Their guest suggested it's avoidance of a central underlying sense of low self esteem caused through early childhood trauma, and that to confront it is so dangerous it might lead to a psychotic breakdown.

Therefore, they cannot ever be 'wrong' or 'bad' - there's always a reason why they are right. Because otherwise they'd be obliged to process stuff they really want to stay away from or perhaps do not have the capacity to resolve.

The cognitive dissonance is a small price to pay. Recently an article by an abortion nurse, described holding the hands of a patient who was cursing her during the procedure, and that in her experience, anti-abortionists who had a procedure explained why they were an exception to the things they won't permit for others.

As to your conceptual experiment, there's already been enough damaged folks to learn from, brain scans that show low reactivity to certain stimulii have been used to identify psychopathic tendencies.

The person in your theoretical experiment, may already see themselves deep down as awful and their behaviour is a way of transcending it without accepting the vulnerability of healing. It's not their fault, they are the victims and entitled to do whatever they need to, to regain power. Better to be Predator than Victim, or they lack the capacity to empathise, and therefore are not bothered by the actions and so why would they classify themselves as 'bad'?

If the universe is finite there's a limit. If it ain't, there ain't? Therefore is it possible that there's infinite life in an infinite space it's just a reallllly big cookie and the chocolate chips are spaced apart? Are there spaces where there's a lot going on cos the distribution does not follow a nice clean curve?

Firstly, sending you some very positive vibes. This is survivable and I can attest to it. Level 3, or 'DID' under the OSDD schema simply means you got a Strong Dose, rather than 'must be institutionalised'.

My comment was in answer to the 'tropey' part of the question and referred to the folks who i have had experience with who had the worst symptoms, rather than winding up as Serial Killers, were so affected they were in inpatient treatment. They were not tropey villains because they were hurting so bad they didnt have time to act out. Managing day to day life is hard enough.

I am super glad you have a plan for managing it, you are *not* doomed. Nor are you fated to become Le Anime Style Villain - that's one of the biggest BS aspects of pop culture DID.
