Is it possible that OP is thinking of the segue from Coil to Heir Apparent?

I’d also think Hessian Peel but also maybe Lotus Eaters because of the a cappella intro?

You’d think the fake brother would realize that he forgot his leg the second he stepped out of his home

That might be the problem! (Half joking)

I figured as such considering the legendary status of them lol. But yea that’s fair I guess it depends on what you do call metal/what kind of metal we are talking about. Unfortunately most metal bands do not have the fun improv aspects of jazz but I do kno some pull from the harmonic/rhythmic vocab of it. On the other hand I do find plenty of jazz that to me, sounds “metal af” lol

Mahavishnu orchestra would prob be the more popular example. Plenty of other jazz fusion bands of their time can fit the bill too(prob even better). There’s a whole slew of them that were essentially heavy prog rock bands that left more space for improv

Yea I think I recall him saying something along those lines somewhere

Usually songwriters don’t just stop writing songs tho. Touring is prob the harder part for the band despite it being what makes them real money.

Yea they still don’t. It’s been said by multiple ppl that Trey will think of a general list of songs for a given run of shows. I think he even has some ppl ask around their general camp to get an idea of what songs the crew/friends are craving. But at showtime it all gets thrown away

I agree w/ this sentiment in general, but I will say that Sco refers to MSMW as a jamband at least. And maybe they are at least jam adjacent. I might even say that medeski’s projects fall closer to the middle than chick’s do there was a jazz-jam spectrum. Not to mention, both Sco and Medeski have been regular friends of Phil. Ultimately you’re right tho, it really doesn’t matter. They’re all monsters

Any dominant 7 chord. The trademark sound would be a major/dominant 1 then up a half step to a major chord built on a flat 2. Also a major/dominant 1 down to a minor chord built on the flat 7 has that sound and may be easier to make less cheesy sounding.

It’s the 5th mode of the harmonic minor scale so it has all the same chords as that. Hope this helps and feel free to ask if you need any clarification!

There are tons. To name a few:

Jerry Garcia (like him or not but if you take the time, any musician would be floored by his diversity in both songwriting and playing)

John Scofield (eclectic mix of jazz/funk and while he’s so unique and varied compared to his peers, i think his groove based stuff can help a non jazz guitarist get an ear for the deeper stuff in that genre)

Prince (great tunes with pop appeal. Most of his “hits” aren’t guitar heavy per se but he has such a rich catalogue of music and a lot of it is. Most records still don’t show his chops but I think we all kno he has them)

Late to the party but I agree with The Cap. But I’ll add: Brooklyn Bowl: the vibe and various novelties that come with it Brooklyn mirage: awesome courtyard space and great lighting potential but not enough bands go thru there Fillmore Philly: great spot and cool part of Philly when the heads are in town

In terms of PAC pavillion style: MPP and Bethel Woods have the best lawn I’ve been on. Hartford is pretty much a tie in terms of that but is less pretty

I may have some for you too. I’ll check tomorrow

Agreed! His chops/technique and harmonic understanding is top notch and he totally could cast a wider net of fans with that alone. He has a feel/sound/style that is unique to him which in the end, is def the goal
