At what point is it no longer fan fiction and becomes plagiarism? I make no money from it and I give credit to the author. I love his characters but I don’t like the story

Decided to do some fan fiction
From the first time I watched Lucy I was intrigued by Sam Fennah’s characters and their world. Enjoyed Satellite City and couldn’t wait to get my hands on the book. But to be honest I’m disappointed. Completely. I want more for these characters so I decided to write about them living in a simulation. Hopefully Fennah won’t be too pissed about this I don’t make any money off of fan fiction.
