I don’t really distro hop. I’ve been on Ubuntu for years now. But when you’re on Reddit, you hear your distro get criticised (especially true with Ubuntu) and you hear people passionately talking up the distribution they use. So to an extent there’s a fear of missing out. Luckily in my case I’m more lazy that I have FOMO, so I stay put. But I can see how others would be tempted. 

I remember there was a period in the first half of the 90s that if I had a tough question, there was a pretty good chance I’d never get the answer to it. 

One example was friends at school were into rotary engines and were using terms like Bridgeport, 13B etc. The only way of finding out what they were talking about was to just pick it up by listening to them talk. I couldn’t really ask my parents or look it up in the library. It wasn’t that kind of topic. 

Exactly this. When we had dial up Internet, I wasn’t on it that much in the scheme of things. Never when sitting on the couch or out of the house. But if there was a question I had, I would investigate. 

Asian or not, I wouldn’t be living in the US right now. 

So true. I can honestly say that if an Asian family has issues fitting in in Australia, some of the blame would go to the family themselves. Most Australians will treat someone Asian like one of the gang if they’re wanting to be. 

Yeah. And can you imagine a white guy bragging about how he has no Asian friends when living in Hong Kong?

I grew up in one of the most multiracial areas of Sydney. Like truly multicultural, not just all Chinese (Eastwood) or all Arabic (Lakemba). That was actually good because kids were forced to interact with different cultures. However one thing I noticed was that for the most past, the [East] Asians all stuck together (Vietnamese, Chinese, etc) and everyone else stuck together (Greek, Lebanese, Islander, Anglo, Indian, Croatian etc). And it wasn’t because us “others” wouldn’t be friends with Asians because the odd Asian who wanted to buckle the trend was absolutely able to play handball or whatever with us. But there were some Asian girls in my year that I wouldn’t even have known the names of. 

I had one of those MacBooks. I had to get the whole top case replaced to fix a faulty key. Then some time after that, my space key started playing up. In a fit of rage, I smashed the keyboard with my fist. What ever was under the space bar dislodged and it was fine from then on.

They were always busy when I caught them. Or at least the service was that lined up most with business hours.

It only matters because it’s a fact. No, in this context it doesn’t change things. But when you see parents with a Downs Syndrome child, you should not suspect they are related.

Ah yes, V sets… the oldest yet best trains in on the current network. It’s ridiculous the D sets have been in limbo for as long as they have. But it’s been nice getting a few more years out of the mighty Vs. 

It’s interesting they outlived the C sets which were a newer train than these.

Also it’s great you can actually see out of the windows as opposed to the T set windows which are permanently fogged. 

True. But staying on the one train is the best. That means you can take a nap in the morning or whatever. Whatever helps you get through a daily hour and 20 min comm. 

Yeah I've seen that. E.g. Sometimes the 7:04 Central via Strathfield from Gosford (coming from Newcastle) is only a few minutes late, and they let the 7:07 City via North Shore go before it, sometimes with the 7:04 already at the station picking up passengers. It's obvious they don't want the North Shore train held up even a minute. And sometimes I catch the North Shore train for this very reason. It's longer to get to Central, but it's clearly a big priority and runs a reliable service.

This is not going to be good news for Central Coast commuters working at Chatswood, St Leonards or North Sydney. Perhaps many Central Coast to North Shore commuters will switch to the Metro from Epping?

That's ridiculous if true. Wyong via North Shore services are well patronised. Thankfully I don't personally commute to the North Shore anymore. But I used to every day and it was very busy.

I get that. But Wyong via North Shore isn't a standard intercity run. What will they use for these services once the H sets are repurposed?

Some people have answered this by explaining that until recently, tunnels beyond Springwood west bound didn't have the clearance for H sets. But that doesn't explain why Newcastle gets both H and V, while South Coast gets just H. As a train nerd who lives on the Central Coast, it's nice we get a variety of trains.
