Is this breathing a pei thing?? & what does it mean? Always when prey is hiding in a hole. Do peis have a very high prey drive? She is half, but exhibits many of the breeds characteristics, so I was wondering if this was exclusive to the tribe of regal stubborn wrinkly potato buns.
DEER?!
Yep. Luckily someone with a lot of land eventually fell in love with her.
Cats. Yes. Chickens. Yes. Ducks. Yes. I’ll even give them geese. But a deer is gigantic!
Yup and that's why she's a bit more memorable then some of the other dogs
Was it Bella?
Yes!
We called ours the deer slayer, felt bad for the deer but she took down and Buck and a doe. It took us forever to find her a home. She hit the lottery with an amazing forever home. Thanks for volunteering, Shar-Pei rescues are really needed.
Oh my word! A Hunter indeed.
I’m glad she found a forever home though.. definitely wouldn’t be a dealbreaker for me, but I know that’s easy to say while not knowing the extent of it.
This made me laugh super hard. My boy is half Pei and absolutely convinced he could take down a deer if given the chance. Maybe he has more of a shot than I give him credit for!!
lol. This reminded me of the time my pair were playing tug of war with a live squirrel. Poor thing.
Shar-pei were all purpose farm dogs. They will guard, herd, hunt, etc..
The herding always makes me giggle. Mine have always tried to put hubby and I in the same room if we are in different parts of the house. Recording near bedtime.
That’s hilarious 😆 I hope you guys listen to her.
So funny about the herding! Mine herds my youngest kid when he goes outside trying to get him back into the house.
Yeah. If I bring her to visit with me, she just cannot handle people being in multiple rooms.
I love the at home self-assigned tasks of herding dogs. Although I am a huge Pei fan, I once had a Labrador and Airedale mix and right at 10pm he would jump up on the bed look at us and bark one time, jump off look at us and bark one time, and repeat until my husband and I were in the bed with him. We preferred a later bedtime but it wasn't up to us apparently 😂
Total Pei thing IMHO.
Mine have all been pedigree and had huge prey drives, are very good ratters as well which is probably what is down that drain.
Before I adopted her one of the workers told me she was found in the wild living off chickens… I still don’t know if that was a joke or not, but she does have an obsession with chickens still.
Yep. Mine loves to watch though a window, that window is never clean 😭
lol, snoot smudges are the only acceptable kinds of smudges, imo.
Regal stubborn wrinkly potato buns is my new favorite descriptor for shar pei. And yes! Gigantic prey drive. The snuffling is all about getting the scent.
My pei had a massive prey drive. Her favourite things to try and chase (we kept her on a lead unless it was fenced) were birds especially ducks (luckily she couldn’t fly and hated water), cats, rabbits and foxes. She’d get fixated if she saw them. She also used to dig up hibernating frogs and eat them, and it was exactly the same digging action and breathing! Once we realised what she was doing we dragged her away, but she was a nightmare with frogs!
Haha, it doesn’t help that they’re also such a stubborn breed.. this isn’t the first time I’ve heard of people having to physically drag their peis away from encounters like those.
They are super stubborn! They know what they want! I find them a really intelligent breed, but they use it for trouble!
😆 at least it’s entertaining.. who could stay frustrated with their moopy faces?
Then the foaming mouth from the toxin in their skin?
Our local frog isn’t toxic to dogs. Only bufo bufo the European toad is a problem, and she never ate one as she didn’t like toads.
My old pit/lab mix loved the bufo toads. Weʻd turn around and see him standing there just leaking toxic foam and know that there was a masticated toad somewhere in the yard. Iʻd be on jowl-wiping duty all night. No permanent damage ever.
When I got my new dog from the pound, a pit/pei mix, I got her because her bio said she was a good ratter. Wanna know how many rats sheʻs gotten since Iʻve had her? Yup. Zero. In fact, when she encounters a critter, she just noses it. Maybe the herding more than the prey drive in this one.
You’re right! It was the toads that our Gumbo would “eat” - as in he’d hold them in his mouth until he started foaming then would mlem them out. They’d hop off no worse for the wear. My mother was screaming that we needed to take him to the emergency vet because he was poisoned. 🙄
My old Shar Pei mix would stare at a gopher hole indefinitely if we let her. I would have to physically bring her into the house and distract her to get her mind off that hole that a gopher once popped its head out of!! Hahaha this so reminds me of her!
Do you know the other breeds of your dog? So cute!
That’s so funny.. sounds like quite the obsession.. I was aware of not using a laser pointer as a toy for dogs- but my nephew brought over and she went crazy for it. by the time I told him to stop she was completely obsessed; sat in the middle of the living room forever waiting for the red to appear again.
I honestly don’t know the rest of her make up.. I was told husky, mastiff, rottie, chow. But I can’t know for sure unless I get a dna test.
That’s how my cats are with the red laser light!
If you ever do get a DNA test please post her on r/DoggyDNA they would love guessing what she is and learning the results!
Ooh! Now that is some fun motivation.
It’s so fun! Dog DNA is a trip, you would not believe how many dogs have pit bull and Chihuahua dna but look more like a collie or poodle. Haha!
My girl will chase the red dot like a nut!
My Pit/Rotty does this more often than my Pei. But she will do it on occasion like when our neighbors got a puppy and we’re potty training it using the front door/yard.
Coloring reminds me of my Shadow - rottie pei.
Oh yes, definitely 😊 I just took a look. They have the same chonky base of their tail too.
I think that breathing is your pei sniffing reeaally intensely, trying to zero in on the location of the prey!
Fun fact: dog’s noses have that slit on the side so that when they’re exhaling while sniffing like this, they don’t blow the scent away and all over the joint
Edit to add: She is really stinking adorable. I love peis so much
Omg yes! My Pei/Shepard was once let off leash and she disappeared over the horizon chasing a deer herd.
I didn’t hear about it until later when my boyfriend asked me to find a weekend vet to sew up the flap of skin hanging off her forehead…because she had probably run into a barbed wire fence in her chase. 🤦♀️
Omg lol. I bet she had quite the adventure. Did she come back on her own?
Believe or not I have never let my pooch off leash since adopting her.. she goes on tons of rides and walks. But one time she got loose while I was at work and it was the most nerve-racking five hours of my life; I found her right at Sunset outside of a dense forest. Plus, I had just adopted her so I doubt she would’ve found her way back home. I Have a fear of losing her since then.
I would never let MY dog off leash EITHER! But the now-husband is another story! He told me he actually got scared cause he couldn’t even see her anymore…she had run beyond my mom’s farm onto the adjacent farm….so I was really happy she hadn’t been shot. 😳
Omg, sounds like a pony snorting after a good gallop! Yep, insane prey drive.
yep that’s a classic sound, i miss it, my boy used to snort and study smells all the time
Yes I have little tiny holes in my yard because he does this. He’s full pei and looks for moles, bunnies, squirrels, you name it he’s looking for it. I can always tell because his feet will be caked with dirt and his thick snoot lol
Yup they have a high prey drive and my monster does the same thing.
Also I volunteer with a Shar-Pei rescue and we once had a pei that took forever to find a forever home because she kept taking out deer.
