My son works on towers around the country. I can look at his location shared from his phone and see when he is on tower vs just parked on site. It’s that precise. Of course, the turbine isn’t generating when he’s working on the blades, so I guess it’s a different situation from yours.

When our kids were little (2-5), we’d put them in their pajamas and leave town at 8pm. We could make Seattle in ~13 hours taking turns driving.

I suggest a stop in the towns of Mount Shasta or Weed, depending on how everyone is doing. If carsickness is an issue I suggest eating in Shasta and not Weed. After Weed I-5 gets more long curves and more up over and down hills. I think I5 around Lake Shasta is the curviest part in California (not counting Southern Cal. But that’s the Disney family road trip…)

Beaches are steeper and have higher cliffs in CA. Sand is more quartz and feldspar in California with no carbonates. No Redwood trees in Florida. Homes are typically further back from the high water line in California.

Northern California gets lots of marine fog and people are dressed warmly.

I love Marble Valley. Two years ago I hiked up to Shadow Lake, off the PCT south of Marble Valley. Hiking along the crest I saw an enormous bird with number tags hanging from its wings. I suddenly realized this was one of the California Condors that had been released in the Klamath by local tribal groups that spring.

The bird soared across the top of Wooly Creek drainage and on to the next valley without having to flap a wing at all. I just stood and watched, appreciating the moment.

I’m going to Tangle Blue this week. It will be my first trip to a lake in the Trinities since 1997. I stopped when I had kids. My younger daughter is now 22. She and her bf worked on trail restoration for summer 2022, including at Tangle Blue. They are excited to get me back to the Trinities.

As I approach retirement I am taking note of which counties are served by Kaiser. That is a “must have” checkbox as we consider where we want to retire to.

I’m heading into the Trinity Alps this week. It will be my first time there since 1997. Both back in the 90s and now I was happy to spend some money in town, knowing they really depended on us flat-landers.

I remember doing sit-ups in what I now realize was terrible form. I think our goal was 100 sit-ups. I got to 40 and started wondering why we were trying to get this stupid award. I got to 60 and said to Coach Bliss “Ok. That’s all I can do.”

(Yes, his name was Bliss. He was actually very laid back. He never made us do anything we didn’t want to do.)
