Where in CO can I do donuts in the snow with the least chance of getting in trouble with cops?

Probably not what you are looking for, but there's a "winter driving school" in Breckenridge that gives you high end cars and an awesome offroad course to do a lot more than just doing donuts in the snow. We did this as a team building activity a few years ago, and it was awesome (for as much as I usually hate teambuilding activities).

Just find a big ass parking lot

Empty lot. Just have the "I'm not very good on the snow, so I wanted to practice driving where it's safe" excuse in the chamber. I'd be surprised if they bothered at all.

Find a big ol' parking lot. But make sure you scope it out when there is no snow to ensure there aren't concrete blocks/bumpers in front of the parking spots. Likely won't be, but don't want to find them the hard way if they're buried in snow in the lot you choose

Last time it snowed i wanted to test out some new tires so i went to an abandoned hobby lobby parking lot for some donuts and a cop did drive by so i stopped for a second. then he flashed his brights at me so i flashed back and kept going. not sure what any of this meant but i have never heard of cops issuing tickets for it. is that new?

I was doing exactly this in a parking lot off the south end of Cherry Creek dam when some idiot Greenwood Village cop showed up. And wrote me a ticket. What a goddamn prick. Went to court (this was a long time ago when you could still do that with minor traffic tickets), and the assistant city atty actually dropped it when I explained what was going on. Miracles do happen sometimes.

Ice racing in Georgetown is a MUST. Get some snow tires and go out there for some fun. You don’t even need to officially race.

Parents would take their kids to the local high school parking lot and have them practice snow driving, including turns and donuts. Though that's when the parking lot is abandoned. I guess you could try that and they might just assume you're a parent helping your kids navigate snow.

Otherwise, there aren't many places you can go where you'll be assured no one will call.

I saw some one doing donuts in the parking lot at Lowe’s on Sunday. At 9:30am. There was no snow and the cops never came. So Lowes.

I'm actually in the same boat - came here from FL and wanting to feel out handling ice more.

I'm not sure when they "open" it, but I've been hearing that at some point, cars are allowed on Georgetown Lake. I'm 15 minutes away from it and keep meaning to find out if just anyone can try it out.

I took my daughter into a new subdivision that had roads signs, but no houses built yet. Great course. I pulled the e-break a couple of times to simulate hitting ice. No cops bothered us, but we also weren’t being fools.

I wouldn't worry too much about it because I haven't seen police officers enforcing much of anything anyway.

Don't listen to any of the responses here saying it's not a big deal, private property, etc. In Colorado reckless driving applies to public and private property. If you talk to enough people, you will hear the stories of power tripping DPD officers charging people for this kind of thing, especially if you're not willing to really lick their boots when they catch you. Maybe look for a place with a skid plate or some kind of insurance/allowance to motorsports activity.

At Ruby Hill where the bike park parking is at is where I usually do them. Nice asphalt, curb only on one side of the parking area.

We had a 7th grader get pulled over for driving on i70. Couldn’t present a license so the cop gave him a driving without ID ticket and sent him on his way. I doubt the cops would do anything or care if they saw you in a lot.

Go to the horse racing track in Aurora. Nobody goes out there, and it has a massive parking lot. It’s my go-to easy dark sky area for Star-gazing.

one of the many defunct\empty parking lots that used to be a grocery store. Make sure you know if there are any parking block things (cant think of the name) so you don't ruin your day. I've done that with my truck for my kid and I've had cops give me a thumbs up before... I've never been harassed about it when there is no one else around.

Mall or church parking lots are easy choices at night or when nobody is around. I’ve been confronted by cops for similar stuff and got off if I was being respectful of the location and explain that I was trying to intentionally not be stupid on public roads.

I did a few at the Speer and Lawrence intersection without an issue around this time last year. Fr though big parking lot, more suburban than downtown and odds are you’re more than okay

Theres a bunch of up and coming warehouses out in the airport area, that and regular donuts happen all the time, weve been robbed a few times as well. Higher ups hate it, but nothing can really be done and they dont realize its not as nice of an area as they think.

There's a parking lot off 6th Ave and Kipling next to the Jefferson stadium in Lakewood. Huge lot, no cars in the lot. You can go there. You can't miss it it's a huge lot.

Honestly if you aren't a teenager acting like an idiot a cop likely won't care. Pick any empty lot and you'll be fine. I've taught several out of towners this way and have never been hassled. The key is it has to be an empty lot where you aren't putting anyone else at risk.

Do it about 3 in the AM when there's no one around. We used to do it in high school parking lots. Make sure the snow is heavy and packed down for better results...

This is more or less how I learned snow driving -- mom took me out to an abandoned parking lot (the old Walmart in Lafayette) and we just messed around with sliding, stopping, turning etc.

There are driving schools that offer skid courses. That's about as good as you're going to get unless you know someone with property and is willing to let you drive on their land.

I found an empty school lot when I first moved here and took my car out for a spin. My traction control was useless but it did detour me from wanting to drive that car in the snow lol

There's a big lot by where the train tracks cross kalamath by 25 and Alameda, it's a empty space between kalamath and Santa Fe. There's like nothing there. I've gone there with my friends a couple times before in the middle of the weekday and hooned around in the snow, no problems but really anywhere is going to be dependent of right place right time. A cop could drive down any street whenever really.
