Apple is banking on building a reputation for producing “10 time Oscar nominee” movies to attract subscribers to their service, and it’s been working slowly. Every mention of Apple TV + is always accompanied by “they have a small but high quality library” versus Netflix and Prime which are now stagnating in subscribers because everyone is frustrated by the vast swathes of garbage on those platforms.
The only reason a movie like KOTFM had a budget that huge was because Apple literally doesn’t give a fuck about spending as much money as directors ask for. They never expected a 3 hour drama about a couple in the Osage County to make $600 million, they’re just funding all these passion projects to expand their streaming library and get awards, so the brand builds. They know it’s a long-term investment.
