Should we cancel our honeymoon to Mexico?

Hi! I am getting married on Saturday July 6th, and we had planned to leave for our honeymoon to Mexico on Sunday July 7th. We booked an all inclusive resort at Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya through Costco trips. Unfortunately, hurricane Beryl is anticipated to pass over our resort on Friday the 5th. By the time it reaches the resort, it’s supposed to be a category 2 hurricane.

If we cancel today, we get 90% of our money back but if we cancel tomorrow or Friday, we only get about 60% back. We don’t know what to do. We have limited knowledge on different categories of hurricanes and can’t find much information about the anticipated effects on the resort website. We would hate to cancel and it end up being fine, but we would also hate to not cancel and lose our money.

If we end up cancelling, are there any recommendations on last minute honeymoon destinations in the US? We are located in north Texas. Thanks in advance!

I would probably cancel and plan a close by minimoon (some place you can drive to) and then reschedule a proper honeymoon later when you have time to breathe and think about it.

All hurricanes are damaging. They range from "damaging" to "devastating" the degree of which mostly depends on the infrastructure they hit more than the storm strength. I don't care what category the storm is, the days afterwards are clean up and repair. Going somewhere that was hit by a hurricane of any size the day before is a mistake. Best case scenario you'll be dealing with debris and water cleanup. There is no situation where they are business as usual the day (or two) after a hurricane hit.

You should look into the insurance policies through Costco trips for inclement weather and emergencies. You should also check with your credit card (if you used one) as they may offer travel insurance as a perk.

If there is insurance associated with the trip, contact them and understand exactly what triggers and criteria they use. Once you understand your full set of options you can figure out what saves you the most money between canceling yourself today vs going through the insurance process.

To add to this, even if you aren’t hit directly, that means resources from your area will be sent to help. I don’t know if it’d be as much of a concern with all inclusive resorts, but I used to live in an inland city in a hurricane prone state, and hotels would cancel reservations to provide shelter for people fleeing the storms.

I was in Tulum during a category 2 hurricane a few years ago and it lasted one night. It wasn’t bad. However if you’re in a resort they might move you from your room and that would be very annoying. You might spend a night or 2 at the convention center to be safer. I would cancel.

I'd scope out their website to see what prices and availability look like for them currently, in case you want to rebook last minute if the weather changes. Also find 1-2 properties as backups, ideally book them with free cancellation until the day before check in, and keep your flights for now.

Alternate destinations in the US can include Napa, Palm Springs, Hilton Head / Palmetto Bluff, Bar Harbor, Bermuda? Definitely see what accommodations you can snag with no cancellation penalties.

It's very likely your flight will be cancelled, and even if not, the aftermath will be huge. There could be power outages lasting days, etc. The category doesn't matter as much as other factors. For example, if the storm surge hits at high tide, the flooding will be devastating.

Also, when you don't mention postponing it, I assume PTO is an issue? If so, you have almost too much to choose from. The entire SE Atlantic coast is available, since you like beaches. Maybe ask your bridesmaids to ask their friends/fam for recommendations. Another option is just pick a well known resort like Sandals and see what they have available.

Cancel today. Travel will be a mess. The beach will be a mess. You might not have power or water worst case. Not worth it. At least this way you get 90% back. Source = I grew up in Miami and have been through 10+ hurricanes
