I'm planning on dying in my house. If it reaches the point where I can't live alone or maybe with some at home care at most, I'm not sure how interested I'll be in staying around. People live too long sometimes.

I just hope when I’m an elder, assisted suicide is a more available options for us old farts who don’t wanna keep existing anymore

Thats why its so important to keep active, both physically and mentally. Yes, I am aware genetics plays a large factor in it, but you can control what you control.

The thought of future retirement costs makes the idea of financial stability feel like a distant dream for many.

My husband and I are looking into golden visas to potentially get cheaper healthcare in the future. We’re also doing everything we can now in our 30’s to give us more options down the line. We bought the cheapest house we could vs. the most expensive, we drive older paid off cars, etc. The money we do spend is often on outings with friends or vacations.

There’s no way I’m going into one of those. When the day comes I can’t look after myself then ship me off to dignitas. I’m done 

On the bright side, you might be dead before nursing home age results in exorbitant incurred costs.

I just hope that when that time comes, assisted suicide is more common, accessible, and accepted. 50 years from now much of the world is going to be uninhabitable anyway thanks to the climate crisis. And then the young ones at that time will ok boomer us millennials because we are offended that a bunch of kids sprayed orange powder on some stones.

Elder care depresses me too and unfortunately from what I've seen in my family, a lot of my relatives/grandparents lived/are living too long to the point of not being able to function independently. Even worse, both my grandmas have/had dementia so there is a strong possibility that I could develop that, too. With the exception of one of my grandparents (who died from lung cancer...even though he only smoked in his 20s-30s), all of my other grandparents were taken in by my aunts/uncles and needed full-time care.

I don't know about you, but I'd hate to be so feeble that I can't get out of bed and need to rely on others to feed me, bathe me, and change my diapers. At that point you're not living; you are merely surviving. All for $8-$10K a month and that doesn't even guarantee your caregivers will give a shit about you. Someone tell me, what kind of a life is that?! Ideally I'd love to live to old age where I could still be independent and die in my sleep but given what has happened with my elder relatives, I'm worried that I'll be fending for my life somewhere in the street, old and crazy. I'm hoping by the time I am close to losing my facilities I can at least opt to have physician assisted euthanasia.

A long walk in the woods and a bullet for me is my retirement plan.

I feel the same. I have no kids as well, both by choice & partly because I have fertility issues (dealing with that costs mega $$$)… I worry about my husband & I as we are both only children. At 39 & 37 we have already had to take care of our parents & have them live with us… Yeah. I’m scared. The physical part of aging isn’t even my biggest worry, it’s how I will survive & have some quality of life…

I wouldn't mind being one of those people who retired on a low-end cruise ship. They all have morgues and medical facilities onboard and it sounds better than a retirement home or assisted living facility. Plus rewards perks.

I could choose to book an excursion if I wanted to or sit on the deck getting my skin all leathery. Stay in and watch TV or go to the Lido deck and watch whatever new movies they have there. Housekeeping is included so I wouldn't have to worry about cleaning. Meet interesting people or read a book alone on a sun chair. Get drunk off my ass or stay in and drink chamomile. Play bingo or watch a comedy show. Go do some international waters gambling or take advantage of the onboard library most cruise ships have. I dunno, doesn't sound like a bad way to spend the rest of my years.

Ran some numbers and variables through ChatGPT and it estimated an annual of $43,800 (it was originally a bit cheaper in the $30ks, but one of the variables I set was a balcony room with an obscured view). And that's excluding extras like things that usually cost money on a cruise ship, just base living on a cruise ship. Certainly better than $10k/month.

Right now, I couldn't afford to do so. But I have plans.

It’s going to be worse for us because people keep allowing a very strident minority of people to roll back social safety nets and programs. Millennials and GenZ are too caught up in just surviving today to realize that tomorrow will be even worse.

My grandparents are trying to move into assisted living apartments and they're charging between 350k to 500k up-front "deposit" plus like 3k-5k per month. With waitlists. Constant battle of preventing all of your money getting drained by investment firms at every stage of your life.

I’m staying as physically and mentally healthy as possible. When I run out of savings or health, I’ll have the bullet.

If there is anything my broken ankle has taught me, it's that I detest relying on others. It's been a real mental blow having to be cared for instead of doing the caring myself. My independence is a core part of my personality. I don't want to imagine a world where I cannot do for myself permanently. We gotta do what we can to remain healthy as long as we are alive because both the cost and the reality of living in a nursing home is fucking depressing.

I honestly hope to die at home one day and will hold out living independently as long as possible.

I think quality of life in old age depends on a lot of things. My parents are in their 70s and have good lives - they travel, my dad still works (we’re trying to convince him to retire) and my mom won an award for her art. I hope I can be like them. They also bought long term care insurance so they can have a health aid to help them at home when needed. They’re my ideal - I love visiting them. I probably won’t be that fit though - I’m also hoping that by the time I’m that age there will be AI home assistants who can call 911 if I fall or something, and that assisted suicide is an available option.

I had a friend tell me once about the 5 blessings in Korea: longevity, health, wealth, virtue and the last one I love so much- a good death. As an ICU nurse, I’ve witnessed a lot of death, rarely is it “good”. I think about that a lot. I’m aiming for quality years, not quantity.

I feel like I should be scared stupid about how I will survive in retirement, but I'm too busy trying to survive now.

My dad was just diagnosed with cancer two months before retiring. My mom's ss isn't enough to cover a third of the mortgage, much less any other expenses to simply exist. I'm living at home because I can't afford not to, and now I've become a caretaker overnight. I wish I could say I was in a better place financially so that I can take care of my family, but the reality is that my college degree is useless, and I'm stuck working in food service.

If I could do it all over again, I would crush my childhood dreams and tell kid me that everything about prosperity and the American Dream is one big, fat lie.

This is all coming from someone who, up until recently, believed that things would eventually work out.

I injured my back when I was 26. I’m 39 and I’ve had 7 back surgeries in my lower back. My last surgery was 2019 and this is the longest I’ve done without surgery since I was first injured. I had a lumbar fusion and I’ve been trying to stay active and healthy. I’ve gone to physical therapy to strengthen my core muscles, I make sure I’m doing my stretches, getting in my daily exercise and I have noticed a huge difference when I eat a clean diet. I cut out processed foods and it’s made a world of difference. When I have had junk here and there I felt like crap and I was in so much pain. When I eat clean, Whole Foods I don’t even need to take any pain meds which is amazing.

I managed to get my husband (40) on the health conscious train. He used to eat really crappy foods and 3 mountain dews a day. Never drank water. His dad has diabetes and has a lot of extra weight in his mid section and he noticed how hard it is for his dad to get around because of his knees. Same thing with a neighbor. My husband realized he didn’t want that to be him at that age. He’s changed his diet and we have a home gym now at our new house.

I know I won’t be able to be independent forever. But I want to manage as long as I can. I do have 2 kids but I won’t let them take care of me. I helped take care of my grandma when she could no longer physically do so and it only got worse once the dementia started. It is very draining mentally and physically. I’d rather go to another country that has assisted death and go out while I’m still myself and in my right mind.

We have to commune. Maybe buy a house with 4 friends and split the mortgage and bills until the end. I think it’s the only way

Long term care insurance mostly and Medicaid. I've seen many a rich client bypass resource rules to be eligible for Medicaid.

Um super depressing. Hundreds of thousands if not millions of elderly people will be homeless or burdening the hell out of family because so many don’t have a pension to keep them afloat like our grandparents generation had. My mothers parents were so lucky that my grandfather was a WW2 vet because they had like 150k from the sale of their home to their name and no $ saved. He got into what I’d consider a nice middle class nursing home for him and my grandmother for either free or very very low cost solely because he was a WW2 vet. For those who are super politically active, lobby the F out of our fed govt to make sure people have decent living conditions when they’re too old to work because so many ppl are going to be screwed. Yea, it’s depressing af.

Most of our parents were financially reckless and are suffering now due to those poor financial decisions. Most of us watch them suffer and are making the same foolish financial mistakes 😂😂😂

Get long term care insurance for your parents, and buy it for yourself when you approach retirement age. Many long term care insurance plans offer in-home care options.

My father was in care at the hospital for 5 long years. He had dementia and was 92. It sucked

Both of my parents are going to have to give up their homes if they need to be in a nursing facility. It’s fucked up. Nursing homes can and will take EVERYTHING if you need to go to one and move you to a state facility when you run out of money

Eh, I'll just wander into the woods when the time comes and let nature take its course. I don't see the point of clinging to life just for the sake of squeezing out a few more years if I can't take care of myself.

I think the right to die movement is going to see a lot of attention in the next few decades.

I don't care living past my 50s, hopefully my slightly overactive heart gives out so I don't have to off myself by then, being a geriatric indentured servant don't appeal to me. I'm gonna try and enjoy my last 2 decades here.

So… I have two theories about what could happen here: 1) climate change kills most of us off. 2) we don’t go down the road of christofascism and a bunch of us get into power over the next 10-15 years as the boomers finally die off. Once we are in power, we actually start passing legislation that helps people.

Don’t worry. Construction right now is insane to meet this demand. Boomers are eating them up. The thing about these places is that you check in until you check out. At that point we will have our pick of the litter. Just eat your wheaties and stay healthy until then.

I'm still convinced assisted suicide is going to become the norm for us. Work as long as we can, enjoy some things we like as long as we can, and then peace out. Really all we need to do is not be as corrupt as the generations before us and make a better world for people. We're getting boned by politicians and corporations but I have hope that things will get better.

Without some sort of automation robotics efficiencies will there be enough healthcare available for our large aging demographic without (like housing) turning it into another predatory demand-based capitalistic system.

I'll do everything I can to avoid the home. My lawyer will be instructed to donate my belongings to charity if they put me there.

I have no issue with dying a few years sooner because I don’t want to pay for that and won’t choose to get much medical care for many conditions past 75

The rich are getting richer faster then ever and ordinary people can't afford regular life or to have kids. Just enough to get by and not enough to prosper. Easier to control that way. Don't think too much about the paper you work for, because then you might just realize that it is all built on a Ponzi scheme (similar). Money printed freely without a cost to the printer, then given to banks for little to no cost, then the banks make 10 dollars for every 1 printed. A scheme to rob the future for the sake of the present. Well we were the future and we got robbed. Don't blame your boomer family member though because they have about as much choice in the matter as you do. It's going to keep getting worse and shows no sign of changing. If I can't take care of myself, I don't want to live somewhere where I'm practically helpless. I'll probably deposit some lead into my brain and fall into the ocean or something. I'm perfectly okay with that.

What kind of pension fund benefits does your employer offer? Because if you can get a nice pension out of your salary and save up some money, you could always retire in a place with lower cost of living. Or maybe even in another country.

Well, make sure you are investing heavily in addition to, make sure you have a incredibly healthy diet and work out vigorously at least three if not, five times a week to help cut down on potential health issues later on in life, thereby saving you money in the sick care system

I expect to live alone in my apartment during my twilight years, with my cat(s). And then be found dead of a heart attack... eventually... which is what happened to my uncle.

I don't see the point of a facility for the elderly. But then again, I'm Latino and we don't normally send our old to homes.

Life goals is me affording to live in assisted living and not have to rely on my kids but seems unlikely.

I'm really hoping that with advancements in AI and robotics that we'll have robotic caretakers.

I try not to think about it. I have a few friends in my doll club that are in their 90’s. My last living grandparent just turned 92. I have Cerebral Palsy and was supposed to be gone before 40. 🤷‍♀️ I’ll probably choke to death on broccoli when I’m old. Trying to eat better and use my gym more often. I’m 172 pounds now and I miss being 135. Smaller wheelchair is what I’m working towards and working on being able to keep crutching it because ramps are not everywhere. Although I hope that’s the future. I love ramp access.

The depressing thing to me is that anyone wants to be living in a nursing home when they are too old to function on their own where all they do is reminisce about their lives and slowly die...

I'll live in my house until I fall over and die. I don't want to be in a nursing home decaying in a chair. Maybe I'll go sky diving one last time and forget my parachute.

A nursing home isn't someplace I will ever volunteer to be. I own a home, I'll live here until I'm not sane enough to know better. If I'm insane I won't know or care where I am.

My dad has had one for decades. Apparently, he got a really good one and never let it lapse. It pays like 500/day up to 1m over his life. It gives me peace of mind knowing that even if he needs it, he'll be able to get the care he deserves.

He's told me those plans don't exist anymore, at least not in the sense that they are really good.

The boomers are taking up most of our nursing homes, by the time you need it, thier would be ample supply. And you'll probably have a much better quality of life when you hit boomer age.

So thier are some things to look forward too, just remember, the people you treat like shit today, might just be in charge of looking after your welfare when your locked in a nursing home.

The system now was set up for many elderly who have now passed away (like my grandparents). When private company pensions were still a thing and they could live comfy in retirement. Those days are gone.

The transition is happening now, elder boomers are entering them with their retirement fund (ie 401ks etc) money but many don’t have those types of funds either (like my mom, a baby boomer/on the gen c line). Millennials have even less wealth so it’s understandable we won’t have those funds either. I don’t worry about it too much though. I’ll end up dead at the end either way.

My dad and stepmom took care of my grandparents in their old age. Moved in with them. My dad says it was the best thing he ever did and he’s so grateful he had that time with them at the end of their lives. Maybe my kids will love me enough to do that, maybe not.

I don't have any savings, unless you count the cans under my sink, but I also don't have a healthy sense of self preservation. So I've always just kinda planned on ketting an accident or untreated illness take me out first.
