Cause he looks so much like my grandma that I was a young adult when I finally realised the grumpy old lady was a grumpy old man. (Because of the internet, ofc) Anyone else?

Yes.
I thought so! Edit - I, for ages thought like OP - very unsure if this person is an old man or an old woman. I only recently realized this was the same person who calls out “Proudfeet” and then it all finally made sense.
Odo Proudfoot
Proudfoot
The actor is Noel Appleby and he passed away in 2007.
Aww, I'm sad. He's one of my favorite things about the Shire scenes.
Agreed. And I thought he was an old woman for years like a lot of people.
His wife walking up to him and chastising him didn't clear up the gender confusion for you guys?
I always thought it was the daughter
I mean… Lesbians exist.
i thought they only came out during the full moon and wine tastings...0.o
Lol, you don't say? With context clues I think we can safely assume that a 2001 film about a bucolic Anglo ideation of mythical Europe didn't just add lesbians into the first five minutes for the hell of it.
Well you didn’t bother to find out, did ya?! You can’t just call them woman!
I don't think I ever referred to him. Just laughed during the scene. It's amazing how much a side character, maybe even an extra, can set up a scene so well. I'm thankful for the joy he continues to bring us.
I had never made the connection myself! Love how tall Proudfeet stood.
Pretty sure that guy made an Monty Python reference
Of course. I'm a bit slow right now. I've been in the Alabama heat and humidity all day.
That’s fair, and you wouldn’t expect a Python reference in a lotr sub. Then again, it is a silly place
Right! Clop clop
Aww, that's sad. I laugh every time I see that grumpy face scowling at Gandalf and then later when he laughs at the children enjoying the fireworks and his grumpy wife comes out and he has to pretend to be grumpy again. It's a great scene with just the right amount of comedy
Aww RIP, I’d have loved to be an extra in any of the films!
Me too!
TIL I’m one of few people who didn’t think this was an old lady lol
Looks so much like my old Scottish gran.
Thought the angry wife gave it away?
I got a vibe of "her daughter doesn't approve it", given the age gap
Didn't think of age gap just thought he looked old lol
That was my argument, too! Of course, my wife is also correct about these things. And everything. I’m checking out now.
I thought it was her daughter. I was shocked when I learned she was a he.
We can’t have lesbian hobbits? 🤨
They were Roommates!
Scissoring Hobbits
Hard to tell with British folk
When he smiled after the fireworks went off, I knew it was a man, especially after the wife gave him "a look of derision." (S L Cooper)
it's not an old lady.??
Of course not, that's Odo Proudfoot
I don't know what OP is talking about, looks like a woman to me.
Now I'm picturing the "Old woman!" "Man! And I'm 37, I'm not old!" scene from Monty Python with Gandalf and Odo Proudfoot.
Y’all are crazy, it’s so clearly an old man. Everything about his posture, grimace, and then his literal wife coming out makes it clear as day.
He could pass as a british grandma.
Tell that to my grandma! Also, the wife never looked like a wife, more like a daughter
TIL this wasn’t true
I thought they were roommates!
Growing up, I can identify with him more and more
He looks like Mac’s mom from Always Sunny
MR Proudfeet?!
I understand how elder people can look kind of difficult to gender, but can't for the life of me see him as a woman
No, I never thought that. From day 1 of seeing this on opening night it seemed obvious to me it was a man. But I definitely see how people thought it was a woman. This may sound mean, but the line between the two tends blur a bit as you get into to your older years
I thought this was a woman too. It's the hair that does it for me. My grandpa didn't have fluffy hair. My grandma did though.
Yeah it’s an olde timey older woman’s hair that made me think it was a woman up until quite recently
I always thought so too, even though I've seen the movies multiple times. He looks so much like my own grandma (rip).
OWEN!!!
"You haven't GOT a cousin" knocks him out with the frying pan
In certain angles the Old Man from Pawn Stars looks like an Old Lady too.
I thought it was my neighbour
I thought it was an old lady until I saw this post.
Hyacinth Brandybucket
Makes me wonder what the older women in your family looked like when you were growing up.
For sure thought this was a lady.
As a kid, I thought Bilbo from the animated Hobbit movie was an old lady.
For real, my aunt looked just like him. Of course I never said anything. But with how popular the movies were, I'm sure someone did.
I thought this was an old lady up until right now.
I have a neighbor who reminds me of him; always working in his yard with a scowl on his face. One time, i waved hi to him and he lit up with a smile and waved back.
I love him. He’s a treasure, and should’ve been shown more. Hail, Mr. Proudfoot!
The fireworks scene where he accidentally laughs and then puts on a grumpy face out of fear of his wife has always been one of my favorite scenes in the FotR
i think this guy was the one that the ring wraiths found and asked about the shire. home boy was one of like three people in the books to straight up defy them... essentially telling them to get the fuck off of his land.... while holding a broom....book hobbit probably had problems walking because of the size of his balls
He looks like my alcoholic coworker minus red eyes
Finally someone said it
Never thought so but now that you said it... I can see that
It blows my mind that people actually think he's a lady
Wait.....grumpy old hobbit isn't a lady? Ummm.......oops?
Haha omg, TIL. I had always thought the same!
I thought the doorman at Bree was a lady
Not an old lady? 😮
Lol I watched the original in the theatres and rewatched every couple years. I only realized he was a guy like 2 years ago.
No pic of grandma for reference... shame.
So did I, until just now. I suspect I have been accidentally misogynistic.
Me too
Wait what, i thought she was a old lady im fucking 20 no way that’s a dude
I know right
I've known old ladies that look like that, or worse?
Odo is better looking.
Are they not?
That's not a woman?? I'm 19 now, I've watched these movies several times
Is this the same character that shouts, “Proudfeet”?
