Podcast listeners of Reddit what are your most recommended podcasts of all time? Thanks!
What is the podcast you recommend the most?
General Podcast DiscussionsThis was the podcast that got me into podcasts. Really interesting insights on life in prison, great chemistry between the hosts.
Yes, definitely in my top 3! Hey checkout the Street TV podcast for an episode, I think you may like it!
Ohh yes! Thank you :D
The Memory Palace. The Anthropocene Reviewed. Everything Is Alive.
All small, bite-sized delights.
These are the shows I consistently recommend:
Cold - true crime
Bundyville: The Remnant - true crime & religion/cults
In Our Time - history & science
History Extra podcast - history
The Sunday School Dropouts - religion & comedy
The Subway Portraits - short non-fiction monologues about riding the NYC subway
The Fall of Civilizations - history
The Grandma's Virginity Podcast - comedy
Poppy Hillstead Has Entered The Chat - comedy
Whatever Happened to Pizza at McDonald's - investigative journalism
Thank you for putting a small description for your recommendations!
The other responses which simply give the name of a podcast would be helpful if they also said a little bit about what they're about.
I'm interested in new content. But not so much that I'm going to spend a big chunk of time to look up each of the recommendations in this post just to find out what they're about (especially when I won't subscribe to 80% of them).
Big vote for poppy
Cold.
Hunting Warhead.
Very disturbing but great
It was short-lived, but “Mystery Show”
It ended but still super worth the listen
But you'll be sad because no other podcast will ever scratch that itch
Agreed. Heavyweight is similar in some ways, and is another great podcast.
The belt buckle episode
Criminal
Same.
Valley Heat. It’s hilarious and really something special.
Second series just came out yesterday or so. Looking forward to it
Apparently the next ep of s2 is dropping as early (or, late) as this week!
The Glass Cannon Podcast
Old Gods Of Appalachia
My Brother My Brother and Me
The Adventure Zone
The Ongoing History of New Music
Old gods of Appalachia is gold!
Highly recommend the lovecraft investigations from the BBC, this and old gods are two of my faves.
Yeah, it’s smashing. Love Old Gods too. The Magnus Archives is pretty good too, although I prefer Old Gods.
Edit: The Black Tapes is also a really good horror/supernatural podcast.
I couldn’t hear the narrator when I tried the old gods of Appalachia, did anyone else have that issue? Maybe it was the episode I tried but the effects and music was blazingly compared to the narrator.
Hello from the magic tavern!
Darknet diaries, and the pod called quest.
Dd has such good story taking and is about hacking.
The pod called quest is an actual play pathfinder show, but the players are so damn good. I am swear they must be professional actors, or maybe they are all in the drama club in highschool or college. They are serious, but also comical but not like everyone is trying to be funny. Seriously so good.
Darknet Diaries is great! The fact that the host has been able to create hundreds of compelling episodes just shows how underreported infosec is in the news.
And he's just adorable when he gets all worked up about privacy.
You should check out The Glass Cannon Podcast.
Yeah I listen to them. They are a solid group. Pcq is much better imo.
It might just be the characters though. I'm not a huge fan of jimmer, or Nestor. They just don't add that much to the story. Pembrook had so much more flavor. Four bears s such an interesting character to bring in, but I enjoyed dalgreath save sir Will much more as a character the team was interacting with.
I haven't gotten into their extra content. They are incredible players though, definitely worth listening to.
Tre is a top quality gm. The pcq gm is every bit as good, but not as goofy.
Check it out if you are looking for a 1e podcast.
Love Darknet diaries ! And used to loooove Reply all. Like their early episodes are awesome
- Your Undivided Attention
- The Last Archive
- Darknet Diaries
- Into the Zone
- Hidden Brain was good back when it was more about neuroscience and less about self-help
- Revisionist History was good back when it released its own episodes instead of just cross posting episodes of other Pushkin podcasts
Nice one for highlighting Your Undivided Attention. I sometimes feel it's the one I most wish more people would listen to.
Right? It's hands down the most important podcast out there
Stuff You Should Know
It’s just two respectable, friendly dudes having an informative discussion about literally anything. They’re one of the very first podcasts and honestly I think they’ve just stumbled on a format that’s undeniable.
I like that one too. Been listening for years.
I like the stuff you should know podcast but I have trouble finding the best episodes, since there are so many. Any good suggestions?
I personally just go for whatever topics sound interesting to me at the time. Even the “bad” episodes are usually entertaining because Chuck and Josh have so much fun with them. the Tug of War episode is a good recent example, they crack each other up making jokes about what a bad topic it is the whole time. I also always enjoy the ones that are analyses of very specific incidents or cases. Like project Azorian, the Flannan Isles mystery, hotel Cecil, and y2k. But it’s hard to go wrong with just about any topic, I like the ones about really broad topics like tacos or cookies also.
The one on soda!
I love the one on the Lewis and Clark expedition (there should be a movie about Sacajawea, she was a serious badass). I also recommend any live episodes. The Simpsons was a great episode too.
Yes, the easy chemistry is so easy to listen to.
Dan Carlins Hard Core History
Darknet Diaries
Stephen Frys Leap Years
Sceptics Guide to the Universe (SGU)
Cautionary tales
I Don't Know About That with Jim Jefferies
4/6 We have very similar taste, I guess. I must check the other two! Thanks for sharing
King Falls AM. It's over now and towards the end it was meh but the first 60ish episode's were fantastic.
I remember finding it at episode 3 and loved so much about it and then it just hit a wall and the quality dipped so hard
This is Actually Happening
Welcome to Nightvale
I know people say it a lot, but Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend
Conan is amazingly good with his off-beat, irrelevant, self-deprecating, and witty humour. His guests are usually good too, but it's really about Conan.
My favourites are
Athletico Mince. The Parapod.
There’s only one Peter Beardsley
The Parapod (only podcast to have me crying with laughter) and Hunting Warhead (shocking content, but eye-opening.)
Heavyweight
Why tho?
My go-to recommendation for anyone with a heart who is interested in getting into podcasts. Other than going Spotify-exclusive, it’s just a perfect pod.
Yes!!! Me tooo!
This American Life. It’s the best
Casefile, Cold, Invisible Choir.
Wooden Overcoats
Criminal. Fantastic little show with great stories, soundtrack and host.
Yes, the story telling is amazing! I don't know how she gets regular people to tell such interesting stories, and it's produced so well.
The Anthropocene Reviewed
S Town
Shocked no one has said doughboys. They review chain restaurants.
If the back catalog isn't Spotify-only yet you should download old Reply All episodes they have some all-time bangers.
Don't bother with anything after The Case of The Missing Hit though.
Tim Dhillon
Oh my gawd…not to be missed…if you haven’t already…S Town. Love ❤️ this podcast.
My Dad Wrote A Porno
It’s so good. The banter between the hosts is great as well. Everyone who I know who has listened loves it.
This is over rated. I listened to it for two episodes and didn’t like it at all. Way too much irritating laughing.
Agreed. They're also those typical London cool people, constantly ironic and never sincere. An extremely irritating modern subculture
Thank you for saying this. 🥇
Anything with over the top fake laughing is an immediate unsubscribe & delete the download for me. Knowledge Fight? Jesus christ, why not just listen to a sitcom laugh track on repeat. I would love to listen to a show where people nitpick and tear apart Alex Jones, but not that one!
What is it about? (although the title says a lot 😂)
Nationalpark After Dark (Start with „Night of the Grizzlies“!)
Necronomipod (only if you can deal with very dark humour)
Fall of Civilizations
The Adam Buxton Podcast.
A very warm and often hilarious interview podcast with a wide array of guests hosted by a man who's clearly found his niche after a pretty long career in show business.
While Buxton clearly puts a lot of work into the show, it mostly seems effortlessly relaxed and funny and inspires the kind of devotion that makes not-very-online people like myself feel *obliged* to post comments like this. I listen to quite a lot of podcasts, but if I were forced to choose just one to keep, it would be this one.
Here are my current faves by genre, with an asterisk on those that also happen to be hilarious :D
History / sociology / culture podcasts:
American Hysteria by Chelsea Weber-Smith.
Behind the Bastards by Robert Evans. *
Code Switch and Throughline by NPR.
Decoder Ring by Slate Podcasts.
You're Wrong About by Sarah Marshall and Michael Hobbes. *
Eating for Free by Joan Summers and Matthew Lawson (they talk about mostly pop culture). *
Violating Community Guidelines with Brittany Broski and Sarah Schauer (two comedians explore weird corners of the internet). *
Darknet Diaries by Jack Rhysider (it's about hacking and the dark web).
Noble Blood (great stories about historical royal families).
Science podcasts:
Ologies by Alie Ward.
Gastropod by Cynthai Graber and Nicola Twilley.
Maintenance Phase by Aubrey Gordon and Michael Hobbes. *
Radiolab by WNYC Studios. As an audio archivist, I particularly loved their series "Mixtape" on the history of the audiocassette.
Gathering Gold by Sheryl Paul and Victoria Russell (it's a self-help / mindfulness podcast that is really calming).
Short Wave by NPR.
News / political podcasts:
Democracy Now!
The New York Times' The Daily
Up First by NPR.
What a Day by Crooked Media.
Reply Guys by Kate Willett and Julia Claire. *
Deconstructed and Intercepted by the Intercept.
Citations Needed by Nima Shirazi and Adam Johnson.
Investigative podcasts:
The Lazarus Heist by BBC World Service (it's about North Korean hackers).
Megacorp by Jake Hanrahan (it's about how fucked up Amazon is).
My Year in Mensa by Jamie Loftus (it's about the toxic Mensa society).
Lolita Podcast by Jamie Loftus (it's about the book Lolita and its influence in pop culture).
Sweet Bobby by Tortoise Media (it's about a very skilled catfisher).
Fake Heiress by BBC Radio 4 (it's about fraudster Anna Delvey).
Radiolab, always something interesting to learn!
Additionally, radiolab made a series called The Other Lati which is about 6-7 episodes. I truly think it is one of the best podcasts I have ever heard!
Very Bad Wizards
99% invisible
It's a design/architecture/ history podcast. Probably heard of it, but it's honestly worth a listen.
One of my favorites. I really dig Roman Mars's personality & thoughtful dialogue.
Being well. Like a hug from a loving dad.
In the red clay
I just started this one this week. I've lived in Georgia all my life and never heard of this story before!
The Bill Simmons podcast.
used to LOVE him and the book of basketball thing he did, either i burnt myself out on him or heard too many rough takes
SuperMega Podcast and The Magnus Archives.
Stuff You Should Know
Conflicted, the two hosts are interesting, entertaining and have amazing life stories that they use to describe conflicts of the Middle East. They are both very knowledgeable and address many points that were unknown to me from a western point of view.
Check out Fear and Loathing in New Jerusalem if you like this topic
Thanks I’ll check it out!
The Other Latif. At some point I nearly cried
Radical empathy. If you liked the videos of the YouTube channel called Jubilee you must hear their podcast on hearing people with different opinions.
My brother my brother and me
Morbid: A True Crime Podcast
That's my favorite one !
Came here to say this
The white vault Old gods of Appalachia The Magnus Archives And for a casual background “noise” or just whatever: Let’s read podcast

Lately I have been listening to Stuff You Should Know.
Stuff they don't want you to know is good too
Not Another DnD podcast.
Truly is the best actual play podcast I have listened to which just started their 3rd full length campaign last week. It stars Emily Axford, Brian Murphy, Jake Hurwitz and Caldwell Tanner all of College Humor fame.
It definitely is on the silly side so if you are expecting grit and drama this is not the place but for all of the jokes the show also has an incredible amount of heart
Behind The Bastards. Feels like a mix of live news and history I was never told.
Last Podcast on the left. On the Edge with Andrew gold. The Art of Manliness The No Sleep Podcast
WTF is about as good as it gets.
WTF is one of the main reasons I got hooked on podcasts.
Still Processing
I really like the Has-Beens, about college hockey from ex national champs and general funny life stories
I really enjoy This is Love, Poetry Unbound, and The Wild

Darknet Diaries
Welcome to night vale
Blindboy
The Dollop. Starting from the beginning. American history podcast with a couple of comedians. One of them tells a story from American history to the other who has funny reactions and often gets into voices/accents of characters from the story and role plays them and it's really funny and really educational. They use really good sources.
Still one of the funniest history Podcasts. Granted, It was slightly better back in the day when Dave would regularly "destroy" Garreth emotionally with appalling examples of how truly horrible people can be. But in a funny way.
I thought you were going to say "by calling him Gary" lol they don't really do that bit anymore.
Yep. Always made me laugh. Saw them a few years back live. The whole crowd chanting "Gary! Gary!!" as they took the stage. Was a fun show.
Stuff They Don't Want You To Know.
Welcome to Nightvale and Risk!
Risk!!! This is the show that got me listening to podcasts. When I was in undergrad and grad school and was making weekly 3 hour drives home and back I would listen to this and never get tired of all the stories I’d hear. They do a good job of mixing enough serious ones in with some more funny, light hearted ones so that’s it’s not too depressing and not too serious.
Timesuck with Dan Cummins. It’s a deep dive biography / history / paranormal podcast hosted by a hilarious, yet thoughtful and empathetic comedian. Every episode focuses on something new and the range is clearly wide, but it’s always a fun, incredibly informative ride.
3 out of 5 stars. Wouldn’t change a thing!

- The Adventure Zone
- David Tennant Does a Podcast
- McGillicuddy and Murder's Pawnshop
- Dungeons and Daddies*
\ not a BDSM podcast)
I'm subscribed to dungeons and daddies and I've listened to every episode but GOD DAMN do they do that "laughing-super-hard-at-every-single-joke-because-we-want-it-to-sound-funnier" thing too much. It's honestly really annoying.

I adore Science vs. Fiction by Scott Weinberg and Steven DeGennaro, where they talk about Science Fiction movies and break down the science for accuracy, but also for whether it even matters.

It's a hilarious once-a-week show from two of the best comedy writers in the business.
Small World Podcast. It just came out like last week though.
Fuckface.
very bad wizards
Heaving Bosoms
The subject matter (reviewing romance novels) may not be to everyone’s taste but the hosts Melody & Erin have a beautiful friendship and they make me feel like I am part of it too. They are funny & supportive & real. They tell it like it is. They call out thing that need calling out & support things that need support. Such a delight to listen too.
There are three or four that I consistently recommend:
This Podcast Will Kill You is the most recommended
This is a Disaster is a newer one to me that I find myself recommending a lot.
And I’m a book lover, so I recommended Harry Potter and the Sacred Text and Myths and Legends pretty consistently too.

Criminal and Ologies
Heavyweight all the way. My favourite piece of media, not just fave podcast, for the past couple years.
In The Dark, seasons 1 and 2, but particularly 2.
Recently I have been recommending the Inspired Unemployed.
My main recommendation for years has been the Elis James and John Robins podcast (radio x and now BBC 5 Live). These guys feel like my best friends. I've listened to them for about 7 years. The pod isn't as funny as it was back in the radio x days but I'm not sure I could ever stop listening.
This is important, bad friends, short history of, two bears one cave
Serial killers, cults, darknet diaries, redweb, stuff they don't want you to know, and ridiculous history.
Real ass podcast
Both Much Happens. It seriously puts me right to sleep every time and I’ve never experienced regularly falling asleep quickly in my life.
For one that isn’t for sleeping, probably Spilled Milk.
