Yeah, the tape subplot was more clear in the books. I can see how people missed it in the show.

It was extremely obvious on the show…they mention the tape like twenty times and bring specific attention to using it on the hazard suit.
In the book it's much clearer that the standard tape intentionally fails in the outside environment. In the show, although the tape is mentioned frequently, it's not as clear that the powers that be used poor tape on the suits intentionally. Part of that is how the show was structured and what the reveal was.
I guess I don’t feel like a science fiction show has to hold the hand of the audience, considering that as a genre science fiction generally expects the audience to be intelligent and pay attention to the story.

I thought the IT tape was too good and was sealing them in and they were suffocating on their own air. Where as the bad tape let air from the outside in so she didn’t pass out. That was my interpretation anyway way.

They show the greenery to trick those outcasted into cleaning the camera. This manipulates them because now they are excited/motivated to show those inside "the truth". Otherwise they probably wouldn't bother cleaning it.
That part still seems a bit silly since they KNOW exactly what the view inside is, it would be incredibly obvious it’s not just a matter of dirty lens. Definitely nitpicking though lol
I agree with you in a sense but imagine your in a suit you’ve never worn being sent to your immediate death in a territory you’ve never been in before. I think it’s also reasonable to assume someone in that position, seeing greenery on trees and birds, would lose all rationality for at least as long is it takes for the suit to deteriorate.

Human behavior is surprisingly predictable, but I will concede it’s not 100% predictable. Thinking about it, having a silo story whispered among the residents about ‘the one who didn’t clean’ would have really ratcheted up that tension.
I agree with the reasoning. But iit seems too convenient that everyone acts the exact same way, and everyone cleans the lens, rather than some forgetting and just wandering off.

the point is that a LOT of the folks sent out to "clean" already assume the view from the inside is FAKED, and they clean the camera in an effort to show people what they're seeing in their helmet
Another psychological reason for cleaning is that in the distance they can see a healthy, occupied city. They know that they cannot get back into the silo to tell anyone that the world is okay. And they think that they can just walk over to that city and live there happily. So as one last gift to the people that they're leaving behind, they clean.

They started as short stories he independently publicized for free on Kindle. The first story was called Wool but you can probably Google the Silo series by Hugh Howie and find them.

I second the rec to read the books. I read the trilogy earlier this year and absolutely loved it! Added bonus is that they have my favorite spines of all the books on my shelf.
It doesn’t look like anyone had answered the “why do the visors show the world as green when it’s really desolate?” - it’s to trick the cleaners into cleaning. So many cleaners go outside swearing they won’t clean but then they all do. Why? When they go out and see the greenery through the visor, they think that they have to show those still inside that it’s safe outside. I must make them see! I must clean so they can see! It’s all a farse.
That part still didn't make much sense to me. Like, the camera was dirty, not disabled. They know what it looks like from inside, it's clearly not the same image.
I could maybe see it as like, a once in a generation thing, when it's super dirty, people have never seen anything else, never seen it cleaned, etc... The shock could be a lot. But Holston? There's no way someone who just saw it cleaned and was already suspicious of shit is going for that.
Because the person in the suit is motivated by spite, not altruism. They don't want to give the people in the silo hope, they want to give them a good view of the lie that is keeping them trapped and the person in the suit thinks they've escaped from.
They are also dying during this time. Lack of oxygen / toxic air causing a state of euphoria.
There's not much indication at all that any of them are suffering by this point, they all seem to hold up just fine until they get out there a bit.
The other reply about them doing it out of a spite is a bit more interesting, but same sort of issue in that it's just too absolute. Does any given excuse make some of the time? Sure. But for "they always clean"? Can't say I'm seeing it.

Most of them live a very siloed existence from a knowledge, skillset and experience perspective, they really wouldn’t know how cameras work. They understand that world view up top isn’t real or a window, but how it works is beyond their understanding.
I’d seek out and read the original stories. They’ve been collected into a volume and are available wherever you get your books. I prefer the hard physical copies in this case b/c it’s a good read and I like to mark my place. The first short story is a masterpiece of science fiction with an ending that will make you think.
Can someone answer this Why in the name of god if the only way to travel in your world is a spiral staircase would people not keep to the right while going up or down . They are spread all over it ! They could paint arrows!

The lack of elevators is on purpose, to keep people more tired and isolated by floor

I highly recommend the first book — the first half of it is very similar to the series —, and only recommend the second for lore, as it's not very good. The third: steer clear of it.

Because this usually makes people clean the sensor outside as they want everyone else to see it. Which is why its such a guarded secret from people who aren't going outside. Because it makes them think the outside world is safe. So, they may do something stupid like open the hatch and kill everyone.

Haven't read the books, but I'm assuming if one silo develops some kind of sickness, or a virus, its better for only one silo to get destroyed. Plus, other silos may know the existence of other silos. But, the records were destroyed to prevent people from trying to go outside in our silo. So, that knowledge may have been mostly lost.

This subreddit adores this show and the books, so you will get downvoted to hell (and so probably will I), but I generally agree. I love Ferguson, sci-fi, and nice narratives about humans need for control in society; so I should’ve loved Silo. However, I found the pacing off, had issues with the characters, their motivations (and how they achieved those), and the generic dialogue so underwhelming. However, while I did enjoy the nice little twist at the end of the season, it’s not exactly a novel concept.
With all the praise it gets here, I often wonder if I was too critical… I have even considered reading Wool to see if I’m missing something.

Season 1 only covers the first half of the first book. With the characters and their motivations complaint; There's so much more story and unopened mystery boxes. Show watchers don't have enough information yet. Whether that's valid reasoning or not is up to you.
There's a line in the Fallout TV show that applies and says it best. "Everyone wants to save the world, we just disagree on how”.
I appreciate the insight. I wish it worked a little tighter narratively in a single season (i.e. Westwood S1), where it’s part of a larger story but still functions in a single season, though I guess that’s not really an analogous example.
I get what you mean. And even though it's half a book, it does split it at a natural point. I think you might actually be even more frustrated with the first book as it's basically entirely from Jules's point of view, unlike the show. It's not till the later books that you start to see the wider story that explains the motivations.
Either way. It's a good book series I recommend regardless.
Less stupid but a few things that happened in the last book made me wonder if one character is very very stupid.

That hooks are there, but they're often small and scattered so it's easy to lose momentum on your way to the next one.

There is the whole plot about the stolen tape. The reason the IT guys were after the missing tape was because it was specifically bad to make the suit not airtight, they were worried about people finding out and getting suspicious.
When Jule's friends used the good tape from maintenance it ensured her suit would be actually airtight, and she wouldn't die from the airborne poisons.
