I stopped using it entirely, it is a cesspool of the worst types of people to do business with, not to mention the multitude of scammers.
Last time my gf and I tried using fb marketplace was to sell our switch and games. Dude contacted her at 9pm wanting to buy just mario kart, demanded her personal phone number and address so he could "contact her" and come get the game right now at her home. She instantly blocked him and we agreed never to use the fb marketplace again.
My wife and I have used it several times. We got our kitchen table from there. We got a bunch of wedding stuff in 2021. We got some baby stuff. No issues.
Maybe it's because we live in a relatively civilized town. I think we bought exclusively from women (just by chance, not intentionally), and we met at a public place for.everythijg except the table. It also could be what we were buying. If you're buying/selling something like video games or electronics, it's probably different from buying wedding or babystuff.
I agree, I've gotten a TON of stuff from FB marketplace, and aside from one instance, it's all been just fine.
My cousin though? She lives in one of the suburbs of Chicago, and she said it's an absolute cesspool.
There's a subreddit for offerup. I had never even heard of that app, but for some reason I started getting posts from thete in my feed. It's full of denerates. I imagine those same people are also trying to buy and sell their knockoff Beats headphones on facebook marketplace in certain neighborhoods.
I've never heard of it either. š¤·š»āāļø
Maybe it's what someone buys that makes a difference.
I generally tend to buy older wood furniture to refurbish/redesign and sell. Like chipped old "art deco" era, fill in gaps and missing veneers, then either paint in "wild" colors, or hand paint scenes or patterns; like "gypsy boho style" or whimsical style.
I got pretty much all of my furniture other than the mattresses on Facebook marketplace. Would recommend.
Exactly this, itās what youāre buying. I bought some large power tools from someone on marketplace. Selling or buying things that could be easily shipped, and a better price selling online, youāre better off just selling on eBay or somewhere else than trying to do in person deals.
Selling is 10x worse than buying on there
I got a free purebred kitten that is healthy and had all of it's vaccinations done already on Facebook marketplace
My mom is using it right now to sell off a bunch of stuff she doesn't need before moving and she's already encountered this situation a few times. People wanting her number, people wanting to come by at bizarre times, people asking questions of items that are clearly answered in the description... Thankfully she's internet savvy and knows a scam or dangerous situation when she sees it but she's had a similar takeaway. I'm sure Craigslist and OfferUp also have their fair share of weirdos but interestingly I've never run into the same problems on those platforms.
my girl got scammed out of 300$ trying to buy a cat:/ last time she was even allowed on facebook(the page had 28 followers and was made a few months prior)š
Controlling much
When i see people say the word allowed in the same sentence referencing a SO I feel so sad.
I asked someone recently to meet me in a mall parking lot 10min from their house. They said āno thanks I donāt feel like waiting in a parking lotā
āThen you donāt feel like getting this item. Thanks, byeā The entitlement is hilarious.
I understand why you suggested soā¦. But from the other personās perspective I too can understandā¦. Depend on context. Like parking lot at night would be suspiciousā¦ but again context matterā¦. And I do see from both side. Just hope that in such situation what would be a good middle ground apart from being asinine in the replyā¦
A good middle ground would be āthen no thanks byeā. This isnāt Dr Phil, we arenāt trying to reach a mediation agreement
I agree completely
It was a gold mine back when I found it in late 2017 until around mid 2020. It's not worth fooling with anymore since EVERYONE found it during the pandemic.
I've had good luck but there's a bunch of scammers who keep advertising mattress clearances? Like all different, unrated accounts, too. I don't get what the scam is.
facebook made me wait almost a month before my profile was verified to just browse marketplace, yet there's sooo many bots and scammers in all of the groups.
I've been browsing it for a car lately and I hate doing it. Everything posted is either a blatant scam like 5 year old models with low mileage being sold for under $2,000 or a laughable rip-off like 20+ year old models in shit condition with high mileage being sold for $4,000.
It's just as bad trying to sell a car on there. Nothing but entitled assholes, scammers, and time wasters. It's so annoying I deleted my listing for my car & plan on going old school & park it on my property close to the road with a for sale sign on it.
I had my 08 Jeep Patriot on there a year ago for $1,000 with 150k miles on it. It had some issues popping up, but I had replaced the subframe and it was a reliable and maintained car. The amount of spam/scam posts or absolute low-ball chud offers I got was astonishing. I saw offers as low as $400, and if you spent any amount of time looking at car lots or classified the cheapest cars you could find were starting at $800 for 250K miles and needed MAJOR work. I ended up pulling the listing and putting a "$1000 FIRM" sign where I worked and a guy bought it within 2 hours.
$1,000 is steal for something like that
A lot just donāt fucking respond back. Iām about ready to report them for it.
If I get a generic "is this still available?" I won't respond. 90% of the time it's just going to be an endless thread of questions that can be answered by reading the description.
I donāt use FB marketplace for anything other than laughs, but Iām not sure Iād ask anything different. Ā Seems like a polite and direct way to open up the convo?
I use different forms of hi and also ask questions for info that no one seems to want to include, like basic measurements for furniture pieces.
See, when I use it I ask thatā¦ because too many times Iāve messaged people, not gotten responses, only for them to respond 3 days later with āoh, sorry, I forgot to take this downā, despite them saying āif itās up, itās available!ā
Same. I was trying to buy a decent bass amp and I arrived at the guyās apartment building. I was waiting for him to come outside for 25-30 minutes only for him to be like āsorry stuck in a meetingā even though he said earlier that day that he would be available. I asked him how long and he said an hour. Iām considering just buying a new lower end one at this point cause it seems impossible to even find people that have respect for other peopleās time
The same thing happened to me with a home theater receiver. Made arrangements and confirmed that they would be there. Drove two hours to the meeting spot for them not to show up. Called and emailed with no response, three hours later I got a msg saying they don't want to sell anymore... Then they immediately blocked me so I couldn't respond.
I just don't trust anyone anymore to do these transactions. How much for the car? Ok, I'll bring 5000 cash with me. Duh.
Since everyone is posting their negative experiences, Iāll post my positive.
I picked up a fully function treadmill last week for $50.
It was a relatively new one in great shape. The owner had bought a new one and just wanted the old one gone.
Omg happened to me as well, was trying to deliver a phone. Guy disappeared when I was there. Waited 40m, I left, and he was like "you should have kept calling me". nah, fuck ya
I never deliver something I'm selling. It's always "meet me at my house" or I tell them to meet me at the mcdonalds 1 min from home
I could never meet someone at my house lol I donāt like random people knowing where I live
Then you should tell them to Zelle you 50% of the cost of the item up front for you to deliver it to them.
Tell them up front that if you show up you are only waiting 15 minutes for them and if you have no reply by then or they don't show up within 30 minutes total you are going home and they forfeit their deposit
I would not buy anything from someone (not a company) who asked for money upfront.
I have good experiences of buying stuff from redditors. I make sure they have good reviews though.
I donāt put up items on Facebook marketplace so luckily I donāt have to worry about that. Iām just saying that since safety is such a huge thing for me, I wouldnāt like having random people know where I live.
Yeah nobody is doing that, what reality do you live in?
On watch forums you have buyers sending 20k+ through a wire transfer to another reddit member before their watch has ever been shipped.
I have bought a watch and watch accessories from reddit members and I have sent the money upfront
Ig if you deal with shady people then you can't expect decency.
Literally anyone can make a reddit account, and extra accounts are free. What's stopping someone from giving themselves good reviews with sock puppet accounts so that they can rip people off on huge wire transfers?
Mods would find out or people who buy the watches would do their due diligence in making sure to research the sellers history and check out the buyers as well.
The watch community is filled with nice people. I was offering to fly within the US to meet someone at the airport to exchange watches.
Britinii
Britinii. The new drink at Starbucks.
Holy duck that name is terrible
Mightve been intentional and they actually just sold it to someone else
Oh now THAT really pisses me off.
I drove 45 mins one way, just to get to the town she was in for directions to meet, and she tells me her BF had just sold it, and they were there picking it up right then. š¤¬š¤¬š¤¬
I would have been really pissed for the waste of time, if it wasn't for the fact I was in that area already for another FB item.
The worst.
She's illiterate to boot.
I just seent it!

Lol I honestly can't even talk to some people because the grammar is just UNBEARABLE. I am not a snob by any means but it's like a punch in the shoulder every time I hear it š
Thereās a youtuber I watch that says āhad sawā and it drives me crazy lol
I have insomnia and some pretty chronic fatigue so I end up falling asleep at an opportune time. I know this is an issue for me, so I set alarms, sometimes five or six alarms if I'm feeling particularly tired. Because my issues should not impact the people I agree to make plans with. I do not understand why so many other people don't take that seriously
Cause they have "main character syndrome", lol.
Wow exactly same.
I didn't realize it was exactly a year ago until now lol
It's creepyyyyy
Is there like a narcolepsy epidemic?
Any idea why people do this? Seems to happen a lot from what I hear
Fuck that guy
While he's asleep?
Preferably not but still, fuck that guy
you might be waiting a while.
About 30 min it seems
What if I donāt want to fuck him by the time he wakes the fuck up?
Just leave and ask him not to contact you again
What if I want to fuck but not him?
You always have yourself
Find a prostitute
Thatās toughš
Facebook marketplace is super scammy
Facebook marketplace can be really exhausting. I admire people who persevere with trying to buy/sell things.
Iāve had some good luck trying to sell a couple of random things here and there but recently I tried to sell an old laptop (that worked fine), but all of the time wasters and scammers come out of the woodwork for things like that and oh my god itās just mentally draining.
Facebook marketplace can be really exhausting.
Probably why OP's seller needed a nap.
I sold a few things on there. It's really annoying when every notification you receive is from a scammer.
From my experience, one person out of 5-7 that contact me is legit. And even then, you never know if the legit person isn't going to suddenly ghost you for no reason.
Last year I needed a car, found one later in the night and messaged early in the morning before I went to work. The price the guy was asking was probably about right for the condition of the car. He messages me back a couple of hours later saying he now wants double for the car, roughly what one in mint condition goes for, because of scammers. Well, I was legitimately interested at the original price, but at double you can go fuck yourself.
Confirmed the pickup time before I left too.
Yeah but did you ask if it was also their nap time? I bet you didnāt!
Sounds like my weed dealer from the 80s is now selling on FB marketplace.
So happy I donāt have to deal with those people anymore!
Happened to us twice in one week. Both times we told the people we were on our way. Both times about ten mins before arriving they confirmed they knew we were on our way.
Facebook is full of scammers. I once tried to sell a phone on the market place and the buyer never showed up.
I never understand what the "scam" element is, though. Scamming someone out of their time?
That one in particular isn't a scam but an annoying person. There are a lot of scammers though.
The one I see the most is about the buyer wanting to send their own courrier.
Basically, they tell you they'll send someone from DPD with the money so they can pickup the package to your home.
And of course, if you move on with their idea (I had to try once to see where the scam was). They'll ask you to send them money for the insurance. That way, in case there's a problem with DPD losing the money, the insurance covers for it.
And then the buyer obviously tells you they will add that fee themselves to the money DPD will bring with them, so it's refunded to you. And seeing how many times I get this stupid scam, I'm pretty sure it does work with some people :/.
Yeah I had someone try the courier thing and straight up told them to go fuck themselves lol. I thought they were a bot or something, but they replied with a human response.
I wish those scammers would use that energy to scam someone actually deserving, not some average person trying to sell their stuff.
I might be missing something here but wouldn't there be a more efficient way to scam cash than by little increments like this?
The little increments work the most reliably, though it may or may not equal out in the long run. Itās like, would you rather get $100 a day, or $3,000 every month? (made up numbers, idk how successful these people are at scamming).
What happens if a scam fails? Would you rather be out $100 or $3,000?
Most likely though, scammers have multiple scams going, both small scale and large scale.
I don't even know if that scam works. But I'd say it does. My first resale on facebook was something like 4 or 5 years ago, and one of the very first messages I got was that one. My last resale on facebook was a few weeks ago and I got 2 messages like this one :D.
And I guess, it's easier to make people trust you if you don't ask for 100$ right away. But go with 10-15$, people who fall for scams will more easily fall for that one. And I guess they don't limit themselves to one person per day. They must be messaging a lot of random sellers in the hope that one will bite.
I scammed plenty of scalpers out of their time when they were charging $1k for series x and ps5
bought my car off marketplace and during the test drive the owner came with and told me that 10+ ppl had asked to test drive or look at it with a time and all and just never showed up.
people are just weird
For 20 bucks. I usually just leave the item outside and tel tjen to throw the cash under the matt
I feel like there is a high chance that they just take it and not bother leaving the money
Definitely a risk. But for cheaper items Iām willing to take. I donāt advertise it on the ad. Itās usually after weāve already figured out pickup times and what not then Iām just like hey, āIāll set it on the porch and you can throw the cash under the matt if you end up taking itā. And that way I donāt really have to deal with them possibly running late, or whatever might happen. Itās just there.Ā
Iāve probably done like a dozen or so sales where Iāve done it and never had a problem.Ā
So thatās what I felt during my napā¦
This happened to my boyfriend once. Guy said heās meet us at a location and then ghosted us. We waited for about 30 min before leaving and he messaged us about 40-50 minutes after the agreed time asking if we were still there.
A message that he was gonna be late would have been nice for my bf. But he just ghosted for almost an hour and expected us to wait.
I had somebody from marketplace say they were coming at 2PM to pick up a bed frame. 2:15 rolls around, nothing. 2:45 finally hear back from them, āso sorry, we got caught up doing another pickup but weāre on our way now.ā I asked them how long they would be and they said they were coming from a town an hour away. Lol no, you have wasted my time and waiting on you for this cheap bed frame is not worth my time. I took it to the dump because I was moving and needed it gone.
Ugh I've had this. The seller wanted to meet at 7pm. I said I cant do that late because I need to get my toddler to bed. We agreed on 630 instead. Got there, nothing. No buzzer on the apartment, not answering. Finally texted me back at nearly 7 saying that they were sorry but had to get their child from daycare and got caught up. I refused to pay for the item and was prepared to leave, but she gave it to me anyway. It was only $10, but its the principle. We agreed on a time. You manipulated the situation to get the time you originally wanted and expected that to be ok??? Nah.
So its OK for you because of an issue with ur kids bed time but an issue with their kid and needing to pick them up BEFORE the daycare workers could leave is unforgivable hmmm
What? They suggested a time to meet, I said that didn't work and offered multiple alternatives. The time we ended up with was agreed to by them? I didn't force them to do anything. If that time didn't work, they should've said so instead of manipulating the situation in bad faith.
But they did say so and moved it for you because you wanted to get ur kid to bed.......they had to pick up a kid from daycare......effecting more people over just you and ur kid ie the workers at the daycare at the end of the day who want to go home
So kinda main character ish
I'm not sure how you would do this differently. If one person says hey can you meet at 7? You're allowed to say sorry that doesn't work for me, can we do a different time? If the other person responds with sure is 630 better? And I say yup that's perfect. I'm not sure how that makes me the main character? That's just how adults make plans with other adults. Like I said, they were free to choose another time altogether. They suggested 630 in the first place. If they had said actually how about Saturday afternoon? We would've done that...I'm not unreasonable, but it seems you'd like to paint me as such so, cool. Have a great day
I for one wouldn't go and buy something with a kid in tow if it was around time for bed
Holy shit dude what aren't you understanding? I could've done any fucking time. THEY chose that time! All I did was communicate that the originally offered time didn't work for me. I wasn't like i need to get it today, change your schedule to make that work for me. I could've gone aaaaaaaaaaaany other time that worked for both of us. Saturday at 3 after your kids soccer practice? I'm there. Sunday morning before you need to go to church? You got it. And if they had responded with the fact that they wanted it picked up only on the day and time that didn't work for me, I would've politely declined and wished them all the best in selling to someone else. Sometimes things just don't work out, you know? You sound like a right pain in the ass and I'm sorry for anyone who's had the misfortune of trying to make plans with you.
Lmfao whatever you say miss
Iām mildly infuriated at you for waiting more than five minutes. This is your own undoing.
What an asshole, fuck him. I wouldn't have even replied just block instantly.
This guy knew you were on the way and slept? While there was money on the way? That should tell you everything you need to know. Money is like caffeine to me, if itās on the way Iāll stay up all night.
My banks give me notifs for every $ moved to and from my accounts. Some people just don't care I guess š¤·āāļø
Same here! Itās just wild to me, how you can literally sleep on the money. So many times in this sub the same posts have been made, I donāt understand how you could waste a fellow humanās time like this. Everyone is busy and has a life too lmao.
I'm pretty chill in most scenarios you throw me at, but I'm money-focused to a fault lol. It's hard enough getting someone to buy something second-hand, I'm not giving up the opportunity if I have the chance.
Exactly! You have the right mindset, as soon as anyone shows interest iāll give you the time of day. Only scenarios im shutting down is stupid requests and low ballers.
I canāt fcking stand people that do this sht. The lack of respect is just insane. You KNOW someoneās coming, youāre a fcking adult who should organize himself to take a quick nap and set up an alarm to be ready before the buyer arrives ffs. But sadly some people are just too fcking stupid to organize themselves with even the smallest of schedules.
What an asshole I donāt get this. What do they benefit from this? If this is a scam, how does it work?
Probably not a scam. Just a dumbass.
I genuinely believe he fell asleep. Having said that, fool me once...
I feel asleep one time when I had an arranged meet up as well. I sell a lot of things and genuinely forgot about this one even though I had a reminder set :(
I felt horrible but the buyer was understanding or really wanted the item.
But yeah, it can happen to anyone - I felt horrible
This happened to me once, ended up shipping it to him on my dime. Felt terrible.
It's random for me. I just sold a car on Marketplace in 30 minutes, last week. All legit. Bought a camera from a guy three weeks ago, legit. Tried to rent a house, total scam. Another apartment, scam.
Yeah have wasted too much time with poor communication, won't follow up, follow through, or not of their word.
Drive 45 minutes, and pay bridge tolls for them to be like.. Oh I decided to give it to my cousin instead, my bad.
FB marketplace is just full of scammers and people trying to drop ship shit. Easier to just search thrift stores or Craigslist
I actually fell asleep once. And I was terribly sorry. Guy came to pick up a gaming mouse If I'm correct but I gave him a free keyboard to go with it as well because I felt so bad.
gives me flashbacks from buying weed in high school
The nerve of some people... f*ck 'em, no bargain is worth being treated like that.
I don't get people like this, same with other appointments. When I have an arrangement like that, even if it's at my place, it's on my mind constantly. I don't get people who can be like "yeah I've gotta go to the dentist today and it took me weeks to get an appointment, but I'll take a nap, see when I wake up." That's like a concerningly disconnected level of chill to me.
Behavior like this (falling asleep mid transactions with people) indicates drug addict problems to me. Likely stolen stuff a meth head is trying to sell you and either actually fell asleep cause theyāve been up for days or was in the middle of trying to get high and just thought youād wait.
Did you knock on the door?
They gave an approx location corner of two streets. I do a similar thing tbh so it wasn't out of the ordinary.
I can't deal with this shit. I used to be an opiate addict and these sketchy parking lot deals, waiting for no-shows, getting calls after you get back home empty handed, it's all just wayyyy too triggering for me personally. Like reliving one of the shittier parts of being an addict, my own personal hell.
Oh god I hate this. I went out to buy something off a seller on FB marketplace (with confirmed pickup time) in the middle of winter once. I had no vehicle, which she knew. She took a nap and left me waiting outside in -45 degree weather. I called, texted and rang the doorbell, then she had the nerve to be mad at ME for "not doing enough" to get her attention.
This was in the middle of lockdowns too so there weren't any stores or restaurants I could go into to warm up. I got frostbite and hypothermia š„²
Oh my goodness so annoying
It was good like 5-6 years ago. I got a lot of things for my new house. But it went downhill, and now it's all ads.
I had this one time. I waited for ~20 minutes and he finally responded after I was down the block. I turned around and still picked up the item. He was really apologetic and gave me $20 off for the hassle. I get that shit happens, but it still feels wild when people seem to forget agreeing to times.
I was burned worse - drove to house, texted and waited and texted and waited; finally got response as I was driving away; pulled over to read text - the ahole sold it someone else AS I WAS DRIVING OVER TO BUY IT. Wasted my time and fuel AND reneged on the deal! Reported his ass. He got mad at me. Wanker.
Don't be l8 m8
š¤£š¤£
They'd also 'fallen asleep', despite having ring cameras and me pressing the doorbell several times before I went back to the car.
99% of Marketplace are time wasters. Iāve had 8 listings up for 3 months and sold 2 things. Every other message enquiry has been no reply or never turns up.
People suck.
I had this happen once a few years ago. I was the one trying to sell/get rid of stuff before going abroad for a couple months, so I was trying to clear out all the things I didnāt need and hopefully make some extra money, which I needed before going. Someone made plans to pickup and pay for the item they wanted. Even picked the time and place themselves, yet never showed up lol. I was pissed that I drove all the way out there for no reason. And they never responded after I got there. They knew they werenāt coming, yet never bothered to say anything.
Yeah man that place sucks these days. I haven't personally used it in a few years but I've read horror stories.
Hell when I used to post something a few years ago I'd get a bunch of responses like are you going to have it in February or March or whenever I get my tax return, and it would be like in June when I put the item up for sale. Lol.
Sure I'll hold it for 8 months. Lmao.
This is the reason why I do pick up only. Over people not showing up. At least this way if they donāt show at least Iām already home.
I remember I once drove for 3 hours to purchase a sofa and when I was getting into the city I was buying it in I told the seller I was almost there only for them to then tell me they sold it to someone else. I donāt fuck with the marketplace anymore.
I canāt believe you waited for 30 minutes!! I would wait 10 tops.
I've had that happen a few times when I sold something on marketplace. They say they are on the way then never show up. I try to reach them when the time to meet hits, wait 15 min, then report them as no show and leave if they don't respond and confirm they are running late.
I have done this, I feel horrible when it does. Last time I personally delivered the item to them as an apology and 10 bucks off.
Your first mistake was using fb marketplace
My recent fun was two items listed at $42. only 10-15 bucks below average price. 2 days later when I'm on my way, I see a pop up that they changed the listing price, and start asking me what my offer is, saying it's 70 on Amazon.
Iāve had this happen, so fucking annoying
Who here actually uses fb marketplace?
You can buy a creeper from Walmart, Autozone, Oārileyās I know they are more expensive but you donāt have to deal with these people and thereās no ass/back sweat on them.
FB should just pull the whole thing and just call it a failed experiment. Most of the loser users can go back to the flea market, where they belong...
Probably day drunk lol
I remember I had just moved and wanted an acoustic guitar again. Found a seller and I messaged him I'm interested. Said to get back to him tomorrow. Message him the next day just asking when is a good time and location convenient for him to plan a meet up to pick it up. He flips out on me saying to leave him alone and stop bothering him lol.
People are so weird on FB marketplace. Sellers and buyers. I remember seeing a funny video making fun of people on market place. They ask if it's still available. You reply yes then they fuck off lol.
I mean sucks but itās marketplace. Would expect that kind of behavior. Not saying itās acceptable though.
No respect!
I sold my previous car on Marketplace. It was listed for Ā£1500. Someone contacted me and just said "I'll take it. What's your address?".
Half an hour later he turned up and announced he would pay Ā£300 in cash for it... I told him that for Ā£300 he can take the 2 front wheels and fuck off.
I got several more offers of "I'll take it off your hands for Ā£400" etc. Finally sold it for Ā£1300.
Rubbish ppl
What was the item?
It says in the pic my dude.
This is a stupid post. Shit happens. And this isn't mildly infuriating. Its fucking infuriating. What a total lack of respect.
And gor the runaround sue.
Ive been on both sides of thatā¦ feel bad for wasting peoples time/ gas
Drug dealer behaviour right there
What do you expect when youāre wheeling and dealing for $20 items on FB marketplace š
šššš
While this sucks at least you get a funny story out of it,.
Where are you all living to have such bad experiences with marketplace?
Marketplace in Quebec is good, maybe y'all live in the city?
You literally waisted your time leaving lmao might as well just wait for the idiot to come out now lmao
Man, two "lmao"s. Must've been real funny
I love when people feel the need to say āplease donāt contact me againā rather than āIām no longer interestedā. I can promise you that the seller is not going to try to befriend you š
A man has to sleep!

They were picking up the item, not selling it
OP is being petty, the guy said he slept and is sorry, OP then said "Don't contact me again", what a douche.
if you agree on a time to meet with someone, you should be up at that time
falling asleep isn't cool, even if you're sorry.

I have been burned like this, I rarely look at marketplace anymore because it seems to be full of spam and time wasters.
