Reading about the history of venetian literature really gives a new perspective to medieval literature! I thought for sure you were exaggerating a little for saying that they would have used venetian for a work like this, not latin, but no! This is quite funny to me as all medieval literature of my country, not withstanding oral tradition, is in latin. And I'm from Finland! I guess living in a merchant republic has its benefits.

I can understand the decision to have the translation be in italian – the book is aimed at a popular audience – but do think that the decision calls for critizism, and demands further explanation. I myself might have tried to dodge the bullet by simply ommiting any translation for the text. As it stands it could be seen as a part, maybe an unvilling one but still a part of the erasure project of regional languages.

The accusations of destroying Venice through tourism and the ignorance of the author are exaggerated and unfair. Claming the whole of venetian history as cultural heritage no-one outside the sphere is able to accurately represent is redundant, all modern interpretations are bound to be wrong in some ways. And really the scholarly abilities and knowledge on the subject by G. B. Stewart is actually quite unknown for the most of us – we only know Blue, not the person behind it.
