I work at my own business, so getting caught isn't a problem. But during tourist season I'm often stuck up front helping people and in between I don't have much to do so a game would keep me occupied. I've been playing slay the spire, and last year I played pokemon tcg on my phone.
Anyone have any games that you can play mostly with a mouse, and preferably turn based so if something comes up I can pause the game no problem.

I can't really tell, because I'm not very knowledgeable in this field. I don't think any Civ game is very demanding when it comes to hardware, but I'm not sure. You could check the specs for Civ 5 and 6 and see if your laptop fits those. Otherwise you could play one of the older games in the series. You'll probably find one that your laptop can handle. But I don't know how the older Civ games have aged. I started with Civ 5 and never played the older games.

I think civ is CPU heavy so that's probably more important than the GPU
You should try Civ III then, it's still crazy good and uses such little resources you could play it by email...literly email.

Civ 3 and 4 are still excellent games, especially 4. They should both be fairly cheap (3 might even be free / abandonware).

I know I'm 3 days too late. Civ 5 used to run on my old janky ass laptop up until the late rounds. If the game doesn't run very well then check out unciv. It's open source and will be 100x easier to run
You can play civ 6 on basicslly anything civ 5 is good as well
Civil 3 for sure, cause it was built for 98, 2000, ME, and XP. Map is 2D isometric and graphics are solid for what they are. Very little effort on a low end device. And get it from GOG to keep the overhead to a minimum (Steam runs through their launcher and that can be pretty hefty sometimes)
Depends on how low we're talking bud. If it's a fairly modern laptop with an APU( Intel iris or ryzen 1st or 2nd gen) you can run a couple of games on low settings.
Warhammer Mechanicus or The Last Spell are two turn based games that can run well on low settings

Oh, ur on the right track w StS. Definitely a thinking game so I don't look like a zombie blasting thru Vampire Survivors.
I've also been plating Wyldermth. It's like a rougelike table top with a really interesting combat system and companions with developing stories. So roguelike BG3 with comic story telling. Every run is different but feels like a solid campaign rather than a run.
The characters look more generic (random generator) so I put my IRL friends names as the companions and it was really funny.
Also Streets of Rogue is another good one its like a roguelike GTA

Yeah my company allows a certain number of WFH days a year. I take them on days when I know I have nothing going on, then play games while monitoring emails/chat and jiggling my mouse

I work from home in IT on the weekend. So my schedule is Saturday - Tuesday. Monday and Tuesday are no good, but Saturday and Sunday I spend most of the day either playing or watching something. Calls are infrequent (and I’m not alone so I trade those off with my weekend partner) so I just have to keep an eye on alerts to make sure a client hasn’t gone offline.
My buddy was a security guard for a gated community during graveyard shift. As long as he watched the gate, did a walk around every 2 hours and didn't fall asleep he could play whatever he wanted. Guy had his PS4 in the booth and would play games all night.
IT and do it while installing/updating machines and just waiting. Has to be something I can pause any second though.

Sometimes, where I work is too busy to be playing, but other times, we're slow as hell and have tons of downtime.
Also, I work at a global conglomerate with a shit ton of employees, so there's constantly townhall and other similar type meetings online. So I just put on one side of my headphones and play my games. I'm still paying attention to what's being said as well so I'm still doing what I'm supposed to be doing.

I work from home so I have greater options. My greatest success was actually Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. I got a PS Portal and would do side quests and open world stuff at work, then do big story stuff on the TV at night. Yakuza has a similar rhythm so that would also be a good option.
For Switch I’ve been playing The World Ends With You Final Remix. Not turn based but the touch focused controls make it easy to put up and put down. Plus with the Switch if you put it in Sleep Mode the game is paused no matter what.
We play this game where we hold our hand out and try to get each other to look at it. 👌 like that, but upside down. On break, I scroll reddit. I used to play tetris on my phone but the ads got to be too much for me so I uninstalled it.

I work nights and MOSTLY consists of watching people sleep. I play anything that runs on my work laptop. Most recently I've been playing guild wars 2 and it works pretty well since if something comes up its usually not a big deal if I go afk. Before that I was replaying the dragon ages and a couple of emulators. Worst habit haha now I cant find the motivation to find a day shift job 😅

I play on my SteamDeck at work but there's a few good games that are great for just pausing when I need to get back to work.
Siralim Ultimate, got this off the recent Dungeon Crawler Humble Bundle. It's like Pokémon, but instead of capturing your creatures you summon them from their essence after you kill enough of them. Loads to tweak and do with your party. Great turned based combat. Easy to stop and go play at work.
Symphony of War. It's a Turned Based Strategy RPG that I'd say is like Final Fantasy Tactics and Advanced Wars were merged into one game. Very fun and easy to pause or save and stop when you need too.
Both are pretty low resource too so should run on older work computers.
You can put Pokémon Insurgent on a flash drive and never have to worry about anything since the save file would be there too. After playing all of pokemon Gen 1, 2 & 3 I got into the fan made games. Honestly wonderful experiences and are a lot more difficult than normal ones.

I haven’t played anything at work recently because I’m mostly studying and shit, but dead cells is pretty good. I’d imagine vampire survivors is a good one as well, but I don’t have it on a handheld.

When I am on my break, I play a little bit of dredge or do a quick game of some shooter.
Paradox games. A single playthrough takes multiple days at a minimum. They're essentially a pauseable auto-turnbased game.
Baba Is You. Puzzle game, essentially turn based. Can get on phone or PC. Lots of thnking, and no need to pause.
Poly Bridge. If you like physics and creating things. On phone and PC. Again lots of thinking, and no need to pause.
Pokemon mainline games. Clicker/idle games.
I play work hard so my kids can go to college.

When i'm working from home i play Farming Simulator 23 on my phone with a controller. Its not the greatest game ever made but its fun, pretty chill and doesn't require my full attention if I get a call.
I will also sometimes play Scythe Digital on my phone. Its a digital version of the board game. I'll even play that one in the office sometimes. Its turn based so again it doesn't require much babysitting when actual work needs doing.
In case you're wondering, I'm a network engineer for an ISP. Some days its a lot of waiting around for something to break, particularly on weekends. Other days there's lots of busywork to do so not much downtime.
Fuck must be nice to play games at work. I have zero downtime at work, I work in a very customer facing setting, and most of the time I’m working with two people, and as soon as i finish one, I’m literally starting another.
I WFH so whenever I have downtime, I just play my PS5 and what current game I am playing. My portal helps a lot too if I am traveling.
Royal Match (which I’ve been told is similar to Candy Crush, but I’ve never played it) is my addiction. Easy to play for a few minutes and put away.

Bloons td6 is one i enjoy. Literally just drag & drop monkeys and let the game play itself. Good to play unnoticed.
Another one is Ring of Pain. It’s a roguelike with little cards. Enemies, loot, power ups, and the exit are cards organized in ring shape. All you have to do is click “attack” to one of the two cards in front of you, or move to any side (rotate the ring). Pretty simple gameplay, but you need to carefully manage your stats and what pieces of loot you grab (you can’t take everything, it’s classified into helmets, weapons, chestplates, shoes, etc and you can only have one of each at a time). Pretty fun when i have to pretend to be doing something more useful
I finished maxing in osrs playing on mobile at my last job
Ascension. A lot of Ascension. Terraforming Mars when I've really got time to kill. Risk, Tokkaido, or even Talisman when the mood strikes. These are all via app, against AI opponents, obviously.
However, at my old job, I was able to play in person when we had an overlapping client gap. We did a lot of Bananagrams, Qwirkle, Carcassonne, and NMBR8.
I work from home, so two screens are dedicated to spreadsheets. The other tends to run something turn-based so I can manage the game when I have a moment to spare. Civilization VI is a good one, Battletech is a favorite, Lords of Waterdeep, etc.
At work I don't game anymore, too complicated of a job now but I used to play Pokemon Go with my manager back when I worked in retail. However I have considered playing Planetarion again, as it was a game my high school used to play (went to a tech high school so long ago that it was rare for computers to be in each class).

I enjoyed playing Cities Skylines to the same effect (the first one, don't touch the second one). Bonus is you can do some city work and then just let it run and generate money for you while you do IRL work
In a similar vein to StS: monster hunter is another fun card based rogue like. And Balatro is also super fun.
And maybe long term management style games like rimworld, civ, or Tropico since you can pause them whenever and play for an infinite amount of time
I did a lot of Dave the Diver because it's long enough, fun and interesting and I can pause it anytime I needed too.

I work in a supermarket, so I usually play "hide the expired meat". Sometimes, it can be weeks until people find it.
I also play "sneak the condoms" in old people's trollies/baskets.
Pallet truck races are another fave.
And if a customer is rude, I enjoy playing "squish the veg/bread" or "hide the security tag".

But when I have to actually work I play civilization, ff14, n64, monster hunter rise since you can pause while fighting, mostly games like that where you can pause. I finished divinity original sin ee so I will soon start playing dos 2.
Dicey Dungeons is another turn-based rouge-like that only uses a mouse. Pretty similar to sts but uses dice rolls/luck as it’s core gameplay mechanic
Chess is always great. LiChess has great learning tools and puzzles if you don't know how to play.
A good mobile game, if you don't mind spending like 8 bucks (I think that's what it was) to get rid of ads is Mob Control. Plenty of people do play with the ad version but if it's a game you intend on playing, it's absolutely worth it to remove the ads. It can sometimes feel a little repetitive, but there's always competitions to participate in and a lot of achievements to unlock and upgrade.

I usually play things that are pausable, or games I don't care if I die or can't pause. For instance, a strategy game of some kind where you can pause or turn away from and not much happens. Manor lords, total war, crusader kings, Stellaris, dawn of War, starcraft, ect. First person shooters because pause. Doom, hedon blood rite, titanfall, halo, bioshock. Dark messiah might and magic, thief. Third person games. Dead space. Assassins creed, mass effect. Or multi-player games like war thunder, where, unless you've got a booster, who cares if you die?

Stellaris and galactic civilizations are great for this. Also consider city builders if you've never given a try. Pausing is a mechanic by default in city builders.

Work in an office. Into the Breach and Rimworld are both great just because you can pause and save at any point, don’t really require fast reflexes so it can be played on a remote desktop if you are unable to install stuff on your work PC, and can be played with exclusively a mouse so it’s easy to be real subtle.
