It looks like stacked 2x4s. I would consider removing the outermost 2x4s, then lag-screwing a pair of 1" steel perforated tubes horizontally spanning the wall studs. Then you can attach any sized mount you need to the steel tubing.
Ideally, you'd do that too for the same reason. But since nothing will (rather should not) sit of the end of the post, you could cut it at a bevel to let the water run off. But taping would be a nice detail. And beveling + tape would be insanely cool.
