How do you plan a backpacking trip with a dog? What is something you have to research first?
Thankfully I live in an area where I don't have this issue. You can just research if they are allowed wherever you go. So ultimately, national parks are definitely out. If they are allowed, then that's all you need to know.
how do you plan ANY trip with a dog?
then go from there . . .
Tip. Toughen their feet. Consider booties. Keep their load relatively light. Put a waterproof capsule on the collar with contact info..,dogs do get lost. Teach recall, reinforce constantly.
There’s tons more…Google knows all
Start with doing overnight camps with your tent in your backyard (or a friends) to get your dog accustomed to it. see how your dog reacts to being in a tent when your nearby somewhere safe vs the first night out in the middle of nowhere.
Give lots of treats to make it a good experience.
How will you sleep? How will it eat? Who carries its food? How will you get it enough water (ironically, harder than dealing with the good)? Are dogs allowed where you want to go?
I’m in the Sierras. I focus on making sure that we have enough streams that we’ll be passing to make sure they get enough water. If not, I’ll need to pack the water. You obviously need to carry enough food. Keep in mind your dog may be working more than normal, so a little extra food may be warranted. Lastly, some years there is a red algae in the Sierras that can be lethal for dogs. I ensure where I am going is not having an outbreak. Other than that, they are amazing backpacking companions.
I would make sure to adjust my expectations when it comes to distance covered. When I first started taking my Pyr for walks her average was about 2 miles. She can do 6 now. My pit bull will just power through anything - it all depends on a dog. Make sure the trail allows pets. I would get a harness that clips to your chest so you can travel hands free. It may take some getting used to so use it a few times before you take it on trail. Consider sleeping arrangements, food weight and emergency supplies. Can you get your dog to safety if they get hurt? Is the area tick dense? All things to consider. ;) Have fun !
