PlayStation Generated Nearly $700M Revenue From First Party Releases On PC & Other Platforms During 2023
Newshonestly as a die hard souls fan bloodbourne was meh in some aspects. platinum ed it as well. the story was good, the combat ahead of is time, but god there is some of the worst level designs and story progression in that game imo
i mean, what i said is actually true. critics of the time said the same. i love the game, but it needs a remake to make it the perfect souls game
It just ain’t the popular public opinion and I’m biased in its favor. Love the lovecraftian lore and design.
Bloodborne is the best Souls game imo. Worst level design? Bro what are you smoking.
Bloodborne is probably one of the best exclusives though.
Edit: Why all the downvotes?
Nice! And people still think I’m crazy for saying Sony will eventually have their own PC store. Without steams giant cut this is over a billion dollars made.
They could keep their games on steam but sell at their own store 15% cheaper and still make more money without losing the steam loyalists.
That's a breach of Steams TOS as far as I'm aware; if you sell a game on Steam as well as other storefronts on PC the price has to be the same to prevent Valve from losing out.
If you spot during Steam sales that games are cheaper elsewhere than on Steam, it's because the marketplace is the one who's cutting the price not the developer or publisher.
That's for Steam keys.
If you generate Steam keys for your game you keep 100% of the money if you sell through your own website but the rule is you have to give Steam store customers a similar discount & fair pricing within a timeframe if you're using their services. You can't just setup your own shop that uses Steam and cut Valve out.
If you're just putting the game on Steam among other launchers you can price the other launchers however you want.
Nah. EA, GOG, Epic, and others constantly do their own sales while the Steam prices remain unchanged.
It may be against the ToS to permanently have them at a lower price, but to instead have them on sale most of the time is effectively the same thing.
Hmm didn’t know that. How about giving back store credit? Like epic does.
If they cut the price then what’s the point of cutting out Steam
Steam gets 30%. If they cut out steam and drop the price 15%, that still leaves them with 15% more than what they get with steam.
Steam does not take 30% if you hit a certain amount of sales. Also bigger publishers like Sony make deals with valve so that 30% you would have to pay is not the same deal Sony would get
Only thing I've noticed over the years, STEAM is much better at updating old games and making them playable on newer systems. AND YES, there are a couple I couldn't finish but haven't checked to see if STEAM fixed the bug. I now have games on ps3 that won't run unless I turn off the update internet process at start up. So maybe having the same game on STEAM is better in the long run.
They could but it won’t happen. Pc players have no interest in another store. PC players have proven they have no interest in going to Sony. Sony must come to them.
Absolutely. With the PSN requirement for some of their games, got a feeling it will eventually migrate over fully. Just a hunch though.
And people still think I’m crazy for saying Sony will eventually have their own PC store.
There's a vocal community who will never buy games off of steam, but I fully expect the big IP to eventually leave it. EA came back because they went after subscriptions (EA play) so steam sales mattered less but Ubisoft are gone and I expect others to cut out steam sooner or later.
Which sucks, because Steam is better then all their launchers.
I expect others to cut out steam sooner or later.
Bro...
Microsoft/EA/Ubi(delayed releases)/Blizzard/Activision/Bethesda, all HAD left and now came back.
Which others you expect to cut out? All the big boys that left, are crawling back in. Where did you even get this idea.
Microsoft/EA/Ubi(delayed releases)/Blizzard/Activision/Bethesda, all HAD left and now came back.
Microsoft is pushing game pass and 3 of those companies are owned by them. Do you seriously not expect game pass exclusives?
I don't understand what this have to do with others moving away from Steam?
Others is just Microsoft? Ok MS might give exclusives to gamepass once they start feeling good about their sub numbers.
But i still don't understand how you came to think "others cutting steam sooner or later" when this happened years ago, and now they are all returned.
Ubisoft isn’t gone from Steam, they just release their games on Epic first then release on Steam later.
The momentum right now is actually on big publishers coming back to Steam, not leaving it. Since games just do not sell as well on other storefronts.
Imagine if you could play all your ps store games on pc.
Plus makes them less reliant on PS5 hardware
A massive cut of this is MLB the show on Xbox Gamepass, that’s why it says and other platforms
The day you can only buy their games on their own store only is the day I stop buying their PC ports.
I have all my games on steam (600ish) and hate splitting them up through different launchers. It's why I stopped buying ubisoft amd ea games unless I can buy them on steam. I don't mind at all if they launch through a background launcher if their tied to my steam library.
That seems… risky. All your eggs in one basket.
I've had my account for a little over 20 years. Everything is organized and in one place. I doubt Valve will go bust anytime soon.
I just hate having multiple launchers and having to keep track of games and accounts.
It will struggle. Every single PC store struggles compared to steam. No one can create such a good service like them. Don't is smart to stop trying to be Mr resistant and realize where the industry is going. Which is all working together and on PC or cloud. That's where it's going. Handheld PC has exploded. They don't even allow people to play their new games on their own cloud service. They should be in GeForce now as an option.
I think if Sony really does want to get into the pc market they will make a good store. They already have a good outline for one on their own hardware.
They are part owner in the epic store. There's no way another store will thrive. All of them struggle as is because steam is so good. If they really wanna get into the oc market they need to stop struggling with the reality of how the market is. The days of having multiple exclusive systems coming to a slow end. It's why they have been slowly putting their games on PC. Should be on all platforms and not just steam. GeForce now is growing at a rapid rate, anyone that doesn't have games on it is losing out on a big market.
That’s loser mentality. Sony can leverage their exclusive titles to move people to there store if they want to. But what I think will really happen is Sony will make their own ps pass and create a store similar to Xbox for it but will sell new games while price on steam. That way their gamepass won’t embezzle their game sales
You can do both. Every publisher who tried to punish Steam by creating their own store saw huge drops in sales. Definitely not enough to make up for the gain in having your own store.
But it's obvious that they're going to announce day and date PC releases.
This includes Destiny 2 on PC/Xbox
MLB the show on Xbox consoles + Nintendo Switch
That's pre Helldivers 2 too.
Might crack a billion in 24.
It’s not entirely pre HD2. The title states 2023, but it means Sony’s fiscal year 2023, which ended march 31, 2024. So about 2 months of HD2 sales on PC is included in that number.
It includes the sales revenue of Helldivers 2.
Its nice but how much of that revenue was profits. All the layoffs these few years was top earning games that cost way too much to make.
Most of it? this are already made games. Games that were made on PC already and are just being ported to play on windows. I doubt they are spending hundreds of million to port a game.
That's not how it works. We have no idea how much these projects cost, especially since MLB is released on PC, Xbox and Switch. That's 3 different versions they work on. Destiny releases on 2 platforms. It's not simple port work.
Just porting Ratchet to PC cost them 2.5 million.
https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/18mpilz/playstation_games_pc_port_budgets_revealed/
Listen to yourself. One game cost them 2.5M we can imagine the rest are in the same ballpark. So even if they ported 10 games that’s just 25M spent for a 700 revenue
Porting single player games in particular helps them out big time in sales. On PC there's a huge gap of big AAA single player games because Valve doesn't make as many games as they used to, and even when they did it was more online centric games. PC has alot more live service games than consoles with League of legends, wow, valorant, CS, Dota, Tarkov etc.
That's why I feel the big traditional Playstation single player games do extremely well on PC, because they definitely fill a big weakness for PC, the only big single player games they get are 3rd party ones thats it really.
Also a live service game like helldivers benefits from more players, live service games obviously live and die from their player bases. Limiting to just ps5 would put helldivers to such a disadvantage especially when live service games all have some indirect competition with each other for players time and money.
the only big single player games they get are 3rd party ones thats it really.
I mean, when a PS game releases on PC, that's a 3rd party as well lol
Sure they technically are, but you know what I meant. PC doesn't really have any exclusive big AAA single player games at all that are specifically made to take advantage of pc hardware and features, its only pc exclusivelive service games you see like Valorant. The only big aaa single player games are the third party ones like Cyberpunk, thats why there was a such a huge market gap and why Playstation single player games do so well
BG III was a rare exception to the rule, but it did so well it would have been leaving money on the table for larian to not port the game to consoles if they didn't.
Yup this is a very good point too, the biggest AAA singleplayer games on Steam currently really are mainly the PlayStation titles
The vast majority of most played PC games otherwise are online and live service games
Horizon Zero Down made buy a PS5 because I was yearning those type of games. to bad they take almost half a decade to make now making the ps5 useless for the foreseeable future but oh well GOW 4 and 5 GOT and plenty of old ps4 games I never played made it worth it.
If they keep this up. I can see them having their own steam store in a way.
Hell yeah
That's not a lot...
That's revenue, not profit and it includes things like MLB on Xbox, Nintendo and PC.
$700m is a lot in this context. It’s practically free additional profit porting/releasing things on other platforms.
This is on top of what they already generated from PS5 sales.
You cannot simply press the "port to PC button". A lot of work gets into this and sometimes not enough, like with TLoU. So it's definitely not "practically free".
Of course not. But they are not costing hundreds of millions of dollars. Likely 5-10m tops per port. Seems like a no brainer, I’d be shocked if they exceeded 100m in porting costs across the board.
I agree but I just wanted to say it's just not for "free". I am always shocked at how much money is burned with advertising too... Some games heavily rely on big servers... etc. So the profit shrinks quite a bit.
Keep em coming!
I only play PlayStation games on steam deck dock to my TV Nintendo switch style. It was the best decision I ever made
Do most games work or do you have to fiddle around with settings? I'm very interested in getting a steam deck but i suck at configuring things
I didn't downvote him, and I'm a bit torn on what side of the argument I'm on (I play games on both PC and PS5).
I believe time limited exclusivity helps Sony move consoles and sell games on their platform. Case in point, over two years ago I bought a PS5 after playing Horizon Zero Dawn on Steam and I didn't want to wait a year or more to play the sequel. I liked the experience so much that I now game a lot more on the PS5 and have bought other games as well as the subscription. This would not have happened if Forbidden West had been released on PC at the same time. I'd not own a PS5 and I'd not have spent money on their store and services.
On the other hand, I do think it is good that first party games eventually become available on other systems too. There's no reason to leave the money on the table, and it allows more people to enjoy those games. Most of Sony's first party games are high quality products.
I see what you mean. The people that are gonna play on playstation will always play on that console over PC either way, and the pc players thst haven't bought a ps console won't either, so I kinda feel like there's no console sales to lose or gain at this point. But they financial results of the first party ip sales on the platforms shows that there is a helluva demand for them and bring in lots and lots of sales!
For me personally I'd just rather have everything available to purchase on steam and no longer have a playstation, but that's a personal thing.
I want Sony to make games. For that they need to make money. If PC and remasters is their way to make money then that's fine.
I also don't like exclusivity.
I also don't like exclusivity.
You'd be one of the few it seems then. Which is so weird cause i remembe just a few years ago people complaining about exclusives.
Maybe it's because I grew up with Sega consoles and always wished I could play the Nintendo games. Idk
Even now, when there's hardly any xbox game I really want to play and the pc exclusive games I'd like to play are also just a handful, I still don't like when people don't get to experience a game just because they got a different machine. I have a switch, actually I have 2, and now I get to play Nintendo games.
Gonna need more.
Not profit right?
Sounds like it’s time to fire all the developers and kill the studios
Get on the bus Sony. Yes sit next to Xbox in the back
Too bad Sony stopped making games for PlayStation. Year 2024 must be the worst year for PlayStation exclusives in a decade
Sony published Helldivers 2, Rise of the Ronin and Stellar Blade already this year and got FFVII Rebirth as a PS5 exclusive
Day n Date incoming
The end of PlayStation consoles?
Time for day 1 PC release
That's never going to happen. All of the Sony developed video games are going to be delayed.
SCEA likes making hardware if not PlayStation then it'll be an Android powered Vita successor that is built off cell phone hardware.
Yes, the end of Playstation consoles.
I think we are going to see more on Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2. Im not talking about The Last of Us, Spiderman or stuff like that, but i think the live service games are going to arrive on both platforms after a period of exclusivity. It dosent make much sense to limit yourself after the exclusivity-hype period has died.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is a very special post and not in a good way.
You'll see. The gaming market is changing. Some titles makes sense as an exclusive. Some dosent.
Obligatory bloodborne comment
