I'm currently watching Blonde and tho it's kiiindaa interesting this movie just went way over the point of already ending. So much unnecessary things in it to make it longer. Yesterday I watched Nightmare Alley which was pretty long too but atleast every second was spent on character building and story telling I don't know what this is. What movie in your opinion is just too damn long?

The filmmakers seem to have aimed the film at an audience that may not have heard of Pearl Harbor, or perhaps even of World War Two.
He did the same shit with Midway, which was disappointing. If he had just basically updated the 70s Midway with modern cinematography, it would have been great, but he made it way too long and tried to fit way too much into it.
Also, the writing was so bad. One of the most disappointing movies I’ve ever seen.
Midway 2019? That was Roland Emmerich, a different guy from Michael Bay.
Ugh, Midway is seriously triggering for me because, somehow, they made what was a wildly improbable and extremely important victory seem *less* impressive than reality. Like, on paper, there's no way the US should have turned the tide as quickly as they did in the Pacific, but for a hefty dose of luck, a few bad decisions by the Imperial Navy, and a whoooole lot of pilots in aircraft barely able to carry their balls. An almost unbelievable historical event. A really average movie that somehow focused on the wrong things to build tension and interest.
Well and it’s frustrating that they focus so much on Layton (who was vital to Nimitz, don’t get me wrong) and Rochefort, who was a far more interesting and entertaining character barely gets a foot note in the movie. There’s two conceivable Midway movies you can make, and both of them could be interesting. You could focus on the intelligence coup that was our cracking the Japanese code (with a side story about Washington bureaucratic incompetence that ultimately cost Rochefort his job and a decoration for basically winning the battle for the US) or you could focus on the naval aviators and how they won against seemingly impossible odds. The original Midway from 1975 kind of did both, which is why I basically wanted to see a remake of that movie.
Midway was way better than Pearl Harbor though.
Midway had maybe my favorite line ever, when Dick Best is trying to find his friends remains and the doctor asks if there is anything that might distinguish him: “well, he had a ring from the Naval Academy”
Sir. You are on a NAVAL BASE. You can’t throw a fuckin’ chair without hitting someone from the Naval Academy. And yet somehow the doctor is able to take him directly to his friend? Just wild
Oh, yeah, definitely. My only real issue with Midway was how cliche the writing was. Like when Layton walks into the office and Kimmel says “there’s the guy who told us this was coming”
My grandfather never forgave the Japanese for Pearl Harbor until I told him Americans made that movie.

I remember when the movie came out and some old Pearl Harbor vet complained how phony the love story was:

The first WW is damn near a perfect super hero flick. Origin story and current day badassery all in one. The second is a complete POS in every way imo. The villain is a fucking evil genie. The second villain is a chick who likes cats and needs more attention. So dumb.
I still think Pedro Pascal could’ve been an actually good villain had he been the only villain and had it been more of a psychological movie. Instead we got Pedro trying to pull as much as he could out of one of the blandest characters imaginable. I don’t even wanna talk about Cheetah. That was just an abomination.

The absolutely only redeeming thing in that movie was Flag freeing all of the Suicide Squad and Boomerang just immediately bolting. It’s the only bit of actual solid character work that keeps it in-line with the comics. Everything else is unadulterated garbage except for that one moment. It’s also incredibly hilarious.
Don’t try and argue for other scenes, I will not accept them.

I hated the scene where they're walking down the street just getting to know each other. Reminds me of the scene from Game of Thrones where they're walking north to get a white walker. That whole episode is just garbage.
The first Suicide Squad movie was the worst movie I've ever seen in my life. It shouldn't have even started.
Me and my friends watched it at the cinema and we were all laughing so hard we were crying.
Just the way killer croc goes into the sewers alone is a+ comedy, even if it’s entirely unintentional.

My favorite is when they introduce a squad member last minute when they are stepping into the heicopter to go to the mission, like "Oh btw this is Jim, he climbs walls". Then he dies two scenes later.

I never understood how they were fun, the fight scenes happen so fast, and are so fucking zoomed in, you can’t even tell what the fuck is happening. All you hear is the sound of grinding metal the whole time
I tapped out at the third one, I didn't know that a movie about giant robots fighting each other could be so fucking boring.
Worst movie I’ve ever seen in theatres. Inexcusable to make a movie that bad that long.
The best part of watching that movie in theaters was at the end where Prime uses rocket boots that he could have used at literally any point just so he could dramatically fuck off into space. Someone yelled "He had those the whole fucking time?!?" and the theater went nuts.
Army of the Dead was too long with not enough actual zombies

I felt like it had no idea what it wanted to be. It seemed to be two or three good ideas/movies mashed into one extremely forgettable movie.
It Chapter Two. Like half of the movie was filler dream/nightmare scenes that contribute nothing to the movie.
This is the perfect example of a movie that needs to be edited in a different way. I think there is a movie in there that is as good as IT chapter one, it just needs to be pieced together differently
That’s because the book is structured completely different. The entire story is from the adult point of view and all of the parts with them as kids were flashbacks.
This comment is far too low down. The two timelines are told in parallel in the book, so the climax of the story in both the actual plot (them as adults) and the flashbacks (as kids) happen at roughly the same time in the book. But not much actually really… happens in the actual timeline of the characters (the “present” of them as adults.) Most of the really wild, iconic “IT” stuff happens in the flashbacks to their childhoods, and the adult timeline is just kinda… them trying to deal with their individual CPTSD from their various childhood traumas.
Which I think, to a certain extent is kind of the point of the book - everything feels a lot BIGGER and more important as a kid, because it’s all so unfamiliar and formative to who you are as a person, including the abuse you endure. The adult storyline is mostly a more grounded story of them trying to - mostly poorly - cope with the real-world abuse they each endured (which is anthropomorphized as Pennywise, but Pennywise isn’t inherently the trauma itself, just the creature feeding off it and exploiting it, and perpetuating the cycle of abuse.)
Damn this comment really captures how I feel about how well the book is written and why it's a shame that both iterations of the adult story fall flat in both versions of the films
There was talk for a while about the director making a super cut of both films together. It’s a shame it never was done.
Right? I felt the same after watching it. I'm convinced there's a gripping thriller in there but the entire thing is poorly structured and aimless. The main characters just seem to wander around town for the majority of the film, hoping for the various McGuffins to reveal themselves. The lack of intrigue is the films biggest weakness. Stuff just kinda happens.
The film would be much stronger if they kept the 'Who called me and why must I return to my hometown?' mystery going. The introduction of Mike and his briefing should have been held back.
In fact, the entire first half of the movie could follow the adult members of The Losers Club as they, individually, return and explore the town on the day of the meeting. We keep cutting between them and each member of the club has a disturbing encounter and, by happenstance, finds their McGuffin token without understanding its significance.
While exploring the town a few members of the club could run into eachother and reminisce about the past.
It's only at the midpoint that Mike reveals himself at the restaurant. He tells them that he made the call and explains the ritual that must be performed in order to banish Pennywise. Only then do the group learn that the Tokens they found have some kind of greater significance. Perhaps one is still missing and must be found on the way to the sewers.
With that tweak we have some intrigue to carry us through the first part of the movie and now the movie doesn't stall while the tokens are collected. I'm sure there's a bunch more structural changes that could be made. I actually quite like the overall idea of p2 (Confronting the past, Meeting childhood friends as adults etc) it just never quite managed to match the drama of the first film. It needed a few more drafts.
That was the problem with the book and miniseries too.
The adult part of the story is waaaay less interesting. The book deals with this by jumping back and forth.
It Part Two was guaranteed to be inferior from the get go.

That was a really disappointing movie. Part 1 set the bar high and this one didn't even come close. It had some good parts and the casting was great, but it fell flat compared to the first one. I was also pretty disappointed with the direction they went with Pennywise's "true form". Not near as cool as it could have been, being a cosmic lovecraftian horror and all. They could have done something insane but instead went the opposite route. I'd like to pretend Part 1 is the only one that exists.
And that was another reminder I still have to watch it.

I don’t think it was laughing too much that was the problem of Funny People; I actually enjoyed it but felt like the title was supposed to be ironic, in that comedians are fucked up people and their private lives are un-funny. It’s really as much drama as comedy, the people I know that disliked it were sitting around waiting for more laughs.
But it also did not need to be that long.

We were just talking about Peter Jackson's delightful King Kong over at r/TrueFilm, and that film even by the admission of its director is about 20 minutes too long.
From the time they get to the island to when they leave is the only reason I watch the movie. When they get back to the city is kind of boring, so I usually just do something else.
That dinosaur fighting scene still holds up so well, it’s incredibly tense.

He also loved Rampage because, again, giant monsters. Sometimes it’s hard to remember that not all movies are meant for adults even if they look realistic.
He also loves every single Star Wars movie. Space battles. Lightsaber battles. Pod racing. Giant monsters. You think he gives a shit about the nuances of exactly how Palpatine returned? Fuck no. But he loved watching him shoot lightning out of his fingers.
That movie was so much fun. I get bored easily and I didn’t think I was into big monster movies, but I really enjoyed Skull Island.
I feel like it is two movies. Both are good imo, but I didn't sign up for a king kong marathon.
Cut 40-60 minutes, polish up the dino cgi and you would have had another classic.
Edit: Just remembered - you can watch the 1933 original twice in the same amount of time. I like it myself, but I wish Jackson had made the aforementioned cuts and made the theatrical release the director's cut.

The Hobbit movies should’ve been one 2.5 hour movie. The entire second movie is filler with Smaug and Bilbo chatting.
I loved all the Smaug stuff in the second one. A lot of Laketown stuff and the dwarf/elf romance BS could have easily been cut out though.
The Smaug performance was fantastic, but it’s a bright shining thing floating in 3 movies worth of bad decisions and executive mismanagement.
And the forced romance plot
Poor Evangeline Lily made them promise that her character wouldn't be used for some stupid love triangle arch, and they went and did exactly that.
What's worse about that is supposedly the romance plot was filmed entirely during the reshoots.
Why does it hurt so much? Because it is terrible. That's why.
"Because it was real" was such a funny line, my wife and I still say it to each other on occasion.
Brought on by production getting delayed mid 2012 and no one thought to delay part 2 of 2 by another year. But no just split the second half into 2 movies and bloat the second movie with stuff no one asked for.

LOTR: 3 Books, each book is long and detailed, each book got one movie.
Hobbit: 1 book, relatively short children's book, split into 3 movies for some unknown fucking reason.
First one is a little too long too in my opinion, but nowhere near as bloated as the other two.

Ryan George's Pitch Meeting of the third Hobbit had a deft takedown of that character. What did he contribute? He had no arc, no redemption, just a ton of screen time focused on his tedious antics. He didn't drive the plot forward or reveal anything about the other characters. I suppose the intention was that he be comic relief, but surely one or more of the underdeveloped dwarf characters whom we'd been following since the first movie could have fulfilled that role.

Skip to episodes 5 and 6. It’s actually necessary viewing for Mando season 3, which is annoying but at least the episodes are good.

I finally went back and finished it and was like “why didn’t someone tell me it finally gets good/fun in like the 6th episode with lots of Luke Skywalker and the Rosario Dawson Jedi girl.” It basically became a Mandalorian episode, was waaay better than the boring Boba Fett centered episodes before it.
It WAS a Mandalorian episode - Boba Fett straight up isn’t in a single frame of that episode.
To me it seems that most of the disney plus series are movie scripts that never made production. Pretty much every one feels stretched.

Idk I thought it was fine length wise, my biggest criticism is that it doesn’t really explain what Jimmy Hoffa was doing, they explain generally and skip over the details and you have to either know em, look it up, or not understand some things. Wolf of Wall Street was similar, wasn’t familiar with pump n dumps when I watched it and the movie doesn’t explain.

Babylon felt SO long. Slight spoilers: I think for me they just sit on that opening party scene for just way too long. It could have the same, or arguably better, impact if it were like 1/3 of the length because I found myself wondering if the entire movie takes place at that party. It’s really a shame because there’s so much to love in that movie.

Too many characters that I can't care enough about taking too long to die obvious deaths because the movie couldn't get to a proper climax without dropping some characters. Then character deaths are made irrelevant anyway due to the ending lore. The ending lore itself is just so dragged out it felt like another movie, just even more boring than the one I just watched.
The "surprising" backstabbing is also only "surprising" because the explanation for it makes absolutely no fucking sense and the plot twist is kinda ruined from start since the backstabber is already on a wrong foot with the main character from the beginning.
Yes. One of my worst theater experiences in years which sucks since I like the idea. But why there was so many chatting scenes when the actors chose to play everyone so damn flat and boring is beyond me.

I have grown to like the ending. I don't find it schmaltzy. I find it kind of devastating. He waits 2000 years for AI to supercede humanity and only then, he is given an artificial reality of his fantasy....for one day only. It's the saddest possible version of a happy ending. He is not truly loved. And it takes humans ceasing to exist for him to be treated humanely.
It’s some of the bleakest shit. I watched it after I had kids and the scene of David at the end, so happy with just one more day with his “mother” and knowing at the end of the day every piece of her will disappear forever … putting that in context of being a parent and imagining your kid summoning a ghost of you to enjoy for a day before you fade back into the ether out me in a place. Good ending, good movie.

Having rewatched the film a few times, I actually like the ending now (didn’t at first). I’ve had this experience with most of Kubrick’s films tbh.

Casting DeNiro really annoyed me in the Irishman. They needed someone young and intimidatingly big, and he was neither. Even when they tried to de-age him he looked old. It was so jarring. Like I’ve seen him playing dad roles in movies for 30 years now, I’m not going to get so immersed in the movie and believe he’s 20.
that and we know what young DeNiro looked like. And old DeNiro deaged didn’t look like that.
That really bothered me the most. I get that it's different age gaps but the start of Civil War shocked me because I was looking at Less Than Zero era Robert Downey Jr on the screen again. The effect really surprised me.
Maybe they just couldn't morph old De Niro's face into his Taxi Driver era. But the effect just didn't work.
If the effect was that unconvincing they should’ve just cast a younger actor for when Deniro was supposed to be younger. Because due to how shoddy the effect was I didn’t grasp the time differences early on.
I couldn’t figure out why people kept calling this old man “kid.”
Zardoz. Watched it years ago with friends and we were genuinely distressed when we learned we were only halfway through the movie at the celebration/wedding

I do admire what director Damien Leone pulled off here. It's the Lawrence of Arabia of slasher flicks, an epic-length splatter fest. But Leone also edited the movie and seems like he didn't want to leave anything on the cutting room floor.
A slasher movie shouldn't have you checking your watch.
Mentioned this in another comment but most horror movies really have no reason to be more than 90-100 minutes long. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, like with Alien, The Thing and Jaws

Reeves should have just hard focused on the whole Zodiac-Riddler aspect and made a 2 hour, S-tier detective Batman movie.
They could have cut out all the flooding subplot and the movie would have been so much better. Having his master plan be a few bombs and some water felt cheap and out of character for Riddler entirely.

Agreed. I thought the big hunting scene with the bad guys didn’t need to be quite so long. I understand its purpose, but it felt like they abandoned the protagonists’ story for like half an hour.
Pearl Harbor.
Went to see it. Almost an hour of character set up, introducing romance etc and THEN the planes started flying in.
The power went out and movie stopped. (We thought it was part of the movie at first)
Tickets were refunded, everyone sent home.
A couple of days later we came back and sitting through that first part of character introduction and romantic interests again was ugh.
WW84, it was 2hr 31min to long.

There was a good 30-45 minute stretch there where the story really didnt advance a whole lot. But it sure was pretty to look at.
Artificial Intelligence. It's been a while but I think it could have ended with the two robots stuck at the bottom of the ocean instead of this weird attempt at a happy ending with alien archeologists.

The entire goal with that movie was to recreate that roadshow epic film experience from the Golden Age of Hollywood. There was an intermission and everything. Not sure if the experience translates to the small screen as well. Though I did note elsewhere that it worked pretty well split into a four episode limited series on Netflix.
I saw the 70 mm print in the theaters and loved it. I went in knowing it was a long film and I am an admitted Tarantino fan. I also love those old movies such as Ben Hur, so it gave me an opportunity to experience something like that.
GWTW is long, but Margaret Mitchell's novel is over 1,000 pages. It's an interesting read for sure
Avatar 2. How many goddamn times do those kids need to get rescued
The movie could have clocked in at 2 hours if the kids weren't so goddamn stupid and didn't need to be rescued all the time.
Meet Joe Black- I actually like watching long movies but this movie (3+ hours) could easily get its point across in less time.
Will probably get downvoted for this but in several of the Mission Impossible movies I find myself thinking “OH JUST BLOW UP ALREADY” during several action sequences.
Pearl Harbor simultaneously feels like it never starts and never ends.
