Is this a healthy Shar pei?

Im hoping this is the right place to ask, I came across someone I know through a friends Instagram accounts posts about their dogs, is this a healthy looking dog? I'm not too clued up on Shar Peis and I know all dogs are different but idk his dogs looks odd and I'm just concerned about their well being, he also had videos where he had two locked in 1 cage and it just seems odd , I don't wanna be a hater I just wanna know if they're okay

Absolutely not. Even dogs that are typically lean where you can sometimes see their ribs for most of their lives like boxers wouldn’t look like this. They would have a high amount of muscle mass throughout their body. This dog is just severely malnourished. This is very sad.

Body looks just like our boys when we rescued him. He was a street dog from Stockton. That dog needs some weight put on imo

That’s your sign that this is not a quality person and should not own animals. This looks like a “backyard breeding” situation. Very sad. I’d report to animal welfare if I were you.

Ribs should be felt, not seen. The hip also seems to lack roundness. Underweight for sure.

Before reporting, please check - are they rescuing malnourished dogs or caring for dogs with cancer? Was this dog in poorer condition previously or in better condition previously?

No. Call Animal Protective Services. They are breeding and mistreating these dogs. One time I delayed calling APS and the next week one of the dogs that the breeder had was beaten to death by him. Ppl who do this to animals are not well. The dog looks starving!

I tried contacting them as soon as I saw the photos of the dogs but everything was closed last night 😞 I still made an online report, I've emailed and even messaged a few animal welfare places on Instagram out of desperation to show them the account, I reported it to Instagram too but I'm not holding my breath that they'll do anything useful, gonna ring them now too, I won't stop until he's been stopped

This dog is too thin and it’s also not okay that he put two dogs in one crate. Could you make an anonymous report to get an animal welfare check? Where I live, you can call the police and they will go to the persons house and ask to see the animals. If the person says “no”, they can’t do anything though.

Looks a lot like my guy! Sharpei/Pitbull XL mix. The pitbull mix makes them very lean and muscular, but this dog is very underweight. I give my guy 2 scoops of merricks dog kibble with an egg morning, and repeat the process later during the day.

This is what my guy looks like atm… you can see some ribs, but he eats about 5 cups a day with 2 eggs, we’re also working out a lot.

No double the food intake or it’s what’s being feed to the Pei. Rules are rules so no chicken or bird products. Hi pro plus 80/20 for 3 months than 2 cups of wholesome whitefish or salmon 3 meals a day. Also with the dry food add one can of real salmon spread out over the 3 feedings until fit but not fat. Doubt me here’s a picture of my male when he was 8 months old.

There is a difference between a “malnourished” and “well-conditioned” dog and the average person (someone not involved in sporting dog competitions and training) cannot see the difference.

A lot of dogs in that community are taken care of (feed and medical) better than most peoples children.

Not all dogs are companion dogs. This dog is healthy-ish for a sporting dog, despite being an odd breed to condition to such a degree. Definitely not malnourished. If you do not believe me, consult the experts in the area. People breed game dogs all over the world and you will see that the dogs in the best shape…most normal people would believe the animal is too skinny and too many ribs etc…until you see the animal in action

If that's your opinion but this is just one photo from many, I went deeper into the account and the dogs are scared and miserable, there's videos of them in small cages together and he does unsafe practises with training them

Yes, it is my opinion based only on this one picture. I am open minded. If I had more information, I would take that into account. The only sure way to check on the dogs is to be on site and see what’s happening there. From what you say it doesn’t seem to be right.
