All government action is an act of force. Literally everything the government does, is done at gunpoint if you peel back the layers enough. In fact, a monopoly on the use of force is a fair definition of government.

Sometimes that is necessary. But it’s not bad to want to minimize it.

I felt that way about Minority Report. The idea that people could be imprisoned for crimes that they were predicted to commit has a lot of fun moral and ethical issues that would be good to explore. But instead the movie focuses on the “predictors” and how they don’t always agree with each other. I thought it would have been better if the predictions were actually reliable and the focus was on an accused criminal. Then it would be an action movie about free will.

Cars 2 had a great opening scene but then it goes down the toilet with that “ToooowwwMATER, that’s who!”

My mother worked for a few months as a volunteer in the office that handles letters to the White House from the general public. This was back in the 80s, but at that time they would send a signed thank you note and a picture of the president to every person who wrote in.

Our 11 year old son just sent one a few days ago and I am hoping they still do that, because he’s looking forward to getting it back. No idea what the timeline is like though.

Tweetsie railroad in NC when our oldest (he is 16 now) was 4. They had a Thomas the Train day and he was so happy to “meet Thomas”. Also did some lovely hikes and visited my wife’s Alma mater (Appalachian state). Really good trip for all of us.

Nobody else could have started the country off on a united footing. He knew it, did his duty, and set all the right precedents. He saw himself selflessly, knowing the outsize impact his actions would have, both formally as president and informally in social settings. Truly a great man and leader. As an American my life is dramatically better because he was first, and not someone else.

The error silencer is my favorite. Just put a muffler on those logs like they are exhaust.

Those are actually thoughtful points I had never considered, especially for Johnson.

The scariest thing here is that a missile was running windows.

She was the only good actor in that scene imo. The other scientists did not seem especially afraid or worried. Even the guy who was forced into the oven was just kind of like 'oh, ok'. Her character was great but overall I thought that scene left a lot to be desired.

It was also odd that they could not reach outside to report the breach to Vought, but they were able to call her and have her come in. And that she came in without any kind of support or assistance. Was her confidence in their psychological control of him so great that she didn't feel a need to call for help? Not that any help would have done much good...

Briefly, but they were struck down as unconstitutional (the original constitution explicitly banned income taxes). Later it was brought back through a constitutional amendment.

Hero of Two Worlds is a fantastic book about him and his very interesting life.

  1. Suburban is our only car. Used to have a minivan. It was better for family trips, will probably go back to a minivan in a few years after the suburban dies.

I think you’ll find that a certain kind of person does not care what they have in absolute terms, as long as it is “more than everyone else”. And another kind of person doesn’t care what they have per se, as long as they can tell others what to do. So it would probably depend on the king, and what they valued. But mostly I think the cultural foreignness of our time would outweigh any creature comforts and they would want to go back after a few weeks.

It would be a pain in the butt because the kids would get off school and it would make it harder to actually vote.

Pirates of the Caribbean gave us TWO perfect pirates. Johnny Depp absolutely defined and created his iconic character. And Geoffrey Rush doesn’t get enough credit for being an absolutely fantastic “normal” pirate. They both are the gold standards for their roles. But Captain Jack is so unique that only Johnny Depp could ever do him.

This one seems fitting:

“I have been almost overwhelmed by the announcement of the sad event [Lincoln's assassination] which has so recently occurred. I feel incompetent to perform duties so important and responsible as those which have been so unexpectedly thrown upon me.”
