I wanted to adopt him so bad.
This was a Petland store in Texas.
Oh so you don't mean adopt him, you mean buy him with a warranty. Best to stick to shelters and get one at a Clear the Shelter day for $25.
Yeah, you're right. I guess it's a little disingenuous to put a sign out that say "adopt me" then. Also, in many shelters they often wave the fees due to over capacity.
It’s better that you don’t, then.
They have Petland in Texas? I thought it was a Canadian chain.
They're cute but pet store dogs that are for sale are guaranteed to be bred by unethical breeding practices and have a high chance of being inbred. When you buy them it just dooms another dozen or so. Adopt don't shop. Mutts are way healthier and no one needs a pure bred companion dog. ;D
All of the pet stores near me don't sell cats or dogs but will have them brought in by local shelters for the day to try to get them adopted
All the pet stores here feature shelter animals (people protest if they try to sell puppies) so it’s changed a lot in the last 15 years, which is nice.
Oh I didn't know this. I most likely am going to adopt from a shelter though when I can (when I have a house).
I used to work at one and seeing all the animals and the conditions alot of them are brought in originally, it feels wrong to ignore them. Especially the older ones.
Yes it feels wrong, it's a very shitty situation all around. Many cities have outlawed cat/dog sales for this reason, but not enough.
Petfinder.com is a great resource to search your area for rescue animals. You can filter by breed, age, size, distance, etc. and theyre all rescues, and will typically be around $200-400 as opposed to $1k+. Bookmark it for when you're ready!
Pet finder is great, and so is Adopt-a-pet. Much harder to type out, though, lol
I found my best girl on adopt a pet. She had to be helped over the rainbow bridge last month but when I am ready for another dog I definitely am going through the app again. Right now I would love to have another dog but I am not in a great financial situation, I miss having a pet. She was my first dog, I always had cats. Love both but she was my meant to be dog.
I've had my dog long enough to know I'll have a big empty space in my life when she's gone. Sorry for your loss.
I found my kitty girl in the pet store, put in there by a local rescue. I applied online at the rescue. I did a Petfinder search and found her there too. But they took her down because she was adopted. By Me!!! :D
Bawww I love it! Yes some stores like Petco and PetSmart work through local adoption agencies (I've worked at both) but stores like Petland are the bad ones. Some people don't know the difference, but these "for sale" puppies live at the store, don't get walked or socialized, are products of puppy mills, and cost thousands of dollars.
Found a couple of mine through Petfinder. There is definitely vetting that needs to be done by BOTH parties, though. Ask the questions important to you, even if you think they might be inferred... just to make sure you're getting what you expect. Huge advantage that many come from in home rescues/fosters, so they're 'home tested'. I had a lady try to tell me a cat was good with other animals... but through a chicken wire screen door inside the house. Because that's normal. And that the cat had been returned 3 times, including by a vet 'but she was obviously a bad vet'. Listen to that Spidey-sense.
My dad bought a German Shepherd and aside from being the biggest baby he's also got a lot of health issues, having a hard time walking lately as he's getting older, problems with his hips, poor guy. My sister ended up leaving her dog with my dad also, he's a mutt I found, I had seen him many times with two other pups(I so wish I could have taken all of them in) in an area that no one knew whose they were or where they came from so probably dropped off, he was pretty small but man did he get huge, he is an absolute Tank and the bestest dog, he is nearly the same age as the Shep but still seems so much healthier. He also has an uncanny sense of when I am sad and will come put his head on my shoulder while I sit... Oh and he dances, his front paws tippy tapping when he's excited. Mutts for the win.
I know that tippy tap sound! I can practically see your pupper doing the dance! Lol
Puppy mills are terrible.
So many dogs that need homes and ethical breeders out there.
My brother, who thought he was saving litter mates, adopted 2 Westies from a pet store. They have such severe allergies, one is actually allergic to humans (skin/hair dander I'm guessing). He's dumped tons of money into vets, special shampoo, meds, home bathing. Nothing works long term. The dogs are about 5 now. I don't know how he does it. He's devoted and doesn't want to give them up so he's looking at maybe another 10 years of massive medical headaches/bills. Mutts are the best!
Aww. Poor babies, and poor brother! That's got to be so stressful.
Wow, you're what we call confidently incorrect. SOME pet store dogs are bred specifically for that purpose, and some are from shelters. You really should just encourage people to only buy pet store dogs if they are from shelters.
Hi, no I'm not, I'm talking about stores like in this post that are selling "purebred" puppies. There are indeed stores like Petco and PetSmart that only work with local adoption agencies. I worked at both for over 5 years, and I've been volunteering at shelters since I turned 18 (I'm 32) as a walker and dog trainer. I'm now a professional service trainer, soooo ... I'm a bit more experienced in that department than you think.
Is that a freaking hamster drinking bottle??
It looks like it's sized for rabbits or ferrets, possibly the previous pet in that cage was a rabbit.
Ah, makes sense. A little off putting for reasons that I can't put into words though.
Go and get the little goober
My kind of goofball 🥺
Pupper!
He is holing like no one is watching 🤪
Why didn't you
Literally 🤪
I’m in UK and can’t believe dogs are sold like this ☹️ We have our problems with breeders but to put them in a small glass cage is heartbreaking.
I love dog personalities they a million times better than any human personalities. If I could be on an island of dogs I'd die a happy man lol
Adorable - but one thing: If that puppet is supposed to be a pure Bernese Mountain Dog, they sadly have remarkably short life spans, half of them will get cancer and a tenth pass away from cancer before age 6. Get a true mixed breed rescue. Cancer is expensive and gut wrenching. They are adorable but I learned this when researching my own mixed breed dog’s histiocytosis (cancer) - it’s a type incredibly common in BMDs and I never knew that.
What's stopping you?
OP- where is this? State & store?
You go back there and adopt him!
