The Mandarin in Tokyo holds a special place in my heart as I stayed there on my first trip to Japan when they had just opened many years ago. That said, it’s quite dated now and you can do better. The Aman isn’t much more expensive but genuinely one of my favorite city hotels in the entire world.
Japan is a safe place to travel alone, although I am a man and cannot speak on the experience for women. There is undeniably an unhealthy culture towards women but if you compare Japan to most other countries on earth, it’s still safe for women.
I’ll be going later this year to coincide with the Noma Kyoto opening and I will be staying in Tokyo and Kyoto at the Aman hotels in both cities. I go to Japan quite frequently and have been many times, so I can tell you that you’ll enjoy yourself especially if you enjoy luxury travel. If our schedules line up, maybe I’ll see you there.
I agree mandarin oriental is dated but aman isn’t just a little more it’s at least 2-3x more if we are comparing the entry level room which I feel puts aman in another category. I recommend FS otemachi which is in the same price range as mandarin oriental but much newer and a great hotel.
FS Otemachi looks gorgeous and I love the bar there. Great call.
Last time I was in Tokyo, in Nov 2023, Aman was $1700 for a night while Mandarin was $1200 but maybe that was just a unique time. Aman keeps jacking up their prices but I feel like most hotels are doing so as well.
It could have been when I was looking too but I agree if those prices definitely worth the upgrade to Aman.
