Now that summer has come around and its gonna be 90⁰+ for a while, what temperature is your thermostat on. In my house, it's kept at 72⁰-75⁰ all day long.
People worry too much, personally I would rather spend the extra $100/month to have the AC at 69 instead of 73. Tennessee born and raised, there’s nothing like coming in from 90+ to some sub-70s AC

Yes! Usually a AC unit only cools 20 degrees lower than the temp outside.
Since this seems to happen every year, maybe they should upgrade the grid with some of that money we give them every month.
It’s almost like scientists have predicted the very circumstances we’re in for, idk, 70 years? Our cities have had ample opportunity to upgrade their grids. Hell the fact the Fed isn’t forcing it is downright crazy to me
the nes is a public service. it’s not exactly operating at a profit. the board serves without pay. the cost of electric here is considerably affordable compared to many cities where electric is privately run. i consider myself fortunate that we have access to one of the largest publicly operating electric services in the us. while i agree that the grid could use updates, people also need to understand basic concepts like the tragedy of the commons. humans lived without central cooling for the majority of civilization. i think we can survive setting our units at more manageable temps.
This is a great point, we pay $0.12 per kWh. Many parts of the country pay double that or more.
Profit has nothing to do with investment in its own infrastructure. Profit is what’s left over afterward. Maybe raise prices a bit and do some upgrades, it’s not a hard equation.

they raise the prices that people are already saying are too expensive to upgrade the grid so that people can continue to keep their homes at temps 30 below the feels like outside. then, because of the overuse, the outside temps continue to rise past 110 everyday, and people are still attempting to keep their homes in the 60s. the power system will still break down, and we will be in an endless loop of this cycle. it is not a high horse to want to have a semblance of a naturally symbiotic ecosystem in the future.

Spouse and I are both multigenerational Nashville native, always lived in old-ass 90+ year old houses, 75° is usually fine in the summer for both of us. But for some reason it’s absolutely slaughtering me this year. We have a lot of west and southwest facing windows that bring a ton of sunshine in, but, like that’s not new for us. Idk, maybe I’m just really getting old or something (45yo). Either way, NES now owns every single penny I can make, I expect them to show up demanding our first-born any day now, and I’m still boiling.

That works if you live in an apartment, but in a house/over 1500 sq ft or so your power bill would be 5-6 hundred dollars.
That's highly dependent on how well-insulated the structure is, and how efficient the equipment is. Spray foam, Low-E windows, and properly-installed and -serviced 14 SEER equipment (with a mister on the condenser) will get you $200 NES bills on 2500 sqft in August, with the thermostat set at 72 during the day and 67 at night.
I’m not complaining but we have two units we run at 68 degrees for 3,900 square feet and the bill rarely breaks $200
Mine is set at 68 year round power bull is never over 220 1400sq ft house.
But if you set it to 73 the power bill is 400-500… it’s worth the extra hundred a month to not sweat in your house when you come in from cuttin grass
This is not the slightest bit true. We keep our house at 74° when we’re home and 72° at night, and our bill for a just-over-2000 sq ft home rarely goes over $200. We could certainly go down to 73° and get nowhere near that amount.

Damn. My power is $120 a month on 1800 square feet running AC at 68 max 24/7 non-stop. Never been higher than this price.
I even run it when I’m traveling. Wine fridge is also always running and lights are set to 24 hours on inside with outdoor lights in overnight automatically.

We would probably live in the 78-80 range but our large, fluffy dogs like to run and play inside too so we live at 72-75 (wearing coats) to accommodate the babies. I'm not sure how anyone can be living with their air at 68 I would probably die.

74 downstairs and 68 upstairs. All the bedrooms are on the second floor. Obviously, we like the bedrooms colder at night. We tried keeping it warmer during the day and only setting the temp low during bedtime hours, but the amount of power it takes to cool the space back down after letting it warm up is a total wash compared to just keeping. It that way all the time.

I find it's much more about humidity and air flow vs actual temperature. If my system is set to 78 when it's 80 outside I would die, but when it's 95+ it feels fine. This is because the unit is working enough that the humidity is kept low and the air is being circulated. I also use ceiling fans when needed.

My husband and I have come to a peace agreement that the AC will be set at 75 and no lower. I still have to wear a sweater in the house. When he does overnight deliveries or housesits for his nephew, I turn the the AC to 78-80 where I'm comfy.

I keep mine at 75, I have two huge Bradford pear trees in my front yard that shade most of my house. They’re invasive and they stink in the spring but I am thankful for them.
We keep it on 76° while we’re gone to work, and it drops to 74° when we return home. That way we’re not pushing it as hard during the hottest part of the day when we’re not there for it to matter anyway. We’d go higher but then it would have to work too hard to pull the temp down in the late afternoon and end up costing us just as much. We keep it on 72° at night.
