a lot more sense just to tune the volume and attenuation.
or to add a slider for it lol
Yeahh, they should've just made it sound more well-oiled instead of a total overhaul. Just a smooth "Whump-Thock" noise instead of a "tlik" sound.
I read another comment being oh so proud of Mojang.
Like... I get it. A thing that has been said for 10+ years has finally be fixed. Great! But... why now? There have been datapacks and mods for years that reduce sounds of specific thing or even implement a better sounds option menu. Now I'm supposed to be exited at this... microwaved leftover type of "fix"?
Again this is a complete misreading of the Mojang on what the problem actually is.
First of, pistons are louder than almost everything else. Feels like a piston is louder than a trapdoor, those volume levels should've been equalized before this "fix".
Second, the sound itself was okay. There is no need to alter that, especially not this drastically.
Third, the issue is not only that pistons are loud, it's that pistons are the loudest and if you turn your game sounds down for pistons, you turn down a lot of other things as well. They should just re-work the sound options menu to be more clear and uniform and give more options. Shoot, not just sound, but every menu needs a revamp.
Less noisy piston sounds* and more Redstone from witches!
This is actually a decent snapshot.
**Seriously...
Wait till you hear what it sounds like... I would have preferred if they just made the old sound quieter, rather than the lever flip flopping noise they've chosen.
I just heard it demonstrated in a redstone door in Xismas snapshot video....omg it sounds awful! Frankly, it sounds like fapping when there's lots of pistons at once.
Yeah it's absolutely atrocious, I don't understand what they were thinking.
The volume is definitely better, but the sound is just bad. A piston is a strong contraption, it needs that KA-TCHUNG sound.
Yes, it simply lacks that impact old sound has
Like the old door sound, when you opened it felt like it really was made of cubic meters of wood.
Listening to it, you're absolutely right. It sounds close to the old door creak.
Sound of pistons should scale depending on the number of pistons in the area, simple fix lol
or just add a "redstone components" slider and keep the sound the same lol. like people actually wanted.
This could also address the same problem with droppers, dispensers, observers etc. This wasn't an issue just specifically in the case of pistons
This might be useful in THE sheep contraption if you know what I mean.
It sounds like the piston was silenced by dunking it in lube. It sounds so wet.
When dozens of pistons are going off simultaneously, now it just sounds like someone eating crab legs in one of those mukbang asmr videos.
Do not like.
I feel like the new piston noise is a massive overcorrection; Maybe keep the default piston noise or make it slightly quieter, and make it so you can "lubricate" the piston with wax(honeycomb) or another item for the new, quieter sound?
I do hope they give a similar treatment to Dispensers/droppers and minecarts though
Don’t give them the idea of waxing pistons to make it quieter. That would be more of a pain than an actual solution.
I guess for builds with a whole lot of pistons, but a good middle ground is needed somewhere
I think a better solution would be a volume control category for “mechanical blocks.” We have volume sliders for different categories of sounds such as mobs, weather, and jukeboxes/note blocks. “Mechanical blocks” could include sounds for pistons, droppers, and dispensers.
We'd be better off than before.
If you would really prefer having loud pistons over having to wax them, then just don't wax them?
I’d want a solution that is more well thought out than just an obscure game mechanic.
Besides, for builds with lots of pistons, that would require people to put wax on every single piston they place.
Craft waxed pistons the same way you craft waxed copper
64 pistons and 64 wax in a formless recipe
they do care about witch farms
With the raid farm nerf, i guess its apt to buff witch farms so technical players can still mass harvest redstone.
This. Our only other method would be villager trading which imo they dont want people to to rely on. Not to mention thats not really a farm.
Bloody hell Mojang, all you had to do with the piston noise was lower the volume and/or make a similar noise, not change it into…. whatever that wet flopping fish sound the new one is.
I don’t understand why so many devs either over or under correct in the worst way possible with so many things, besides the old piston noise is too iconic to completely change.
They should change the sound of droppers and dispenser as well, I would also categorise those as too loud
edit: i've actually just heard the new sound, its fucking horrible lmao. all they had to do was lower in the loudness of it, not change it into this wet sponge door thingy
I’d rather they give the option to turn the sound of them down then outright change it
You can. Turn down block sounds.
I wanna be able to turn down piston sounds without affecting all blocks
They could add a “mechanical blocks” category that includes pistons, hoppers, dispensers, and droppers. They do that anyway with noteblocks and jukeboxes so I don’t think it’s that much of a stretch to ask for a new sound category.
hoppers
I too hate the sound of hoppers.
Whoops
I meant dispensers.
Fair
The attribute change is great, now my scale won't reset every time I die and break my immersion as a 0.5 block tall duende
this is a great change, but they also need to add a way to reset your attributes to default. 1 isn’t the default for every attribute, so i would die to reset them so i didn’t have to remember a bunch of very specific numbers
Found the Vinesauce Joel watcher.
The year is 2025. We are now on data pack version 142 and resource pack version 50. Minecraft version 1.22 has just been released.
If they keep changing how Data Packs work, Minecraft Datapack makers are going to compete with Mod makers soon.
I think that might be the intent - and is a good thing for the modding community in the long term.
That is 100% intent - they want to achieve it so players can bring mods from java to bedrock on consoles.
That happened with 1.20.5/6 already..
I still dont get pumping version number so often, while its still in development.
That's the whole point of development though? To make new features? And when you make new features, you bump up the version number to differentiate it.
Its not needed tough.. snapshot is still in development. Thats why the game in snapshot has own version numbers.
But who makes datapack for snapshots? Just raise it, with final releases.. Thats the problem many have (me included).
My question is, why not raise it? It's not like a higher version number is making a negative impact.
I know it would look nice to have datapack v22, resourcepack v22 and minecraft v1.22, but it's not meant to please peoples OCD
Won't happen unless they add the ability to add blocks & items.
It's just an arbitary number. Call it datapack version 1.42 if you like, it doesn't actually change anything.
This was more just poking fun at the fact that over the course of the 1.20.x updates it's jumped up over 30 versions.
it’s kind of annoying. i would update my packs each snapshot and then have to update them again once a new one came out and changed the location of a composter sound or something most people don’t use. then i had to update the pack format again while changing nothing else. the ability to support multiple formats in the .mcmeta remedies this, but it also defeats the purpose of having pack formats to begin with
it used to take multiple versions to update the pack format. i don’t think they have to update it at all in development versions, adding features to a specific format until official release works just fine.
it's a fair reason why most of us just "watch this space" about the updates, and only play on the releases.
why no, I havent updated to 1.20. I'm still trying to nail down working mods for a "most likely stable release"
I wish Java had native controller support so I could play these snapshots :(
Use an input converter like DS4 windows, then you don’t have to wait for mods to update.
Especially if you're used to Bedrock's controller support, using an input converter like this is good for basic things like walking around, but it becomes difficult when you start doing things like swimming or flying an elytra, because it's not a static 1 to 1 mapping.
Most people only play a snapshot for a couple hours and don’t bring their worlds across, so it’ll do fine.
Thanks for the tip
I know you explicitly say "native controller" support, but super quick workaround (I just did this in 10 minutes)
If you have steam, go to library, bottom left corner you should see "add non-steam game." Click on it, and either find Minecraft Launcher in the pop-up or go to Browse and find the exe file for the launcher. Then add. When you enter big picture mode through steam and open the game with a controller. By default it Steam has a normal gamepad, but open controller options and button mapping and change the configuration scheme to mouse and WASD. By default this does a lot. Right trigger is left click and vice versa. A is jump. Y is offhand item. B is open inventory. X is set to reload my shaders which I guess works but I'll give it drop items. Shoulder buttons cycle through hotbar (Though you'll need to swap them to match the direction). D-Pad does the first four items in the hotbar. In addition I've bounded sprint to left paddle and shift to right paddle.
Granted, I have a steam controller so Mouse input is far more natural with it. If you have a standard twin stick controller, I'd advise setting up right stick to have mouse output. But with Steams default controller customization settings, it's quite flexible in what it can do and can even do gyro aiming so if you have literally anything besides XBox, there you go. One caveat is the Launcher menu itself. You technically can use the controller in it but it's easier to do mouse + you'll need to properly tab into Minecraft once Java loads.
I know it's not native support but it does 95% of the work for minimal computer knowledge.
I have a Steam Deck, so I’ll try binding the buttons, thanks for the tip!
Mouse and keyboard are much better and that's coming from someone that hates mouse and keyboard for games. I usually use a controller but Minecraft is extremely easy to learn with keyboard and mouse and you can't go back.
Its good for most when you learn it for sure. I went from 360 to PS4 to PC, and Ive not looked back since I fully learned keyboard. That said, it would really help for folks like my Fiance, who only have 3 fingers on their left hand, and ofc having a mod like controllable can lock him out of server play if the rest of the server isn't on it. That said, Im setting up DS4Windows whenever we finally replace his PC to help with that.
This right here. Some people rely on gamepad compatibility for accessibility reasons, and many might not have the technical know-how to set-up gamepad->kbm input mapping programs.
I don't think the hurdle is being able to figure out how mouse/keyboard works. Some people just want to lean back and relax while they play games, which a controller is much better suited for.
I have trouble with controllers for Minecraft. Prefer controllers in literally any game but minecraft feels impossible to use a controller with. The movements especially are very janky, even on console edition. But that's probably just me. I used to play on mobile controls for a long time but once I tried keyboard and mouse I literally could not go back. I've tried playing with mobile controls and I just can't
im glad that you prefer mouse and keyboard like most people but that doesnt mean everyone can.
Some people play games very differently, such as Minecraft on Steam Deck.
Wish they kept the old sounds for pistons but just made them quieter. The new sounds are bad and are unsatisfying especially when using them in doors.
I thought they were just gonna make current piston sound quieter not outright remove one of the most satisfying sounds in the game.
Monkey's Paw, "we"* technically got what "we"* wanted
\who was asking for any of this???)
there have been quite a few people saying pistons were too loud for a while now
I've never met them.
Hello! We have met now
Quick question then: was your issue the sound itself or just how loud it was?
Too loud. Not the worst case of a sound being too loud (minecarts take that cake off the top of my head), and this new sound is trash.
I'm at work, does anyone have a video/audio of the new piston sound?
Here you go. imho the new sound could use some rework...
I like my machines having machine sounds, this one feels weak ;-; i get ehy the change tho
This is cool but so random lol
I've heard some streamers saying that raid farms are going to be severely nerfed or done away with entirely, so I guess the witch change is partially to compensate for that.
Pistons, your guess is as good as mine!
Currently nerfed so much, you would probably get more redstone, with simple mining it.
I always end up with a double chest full of stacks of redstone after a bit of a diamond hunting session. And that's with constructing a few farms. I feel like gunpowder would have been a better buff because I'm too useless and scared to try a creeper farm
If you want to do any kind of autocrafting you will EAT redstone. My build has gone through 5 shulkers of red stone BLOCKS.
Lol, that's not "any kind" of auto crafting. That's a pretty extreme autocrafting setup if it requires 77000 redstone.
Yeah thats fair I never realized how much rs you need to make double chests of every rs component.
And they are destroying creeper farms in Bedrock if I remember correctly, by changing where on a block mobs spawn.
Destroying is a harsh term. High end mob farms are being broken/changed, but your generic scaffolding + water based ones will still function. It's bringing them closer to java farms anyway.
Oh no! Mining in Minecraft!
I've never met a community which so despises the core gameplay loop of the game it loves more than this one lol
Given how easy it is to farm Totems currently nerfs to raid farms are always a good thing
Normal raid farms are going to be even harder to automate after the patch, because you need to drink the potion each time.
Buffing witch drops is nice after the raid farm changes
omg what is the new piston sound please someone record it and share i cant test it for a while
or you could just wait for some YouTuber to post it idk nevermind, haven't seen one uploaded recently on YT.
ewwwwwwww whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Basically just imagine the sound of an android jacking off and you've got it.
yep i hate it a LOT
Witches now always drop 4-8 redstone dust on death This is to improve the viability of farms that utilize Witch Huts to obtain Redstone Dust
Were sorry we nerfed raid farms.
Honestly that's a fair trade. The only thing I was running the raid farm for was rs. I think ive gone through 5 boxes of blocks of it. I am already planning on building a witch farm in a perimeter so this is a nice buff.
All they need to do is keep the old Piston sound effect and just lower the volume and range
The sound effects have been the same for over 12 years since it was implemented, it should be considered an classic and shouldn't be changed. Same reason why the design of the new Diamond Ore texture looks pretty much the same as the old texture. Because it's iconic.
the new piston sounds sound wrong. It sounds like its made of plastic. I never heard anyone complain about them being to noisy.
Apparently they were mostly silent in community spaces but louder in places where Mojang recieve feedback.
The piston sound just doesn't do it for me.
Why can't they just add a volume slider for redstone components?
If anything, droppers and dispensers are way worse offenders than pistons. Pistons normally fire one, maybe twice, while the other two fire constantly in most contraptions.
That new sound is nauseating.
People complained about piston sounds? This new sound is just shit.
Jesus Christ the new piston sounds are awful, why didn’t they just reduce the volume of the old ones?
Let em cook
They did not cook with the new piston sound ;-;. I hope they revert it
They tried cooking but they left it in the oven too long.
Hakita cooking with 15d, Mojang def not with this one
emperor penguin seems to have given up, so that's good. And i agree, let all these devs cook this year is the year where games are being completed
The piston should revert to the old sound but should have its own slider in the sounds menu
Yay mojang is doing well!
Big fan of the witch change, I want more QOL buffs/changes like this.
Change it back change it back change it back change it back change it back change it back change it back change it back
*Barf* the piston sound is bad!
Piston sounds awful and no mace buffs, bad snapshot
I have a suggestion. The deep dark has already established that wool is a "quietening" material. So why not keep the piston sound as it is originally. But allow you to craft a Piston+Wool (or Sticky Piston + Wool) to make a "Quiet Piston"?
I saw pistons and crossed my fingers for MBE, but maybe another day 😔
Now do glowstone pls
Well, looks like it's time to add crafters to my witch farm
Anyone have any predictions for when 1.21 is gonna launch? It’s ready when it’s ready is the way to go but just curious since we’ve reached the bug fix part of the dev cycle if there’s a good guess based on previous releases
June based on previous years
Instead of lowering the piston sounds, they change it into "plap plap plap" which it sounds EVEN WORSE
i got idea how about they put it in settings for turn on/off piston sound tho
turn on use the old sound but turn off use the quiet one.
I hope this is a step in patching raid farms. The most broken thing in the game
they are already pretty much patched with the new changes to bad omen
Honestly I never found the piston sound really loud. Its a iconic sound, one of the more iconic sounds, and to be replaced with wet sounds of debatable origin feels really bad. If they dont change it, which I really hope they do since I havent seen anyone really liking this change, its another thing I’ll have to find a resource pack for when it is made (same as pack.png, I really hope that it can be modded back in)
What if sniffers could dig up redstone too? And flint and other random but useful things. Not glowstone dust though.

Mob farms are canon?!
I’m all for reworking the piston sounds but like why not keep it simple and just be able to put honeycomb or something on them to mute them?
The new piston sound needs a lot of work. I prefer the old one as of right now so hopefully they can find a good balance!
Yeah the new piston sounds... are not that good... Personally I like the classic piston sounds, they feel clunky and mechanical as a piston should be. The best fix IMO, suggested by a lot of people, would be adding a volume slider for mechanical blocks (pistons, dispensers, droppers, throw in the super noisy and annoying nether portals as well haha), as well as a slider for minecarts while you are at it
They feel like they could have just made the old piston sound quieter or at least chosen a more impactful Piston sound.
Please revert Mace changes from the previous snapshot.
Those changes are final bro, Mace is officially now a stillbirth
Balls
there are texture packs for sounds right?
Yes there are
nicee, gonna look for one that returns the piston sound then
I used one, to make the sound not so loud, without changing the actual sound.. Dont know, why Mojang didnt simple the same thing.. (was from vanillatweaks)
When was enchanted horse armor added?
Creative and Java only: https://minecraft.wiki/w/Horse_Armor#Enchanting
Ah ok! Thank you.
They should definitely change the piston sound to sound more, mechanical or metallic and not "sludgy". Its nice its quieter though.
Also while your changing loud in-game sounds, please change the Potion drinking sound effect. Its "sipping" sound if effect is obnoxious and one of the reasons I use splash potions instead. Make it more like the drinking honey bottle sound effect, its sounds like your actually gulping down liquid and its more quiet.
Also the ender dragon's roar, its nearly eardrum bursting if you turn up your volume to hear the music and it roars near you.
Witch change is an absolute banger, but the new piston noise is obnoxious in my opinion
For me the new Piston Sounds were a bit Clicky but I am sure I get used to it.
Thanks i hate it. The piston sounds are the absolute worst thing they couldve done. Will be using resource packs to revert it if they keep it
that witch drop change is grand!
I strongly hope Mojang reconsiders this new piston sound. I have Sensory Processing Disorder, and I find this new piston sound to be extremely overwhelming, especially in large machines. I had no issue with the previous piston sound, and unfortunately this new one is unpleasant in a way that would severely impact my enjoyment of the game. I understand the game cannot be designed around me, but I feel as though changing the sound may be a bit of an extreme solution. I know the previous one was often too loud for some players, perhaps a slider to reduce the volume of it in the settings could work to fix this problem?
I don't know how i fell about the piston sound
It is kind of wet
Like a salmon+
FIX THE PISTONS
will they fix entering the nether breaks the game?
When I download 24w20a, the piston sounds absolutely exactly the same? How?
Ok, so a simple passive witch farm in a spawn controlled area will probably produce about 3 stacks of redstone blocks per hour. I don’t have my notes in front of me, but I’m pretty sure that surpasses the rates of most existing raid farm designs. Wouldn’t be surprised to see that tweaked down a bit. Great change though!
Did they ever go back on changing the copper bulb? The decision to change that really didn’t make me feel good about any updates going forward
Is this the first change that was made intentionally to buff farms? I was under the impression that passive resource farms were not something that Mojang "officially supported" and that it was more of a natural evolution of some of the game's mechanics.
