It does help, thank you. Will treating a knit sun hoody be enough to keep mosquitoes from biting through?

Believe it or not I tried that and couldn't find any conclusive info.

Can anyone think of a little gift that one could get for a backpacker that has all the best gear? A friend of a friend is helping me with a resupply and I wanted to send something small but thoughtful in the package for him.

How can you tell if something is knit vs. woven? I'm starting the JMT 7/7 and most of my days will be in a pair of shorts (I know but I hate hiking in pants) and a Capilene Cool Daily Hoody. I plan to dip them all in permethrin as well.

Just checked -- the Fizan 3 weigh the same, are made of aluminum (less fragile?) and have cork grips (better?) and are only $15 more? Seems like I should consider the Fizan instead?

Good suggestion -- so does that mean if I strap them to my pack for long flat stretches they'll be cumbersome?

Can't beat that price and would shave a half-pound total (11.1 vs 19.2 oz per pair) off my 25 YO Lekis (that still work great BTW).

Should I get eem? Something else? Or just stick with what I have that works since it's "carried weight" or whatever.

Looking for restaurant / food request

Hello,

I'm flying into Vegas in July and as I soon as I land renting a car and then heading towards the Sierras for a hiking trip. I'll have been flying for 5 hours. Any recs for some food to get to go on my way out of town? I was going to just hit In n out but hoping there's something better to get for the road.

Thanks!

Sorry - I wasn't clear. I'll have sun gloves for the JMT. Was wondering out loud if they would keep my hands warm if/when it gets cold.

Shakedown: JMT July 2024Shakedown

Current base weight: 15.7 pounds

Location/temp range/specific trip description: 40 to 70 degrees (I've heard)

Budget: None really except the items below

Non-negotiable Items: I can't budge on the tent/pad/bag/quilt since they're all relatively new unless I sell the current ones I have

Solo or with another person?: Solo

Additional Information:

Open to all kind of tips/suggestions!

The items in the list are the items I currently have.

Some thoughts/questions

  • Pack cover vs. compactor bag. If I go with only a compactor bag, does my bag just get super wet?
  • Clothes:
    • Wondering if I'll be warm enough. Not worried about warmth when moving though.
    • Do I really need wind pants if I have long johns?
    • Will sun gloves be enough on Whitney
    • Do I really need a beanie if my rain jacket, airmesh and sunsort all have hoods?

I'm not sure TBH -- I guess it'll be a function of mosquitos, how tired we are and how nice the various spots look. What were you thinking?

Thanks! I guess the flip side is, does it get annoying to stop to filter water all the time?

Water capacity on JMT

Wondering what others have done for their water capacity. On the east coast I usually bring 2x 1.5L smart water bottles. Sounds like there's plenty of water sources on the JMT. I know Elizabeth Wenk in her book lists sources etc.

Was thinking of paring down to 1 1.5L bottle (plus a 3L BeFree) in part because of the way my load will sit.

Note, leaving Lyell on 7/7

Water crossings

Just wondering -- how many water crossings does one actually see on the JMT that are not just basic rock-hopping or have bridges/logs etc. I know there's the "walk though 'em in your trail runners" camp and the "change into water shoes" camp. Just wondering how often you see crossings where "you will get wet on this ride." Realize this is time, day dependant but would love any general info you can provide. Note: SOBO, Lyell, 7/7 start.

Got it! I was confused. I'm sharing gear as well. On lighterpack you can set QTY to .5 for shared gear if you want.
