It's possible to just pull the audio stream from the video, there are even free tools online to pull an MP3 from an MP4 or AVI. Then I would use Audacity to play with the levels and effects to see if it makes it any clearer.
The audio encoding on most cameras is usually pretty low quality though and distance from the mic is usually too much to get good detail.
