I'd like to know if the other competitor didn't have to reset. Because if he had a clean run I'd have given it to him instead, coz then his bot would have successes in the task on its own without intervention.
If you look closely you can see there are several checkpoints. Her intervention is 100% part of the rules, which seem to account for degrees of inaccuracy.

It’s not about following every line it’s about designing a robot that can figure out how to choose the correct path and get there the fastest. Veritasium made a video about a similar competition. Very interesting stuff. But they have specific rules. I imagine it’s quite difficult to keep the robot in the path and maintain great speed. Therefore they allow a reset at a checkpoint.

As someone that's done line following robots (First Lego League, robotics contest for middle schoolers) I gotta say that's not as fun to watch, you want people to push the limits of speed and reliability and a checkpoint system like this is a good way to encourage that with a built in time penalty rather than an outright failure.
If you hear the referees, you'll hear them say, "checkpoint satu, checkpoint dua, checkpoint tiga, finish". (one two and three in Malay). The one in focus has the referee saying "reset" when the car went haywire.
The other side reached checkpoint satu a bit later than the one we're seeing, even including the reset. So yeah, a lot can be implied on what's happening on the other side.

They're given some time in the start for this. However, the robot must traverse & scan the map itself, you can't click a picture and feed it in.
Why is there a line running to the finish from north, but both robots avoid the finish? Are they smart enough to know that there’s more lines they gotta follow?
Very interesting observation. They are following more lines since they must cross all checkpoints before finishing the race. They're smart enough to follow more lines just for these checkpoints, if that didn't matter they would've gone straight to finish.
Indeed at 00:28 you can see him pass a thin line which is (presumably) checkpoint 3. The robot will likely remember the shortest path, known to him, after a previous scan. Other than that it's all autonomous

The checkpoints have a thin strip of paper which reflect light a little differently, that's how the robot knows it has crossed one. And crossing all checkpoints? That depends on how well you design the algorithm and that's exactly what this competition is about.

I might be wrong, but I think it's automatic. I think part of the competition is writing a maze finding algorithm that is more efficient than the other car. Could be wrong it might be manual but I think it's automatic.

Humans have different programming that result in too much of a variable in efficiencies based on different tracks and variations. The idea of this game is to find the program that would be most efficient no matter the course, so it will figure out the best overall strategy to use no matter the variables.
It's basically game theory.

If im not mistaken this is the Robocup junior world competition so you can basicly come with anything u make. I have seen every posible combo from arduino to homemade circuit boards. But i havent been competing for a few years now so idk if the rules changed

There’s a part on the bottom of the vehicle that has 3 or more (likely more in this case) UV light sensors surrounding a uv light emitter. One in the center and then one or more on either side. The amount of light reflected into each sensor at any given time can be used to calculate the position of the line and control the wheels accordingly. (Black line = less UV received in a sensor. If the sensor on the right gets a ton and the sensor on the left hardly gets any, the line is on the left and the vehicle turns in that direction). I’m going into my fifth and final year of my mechatronics engineering degree and had to do roughly the same thing for a project a year ago and again 3 years ago, albeit at a much less impressive speed. The first time was with a premade module and the second time was with a module I built myself

I used to have a little setup with a couple of IR-reflective sensors and motordrivers that could be put on a Lego Technic frame... Wasn't as fast, nor accurate, but seeing things makes me wonder if I still have the PCB's after so many years and moving house at least 5 times. My 6 y/o son might really enjoy building such a robot...
