Someone left it open on a shelf somewhere, and now no one can find it.

I was really struggling with cleaning the filters for the vent over the stove. I had no idea they could hold so much grease.

If you add grated apple, it’s like having applesauce inside the latke, in the best possible way!

That sounds delicious!

I tried to cook bacon on a flat griddle. When the grease started to fill the groove around the edge, I panicked, and got a turkey baster to siphon some off before it started to drip on the stove and possibly catch fire… but the turkey baster could not handle bacon grease, so it melted… and I wound up burning my arm quite badly with the grease.

I’m lucky I did not burn the place down.

I've never seen brownies go to waste. Even a homemade sheet cake will be devoured.

I love a lava cake, especially one made with quality chocolate, but even if they had been perfect, it would have been a blah presentation, like the not-chocolate enough sponge cake the day before.

Learned from some of the best! Stole the rest from TV.

Whipped cream and pretty glassware will cover for a multitude of sins, even with experienced diners...

Sour cream and onion or BBQ potato chips. Or All-dressed, if you can get them.

Yes!

There are water cooled countertops for candy making (though many just use a stone) and some chilled countertops that are for display and service, rather than prep.

I have seen videos from Asia of frozen desserts (cold rolls) being prepped on a "cold top" with spatulas, a bit like teppanyaki, but chilled.

Or he had time to cater to them and adjust.

I am also sometimes bad at cake….

You can use it in the place of sour cream in many recipes. I use the full fat Greek yogurt, and it makes for a nice dip esp for veggieswith the Lipton onion soup, if you are just looking to use it up.

It also goes nicely into baked goods, like cake.

I like it with fresh fruit or some honey for breakfast, or in the afternoon when I want a cold snack.

Having done this with my own parent, I saw the photo as opening the door to a new relationship, instead of a “normal” one. A reset, and a fragile one. I hope they can make it work, because I think that’s a story that a lot of us need to show how it can be hard to build a new relationship with people who have hurt you, but that it’s possible if you both want it.

It was an incredible episode.

Rescue the Cake!SpoilerBelow Deck Med

Most pros and skilled home cooks have a bunch of “cheap special effects” up their sleeves for when things don’t go quite right with a meal. Knowing that he was not great at cake, I feel like Jono should have had a better backup plan for his desserts, ice cream can only fix so much.

Here’s my fix for the failed lava cakes.

Ask interior to grab some glassware (stemless wineglasses or martini glasses).

Mash the heck out of the fail cakes. Add a little sugar syrup or chocolate syrup as needed. (Or a little alcohol like amaretto or rum as preferences allow)

Put some whipped cream in the bottom of the glass, add a layer of cake, a layer of that soft ice cream, and a bit more whipped cream. Garnish with a berry, if you have it.

Pretty, and made up out of stuff you are likely to have on hand.

What would your emergency dessert rescues look like?

Sugar and survivalSpoilerDiscussion

I keep going back to “Ice Chips” and the contrast with Fishes. Donna got burned out making things b eautiful for the people she loved, and felt unappreciated, and Sugar was determined to make things beautiful for herself. She needed some help, but I feel like that was a healthy lesson for her…

I think it’s important to separate what is “not a good story” and “not a story you want to watch”. I think they have done some great storytelling about trauma, inspiration, healing, finding purpose, but much of it has been hard to watch.

Yep, focusing on food has alienated Carmy from people, not connected him.

One of the Herrells venues, either Allston or Harvard Square. I am in need of a Kentucky Bourbon Vanilla shake with malt. Or any of a dozen other flavors.

What are we haunted by, why, and to what degree is that shit in our own heads, undermining us, rather than people actively still messing with us? What do we do when someones actions are still haunting us, the trauma is still unfolding and how do we take control over our responses to that?

So yeah, you hit it on the head.

French Onion. I like the broth, I love melty cheese, I should love this, but its always piece of soggy bread, and a big clot of cheese and just kindof a mess that gives me an awful tummyache.
