I get that it can be risky, but at some point you need to pursue criminals or the message is that you can commit a crime and just drive away fast and get away without consequences. Criminals have learned that they can shoplift without consequence and now stores are even locking up soda bottles.

Kids have gone to school for hundreds of years without phones. If parents need to contact their child in an emergency, they can call the school, who can then page the child. The lag of a minute or two isn’t going to be a life or death situation.
Best thing I did is get a double decker rack. It works perfectly and doesn’t take up extra floor space.
