Additionally, after fermentation, red wine is aged in wood barrels for months to years, where white wine is generally aged for a much shorter time in steel tanks. The barrels allow for airflow, while the tanks do not- that oxygenation over time helps bring out the more complex flavors in a red.

I'm not trying to make whites sound bad, or one note- my daily go to is a light, white Pinot Grigio- but the process is different enough and there's more time is involved between red and white to make a difference in price a necessary.
