This is Benny (formerly Butch). We changed his name because we did not feel the name Butch fit him, and Benny sounded way cuter. Also, a name like Butch could result in a very, um, unfortunate typo, with the “I” being next to the “U” on a standard keyboard 😂
For those who adopted and changed their dog’s name upon adoption, what was your dog’s name before and what is their name now, and what were your reasons for changing the name?
That’s happiness
Adopted a lab/border collie mix when he was 1. Changed his name from Big Boy to Bandit. No way was I going to yell for “Big Boy” to “come here” when I was out in public with him.
That visual is hilarious 😂
I had a little dog named Honey when I was 8-10ish. When I would call her, the creepy old dude across the street would always reply 🙄
Once I had a class where one of the students official, legal first name was Baby. I felt like I was committing harassment every time I took roll call.
That was with adult college students. I hope old dude across the street creeping on 8 year olds is now in hell up to his nose in a pit of diarrhea
Come here big boy 🤣🤣
I’m gonna rub you real good now, Big Boy!
The rescue called her Mindy, we didn’t love that for a dog name but she was 8 months when we adopted her and we didn’t want to confuse her. We just dropped the M and she is now Indy, I’m also a huge Disney and Indiana Jones fan so her “legal name” is Indiana Jones but we just call her Indy. So basically “We named the dog Indiana” Iykyk lol
Indy is beautifulal!
I tried to convince my wife to name our dog Indiana, but she just gave me a strange look.
LOVE this!
Gotta say I’m a big fan of the name. I also love your username!!
Black Lab named hercules cuz he was the runt when born bit the biggest when 9 weeks old. I renamed him Vader. He was the best dog that ever lived, sorry everyone else. Lol
Don’t worry I’m personally convinced that all dogs are the best and us mere humans just can’t compare anyway
There's a quote I love: "Everyone think their dog is the best dog ever. They're all right."
We had a chocolate lab my boys named Vader, he was a sweetheart
No shade but the only famous Marley I’ve ever heard of is a ghost
My kids named our female shih tzu Marley after Bob. We also had a male cat named Joplin after Janis.
breeder had named him Gavin but after we got him at age 5 mo we renamed him Boo cuz he was born on Halloween lol (couldn't think of a better Halloween-related name) *
BOO
He’s boo-tiful! My mum has a Bassett hound called Betsy who goes by Boo, it’s a great dog name
Changed his name from Plato to Leo 🦁
Look at those fancy feet! r/fancyfeet
Joined that now! 😂
Good call. He definite doesn’t give off scholarly vibes.
We changed our lab’s name from Nox to Nyx. She is a black lab. When we adopted her we were told she definitely knows her name, so we kept it similar to her original name. But, I also prefer Nyx over Nox 😉
That was cute 😊
Her name was Willow when she was a foster but she didn’t know it, so I changed it to Olive. She just looks like an Olive to me. And when she does lab things I can say “good golly miss Ollie” which is fun.
We adopted our mixed breed from a rescue. The foster's children named her Meilin because they loved the movie at the time. She just didn't look like a Meilin. Mabel was immediately what popped into my mind when I saw her. Everyone agreed.
Growing up we got a dog that someone was rehoming in the classified section (that’s a sentence you don’t say often these days). We decided to name the dog Ginger because of his colour but after we brought him to the groomer it turns out he was just dirty 😭
Sam got him at 6 months he was bred to be a companion dog for a boy with special needs but the boy was kicking the crap out of the dog when he acted out so I bought Sam. Took my 2 young boys to go see him, the three of them were running around in the grass and I said “he looks like a big old bear”. So Bear he became. He’s 3 now and I can hear him snoring downstairs in the kitchen right now.
Awww Benny is also 3 years old!! And Bear looks like a very good boy 😍
Bear is a good boy. He’s sulking in this picture I was cutting the grass and he isn’t a fan of the mower.
He was Hugo before becoming Simba
We had a Tasha that we almost changed to Nala, but then went with Nilla.
Our sweet doofus lived across the street from us for a year as a puppy. He spent most of his time outside behind a fence. They named him Doggie/Dougie (depending on who was talking to him). We had a GSD but would always go over and give him treats and just sit with him. He would bark when he saw us coming out of the house. After a year, our girl got sick and passed very quickly. Literally two days later his owners asked if we would “watch” him for a few weeks. We knew where it was headed. After a week I asked them if it would be temporary or permanent and we finally got a “permanent”. Had him snipped and enrolled in training within a week. Let my husband name him - he chose Frank Lee because “frankly” we got taken with the whole “watching him” story. (He jokes but he loves him.). He’s literally the bestest boy in the whole world. (As an aside, he was just diagnosed with a mast cell tumor so send positive vibes.)
Oh, I’m so sorry to hear about his tumor!! Wishing all the best!!
What a beautiful boy. Sending very positive vibes for your darling boy. ❤️ 🙏 ❤️
Don’t remember his first name, but I renamed him Mac. My other dog is named Queso. I think that about explains it.
Got a Siberian Husky rescue. Her original name was ‘Diane’. Our family tried to settle on a new name and in the meantime adopted the nickname ‘Dogdog’… She ended up being Dogdog for the next 11 years. She was a good girl 🤍
This is Milo, formally known as Wilson. We hated the name. Who could look at that adorable face and think WILSON of all things?
He was barely 8 weeks old when we adopted him, so he didn't have to adjust. Wilson is now his middle name
This was my last service dog I got to train after 15 years of training them. She failed some of the qualifications for the specific program I trained for. So they asked if I would want to keep her, of course I was more than happy to.
Since she came from a specific breeder that was very involved in the program they kept the names that the breeder family had given the litter. They named her Delilah after the plain white Ts song. So we dropped the De and she became “Lilah.”
We still sang “hey there Delilah” to her all the time!
She died in 2019 at 12 years old. She was literally the best dog ever, though she did use some of her service dog “tricks” for “evil” in the last few years of her life. Like the time I couldn’t figure out why she was gaining weight so quickly, yet the cat food being consumed faster. I didn’t make the connection since it was on a high surface. She was moving a chair over to reach the food and then moving it back so she wouldn’t get caught.
She was Holly at the shelter. I changed her name to Susan.
The first time I met her she didn’t seem like a Holly. She had more attitude, but not as much as a Karen, so Susan it is! That quickly became Susie Chew and then Chewey and ChooChoo, and I only use “Susan” when she’s ignoring me or misbehaving.
Laurel to Meg / Megan. My reasoning was that Laurel was her temporary name that the rescue gave her, and it didn’t fit her personality in my opinion. So I changed it to something more fitting :)
Should have renamed her to Yanny 😂 she is super cute though 🥰
Adopted “Shyla” — now she’s Darby 🖤
Adopted as Lynne. Changed to Pearl. Pearl Lynne Begonia when she’s naughty (90% of the time).
Peter became Felix! He had an abusive first owner and I doubt that was even his name. New life, super loved, fresh start! 🖤
And he looks like he’s obviously super loved too, what with that huge smile on his face 🥰😍
We adopted a Flat Coated Retriever mix from a rescue. His rescue name was Gomer. We changed it, for obvious reasons, and called him Woody. We’ve also kept rescue names, like Archie and Sadie.
Mine isn’t a lab (so don’t hate) but her name from her previous owners of 3 years was Mia. Brought her home and said that name, no response, so tried different names/words and stumbled upon Cleo and she jumped on me and licked my face. So kept trying more names and every time I said Cleo or Cleopatra she would jump and kiss me. So she chose her name. She obviously wanted to leave her past behind.
I adopted a 5 year old lab mix abandoned by her owners, the humane society called her Jasmine but I changed her name to Emma
This is Shelby. The humane society named her Acute.
Shelby is a perfect name!!! Acute!?! As a nurse I think of a severe medical condition, not an adorable dog.
His name was Lemon Jefferson. I named him Chevy because he reminded me of a dog from a Chevy Chase movie. This was also before I learned how ... problematic ... Chevy Chase has apparently always been. Regardless, he was an amazing buddy.
Initially named Macy for 4 weeks, then I adopted her and renamed her Bagheera. She is so a Bagheera.
His name was Bones, but we changed it to Flint. I love GI Joe, and I thought he reminded me most of Flint.
Her name was Diamond when I adopted her. She had been in a no kill shelter nearly two years. I changed her name to Tybee (TIE-B) my friends liked to call her Underbite 🥰 She passed several years ago and is forever in my ❤️
His name was Popeye but I was young and wanted to name it, so TJ it was lol
Only one I changed was a black lab rescue names Jacques. I thought it was roo formal for a goofy lab and changed to jax
lucy to willow because my grandmothers name is lucy. but its funny because my previous dog's name was nick (short for nickels) and my uncles name is nick lol.
Sally… do I even need to explain? I was adopting a fully crackhead/hyper chocolate lab that’s tail beat everything down to a pulp, the name Sally DIDNT match whatsoever with her personality or anything about her. Changed her name to Lexi, and she loves her name!! I never met another dog named Lexi before, but it was a girly name that no other word sounded like, it’s unique, etc. plus I had a border collie at the time named Max, and Lexi and Max or Max and Lexi, the two names went together flawlessly. Lexi burbs after every meal, she screams in excitement every morning for food or to go outside, she does butt tuck runs, she’s like 14 and she STILL does this, craziest dog I’ve ever had, she’s also the funniest dog I’ve ever had. Lexi = crazy, and I think it fits perfectly lol.
This was my James Bond, who was named James by the rescue we adopted him from. My son who was 6 at the time had wanted to name him Chewbacca but I was afraid that would be a mouthful to call all the time 🤣 So we tried to think of a good name and decided on James Bond, since he was already used to James. 🩵 He’s been gone for two and a half years now but I think of him all the time; he was the bestest most goodest boy there ever was and I miss him dearly.
My parents adopted one of their dogs (Rottie/German Shepherd mix, as guessed by animal control) from the local shelter when he was just a puppy. The shelter had named him "Bosch" originally, and my parents HATED it bc all they could think of was the appliance manufacturer of the same name. For several weeks after they adopted him, they were stumped trying to figure out what to name him. One day, I was at their house playing with him and he had entered into his "mouthy" phase as puppies do. I was playing with him, and as I held a chew toy above him he started snapping at the air enough that you could hear his teeth clicking together. I remarked "Well, you're just a little alligator aren't you?" and we all looked at each other and said "Gator!" at the same time and he's been Gator ever since 😁
Gunther was a year old when we adopted him. His name was Hunter, but both my wife and I aren’t fans of hunting so I suggested Gunther cause it kind of rhymes with Hunter and it lends itself to variations such as Gunny (and it’s own derivation, Gunny Gunny Gun Drops), Gunnar, Gundahar, Gundharius the Great. And it means something like Battle Warrior in old German and that’s way cooler than Hunter
When we rescued her, her name was clementine. We changed it to Kyoto because it’s cute 😊 (also I always changed rescued/adopted pets names to help forge a fresh connection and identity to the new relationship between pet and new humans :) )
Banksy, she didn’t know it was her name, half my family couldn’t even pronounce it correctly, and it’s rather hard to say in an angry voice. She is now Ellie.
Meet Hank Williams. Benny and Hank look like they could be brothers! So cute! Hank's former name was Rocky. My husband and I love the name Rocky, because when we first started dating his family had a dog named Rocky...so the name was special. But my husband didn't want a second dog named Rocky. We also wanted to change his name because we suspect Hank's previous owners didn't treat him the best. When we called him Rocky, he didn't respond to it at all. But the moment we called him Hank, he responded and has ever since...like he needed a new name for his new life. We named him Hank Williams because that was my father in law's favorite singer and since he passed away two years ago, that's a nod to him.
Shelter had him as Baloo but I changed it to Dune :) no way I was gonna call him Baloo😅
Our first Jack Russell was always Suki. Our Aussie Shepherd/Husky cross was named Dodo by the shelter, he became Max. Our boxer/labrador was Shadow but Patch suits him better. We had already decided on Benji for our puppy but he was Milo before ❤️ Dog tax in replies
Suki
Max
Patch
Benji
He was Cisco when we got him, but he lived with us as Beau for 10 years. I miss him.
This Momo. Her rescue ground had named her Franci. We just hated the name and it didn't suit her at all. Momo is such a cute name and everyone agrees it suits her.
His name was Frankie, I changed it to Lucifer because he wears eyeliner (and we have a dog named reaper and I wanted them to match)
He was Coffee and I changed it to Charlie. I wanted a cute old man name.
Fisher to Draco. Didn’t like the name n Draco sounded badazz n I thought he was going to be a dominant boy, but he’s very scared of everything lol 🥴
We changed our Lab’s name from Dodge (after the vehicle) to Poncho. 🙂He was about 4 months old when we adopted him.
My little mutt. Her name was Datrese (duh-treese) and I renamed her Quinn. I really liked the artist Quinn XCII at the time that I adopted her. We think she’s part lab and part terrier.
I kept Datrese as a middle name though 😂
Shelter name: miracle My name: Mira
I was not going to be standing in a dog park yelling where’s my miracle? I’m chronically ill and it would be too ridiculous. I don’t need people also assuming I’m cray. I figured if I called her Mira maybe I could get her attention and get her to look on me.
Turns out she was deaf. So we never really called her anything, just referred to ‘the dog’ or ‘baby lamby’. She was the sweetest!
Clifford -> Moose
This is Nico (named for one of my favorite MLS players), and the shelter had him named Mikey. It just didn't feel right, and we had to make the switch.
Felicity, I changed her name to Ellie because I have a close friend called Felicity and I thought it might be weird.
Adopted as Lizzo. Forever Piper!!! (regardless of your music taste/pop culture background…she is a Piper through and through)!!! The nicknames are endless and the recall is 110%.
Adopted my senior dog who had the name Davidson now his name is Philip. He learned his new name in the first 3 days so it think I just won the dog name olympics
In January I adopted a Border Collie Mix and the rescue called him Welker. I changed it to Obi. I simply didn't like the name. Had I liked it I wouldn't have changed it probably or had he been older. He was still a very young puppy so it was an easy enough change.
Her name was Samantha, but that was my daughter's dog's name. So we changed it to Ellie. My husband's idea, but I liked it too.
So cute
Yellow Labrador named Lucky when I adopted him. I had already had a dog named Lucky and the name didn't fit his personality to me. He became Rowdy, a most appropriate name for a crazy, crazy dog. He's three and a half now and thankfully has calmed down some. The first year with him (he was eight months old when I adopted him) was rough.
It was Evan
Its now Chico
100% improvement
When we adopted our girl she was a year old. Hwr name was my real last name, not Black.
I couldn't run around the park yelling my own name. 😁
Went from Sir Lord Bailey blah blah to Samson
Our rescue lab was named Lucky. We changed to Charlie. He is a true Charlie — but wasn’t so lucky before we adopted him.
I adopted Jake about 3 years ago. I already had a Jack and felt that would be confusing, especially since Jack is a troublemaker. Since I already had a Jack and King, I named him Ace. Also naming him Queen or Ten really didn't seem to fit.
No, I didn't intentionally name all my dogs after playing cards. Jack and King came with their names. It was just a lucky coincidence.
Black lab pup from Rocky Mt Lab Rescue from mills in Missouri. Shadow when we adopted. He's now Karl. Named after Karl from the Walking Dead. We thought he's a lab puppy and we'd always be asking "Where's Karl. He's also Jimmy. A true gentlemen.
I have no idea what my spac dog name was originally. We just threw names at her until she responded to one, and that was her name. Looking back we are pretty sure English was her second language. I miss that bitch.
Sweet puppy! 💕
Name changed to Hadley (pretty girl or just pretty) from Heidi sister was named heidi.
Rescued a dog and his name was Cosmo. I read that having "long O" sounds for a name could be confusing to a dog as it rhymes with "NO". Changed it to Harley.
Mines name was Remi when I got him. I changed it to Rex because the lab I grew up and still see regularly is named Remi.
Just saying that I love all these name adjustments! They seem so much more fitting for labs
We named our puppies and some of the owners kept the names when they picked them up, some changed them. Here’s the list!
Original - now
Dora -Dora Phillip - Leo Garfield - Tiger Ted - Teddy Plankton - Higgins Dorothy - Ani Gemma - Gemma Clifford - Clifford Rosie - Raven
Got a girl who was named Luna, but my partner and I changed it to Tsuki (Japanese word for moon) because it’s cute and fits with the boy lab we already had named Kage (Japanese word for shadow). We often call her spooky though instead of Tsuki
His name was Dexter. Changed it to Roosevelt (Roo).
My friends had a cat named Dexter. That name didn’t fit Roo anyway. And Teddy Roosevelt is my favorite president.
We switched Brutus to Brewster, because a beloved aunt’s dog named Brutus had recently died. Brewster sounded like what we would have nicknamed him anyway, so it worked!
I adopted a puppy that they had to give names to for shot records her name was Helen… I fought every urge to not change it to Keller ended up going with a basic name Sophie.
Blackjack to Flapjack. He never really responded to the name Blackjack and it came from a family that straight up abandoned him for 2 days when they got evicted. A neighbor suggested Flapjack because he has VERY flappy ears and she liked pancakes.
My malamute GSDmix from spca was Shasta and I changed her name to Sasha.
The rescue we got our lab mix from had named her Bertha. BERTHA. Lucy fits her perfectly.
Got a dog in college from a classmate that was one of his dog's puppies that someone had taken and returned. She named him Snickers, he was awfully cute but Brutus was much more fitting (y tu Brute meant play time). He was such an awesome and smart dog until he got really sick one day and died that night, fairly certain my asshole neighbors poisoned him... Rip Brutus
I think you should name that lab “pluck” it like so cute and pluck worthy
Tilly to Milly. Our neighbor already had a Tilly.
We changed our late dog’s name upon adopting him. He was Karma, and we chose Carl. We thought Karma was a dumb name for a dog. 🤷🏻♀️😂 Carl ended up suiting him to a tee, and everyone who met him commented on his name. :)
My dog was originally named Tralfaz and I changed his name to Astro for obvious reasons.
We had a female coonhound named Kodiak that we renamed kitty. We also adopted a German shorthair pointer named Louis that we renamed Lucas. They both transition to their new names very quickly.
I just couldn’t see a female dog named Kodiak. It was weird to me. Also, Louis never fit him. He was always my Lukeydoodle.
Well my dog was a stray and was at the shelter for a couple weeks. They called him Bear. I really liked the name Kepler, and wanted to name my dog that way before we got him. Since no one knew his original name, and he was only called bear for a couple of weeks, I didn't feel bad Changing his name to Kepler.
One of my dogs was named Riggsy by the shelter because they found her tied to a big rig. I thought that was stupid so named her Lemon because she’s absolutely crazy (zesty). My other dogs name was Smoke. I don’t know if the rescue named him that or it was his previous owner but I don’t think dogs (especially him because he is a pitbull) should be named things that are supposed to sound “tough”. So I named him Arnold after the pig. Much less threatening to come across a big dog named Arnold than Smoke lol
Greyhound… Dexter to Erling, because of: serial killer connotation, and so we can call him Erl Grey
Ours was named Corn because he was found in a corn field in rural Southeastern Virginia. Teddy worked out better for him.
Her name was Rita but we didn’t know that until later. Her name is Stella now though.
We had an amazing 8 year old lab mix foster dog named “Ichobod” and I didn’t like any of the nicknames that you could create so we called him “bubba.” The name stuck since he was adopted by my husband’s cousin.
The nickname thing reminds me of my previous dog, whose name originally was Joe but after my brother said Joe sounded like an old guy (which I totally agreed with), we started calling him JoJo and that just stuck and it became his name. JoJo passed away almost two years ago and we miss him dearly 💝
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I had the bestest boy. He was around 3 when we got him lab collie mix. His name was Chico. We changed it to Gibson.
Jango to Atlas. I liked the name Atlas, but Jango reminded me of the movie and not my beautiful sweet puppy.
His name was Chance when he was at the shelter. They even used it as a pun when advertising him online - "Take a Chance on me!"
He didn't respond to it, so we brainstormed some names in the days between meeting him and adopting him, and landed on Finn. He's sweet, playful, smart, and goofy. Just a good Finn boi
Sawyer = Bruin Taliyah = Honey Alfie = Bud
Our black lab was named Bullet by the shelter because of how fast he ran. I changed his name to Titus because I couldn't imagine if he got out and I had to yell "here, Bullet."
Daisy to Evelyn for my mix. Lucy to Natasha for my purebred.
Peewee and Spunky are now Max and Tinkerbelle. They weren’t the names they originally had (if any, one was a stray pickup), I really wasnat a fan of the names and I wanted to choose.
I renamed both my dogs. My first dog was found out on the road and the rescue gave him a name. He didn’t respond to it and it didn’t fit his personality. My second dog was an owner surrender due to her health conditions. When I adopted her I gave her a new name to celebrate her new life as a happy and healthy doggy
Her name was "Muffie" and I absolutely hated that name. Now it's Lena. (lay-na)
Was Gus. Earned the new name of Hoover. After eating his first bowl of food, it was settled.
Andy changed to Jack for our Labrador. Gwynn stayed Gwynn/Gwendoline for our BT Coonhound ♥️
I have my black lab mix- Luna, and changed it to Raven. Luna is overused on every pet out there. Plus she’s from a reserve so it kinda suits her.
My boy was called Killy when I got him... changed that for obvious reasons
We adopted a rehomed dog about 4 years ago. Our dog is Sadie. New dog's name was Lady. Would have been confusing for them calling either one of them.
Mine was renamed Hattie. Her previous name was Linda. Yeh… no. (She was from Spain so I understand it means lovely there but to me all I can think of is a middle aged mom of 4 who drives an SVU and has an aging haircut)
Her name was Date. Just couldn't get that to sound right when I called her. So now she is Annie. She seems much happier as Annie
We adopted a sweetie that had gotten lost during the 4th of July. It was obvious she was a well loved and cared for dog but she didn’t have a chip. She was in the shelter for months. Her shelter name was Gretchen. It didn’t fit. We tried Dorothy and Dotty and a few other names and nothing felt right. One day a week later my brother got a pensive look on his face and said to the family “I think her name was Kate”. Her ears perked and her eyes lit up and she turned her head towards my brother! I’m so grateful my brother listened to his intuition so we could give our sweetie her name back ❤️
My girl was advertised as Sheeba, and is now Scout. I think she was only Sheeba for a few months between getting picked up as an injured stray and me adopting her, so I doubt she cared. She is a Scout though, not at all a Sheeba.
Benny looks so sweet. Give him some ear scratches for me😇
Mine was Marvin, and I changed it to Sesame because Marvin reminds me of that sad movie with the dog’s named Marvin.
Cowboy->Ridley. just a name the breeder gave him, not really our jam or his personality
Adopted a black and white Australian cattle dog & beagle mix came with the name Oreo. Way too common, seriously Oreo!. Change his name to Tucker.
Lab mix went from being Teddy to Guster. Named in honor of Lavender Gooms
Golden Retriever puppy named Kale and we changed it to Scout.
My boys name was Benny when we got him at a year old. My youngest child is named Ben. Couldn't have 2 lol, so while we were deciding I was calling him my little buddy. It stuck, so now he's Buddy
I bet your child suits the name Ben(ny) very well!!! It’s such a cute name, hence why my dog is named that :)
My boyfriends dog was born on christmas. The breeders named her mistletoe, but he didn't like that for a black lab. So he named her ginger, this was also around the time duck dynasty was popular and they had a black lab named ginger lol
I adopted a black Great Dane/lab mix. His name was Malcolm which I hated; mal basically means bad. I named him Judo because he was a big, black scary dog like martial arts are intimidating, but Judo was a gentle dog and judo literally means the gentle way. That dog still has my heart 9 years after he died.
maximus (formerly coconut) because the name was stupid and the owners were horrible caretakers.
This guy (here fresh from the icy sea this past winter) started as Raider. He’s now Black Phillip 🐐or Phil for short.
Here is Bennie mid-shake after fetching her favorite toy. The rescue named her Luna but I wanted a name with some significance to me so I named her after my most recent heart surgery — the Bentall procedure.
Our pup was named Loofah at the pound, we hated it for obvious reasons and renamed her Rani. We’re Indian and Rani means queen in Sanskrit and Tamil. 👑
My boy name was Benji and I named him Batman because he was 8 months old and he didn’t mind
Astrid conveys her somewhat exotic features, and as a 2 syllable word is great for recall.
A4364038 didn't really roll off the tongue.
When we adopted Chessy, she was a failed Seeing Eye Dog (cataracts). All dogs in a litter names start with same letter of alphabet. She is hell of a clever girl, changed her name to something sounded similar….to Jessie She adapted immediately 🥰
My mum adopted a black lab at 8 months old he came from a family with young children who had named him Shrek. My parents couldn't imagine calling that name so tried to find something similar and decided on Rex. He was a truly loving dog who naturally wanted to help with chores like taking washing out of the washing machine, helping my mum take her coat or socks off and fetching towel to dry hands when you washed hands at the kitchen sink. All self taught they never trained him to do it. You couldn't do anything without him pushing in to see what you were doing.
They called her Shiva because she shivered all the time. Once I got her I changed her name to Diva because it kind of sounds the same and she took to it right away. The only time she shivers now is when fireworks are going off or thunder.
this cute boy went from xavier to eli louis i thought xavier and posie (other dog) didn’t go together that well
Winchester, two many syllables so shortened it to winter or win with a nickname of pickle, pickles and pickle ball.
He was first named Harold at birth. Then got rescued then named blackie. He is now Leo for obvious reasons.
Adopted a terrier mix named Demi. I changed it to Sweet Dee. Now I call her Dee. If she’s getting into trouble it’s a reprimanding SWEET DEE! :)
Black lab named Buster. Adopted him around 1.5 yrs old. He didn’t look like a Buster. We renamed him Oliver and called him Ollie. Best dog ever.
Just adopted my boy today! (Pretty sure he’s a lab/dane mix). His name was batman, but I changed it to Indy :) I’m not a big superhero fan, but I do love Indiana jones
Shelter asked us to. They told us the owner had to surrender her because he was moving abroad, and didn't want his nephews to find out about it online (it's a local shelter). We honestly wouldn't have changed it if they hadn't asked. We also have a cat that I got from an old colleage who was also moving away, and we kept his name.
So our lovely dog went from Fiji to Yuffie. 2 days in she knew it perfectly already.
Edit: dog tag
My doggie has a thousand nicknames, “farty chicken” “boo boo” “wooves” “boop nose” His real name is Barney
Max to Watson. Our last black lab was Sherlock so Watson was a natural progression
Edit: both were rescues and as my Mom said "part of their history will always be a mystery."
Chocolate lab original named Cadbury changed to Murry
Renamed my female Beagle from Friday to Bubbles. All my dog’s name starts with B.
Beckie (mixed), Bingo (Beagle) and Buddy (Golden Retriever). Miss them everyday :(
she was named Pilot…now she is Cupcake. because she is so sweet
He was called Diablo (after the car). He had no recall whatsoever and we decided we could not be shouting “DIABLO” when a dirty great big German Shepherd was running towards strangers. He’s now called Dibbs, DibbyDobs or Little Shit, depending on what he’s up to.
Luca -> Dobby
I adopted a corgi/lab mix who's name was Starscream. I ended up changing it to Apollo. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy transformers... just not for the name of a dog
Simba, to Checo! Simba is a super overused name in my country and I had a somewhat irrational dislike for it.
The story about the name Checo is kind of funny. I wanted to just call him Perro, but Checo Perez is the name of a racing driver in an F1 team I like—so now Checo Perro is my dog’s official name.
Ozzy Pawsbourne, the Prince of Barkness, as Nova until he was five-months-old. Nova is too close to “No”, a word Lab pups hear a lot. Plus, frankly, we didn’t like it as a name.
Rescued as "scamp" at roughly age 6. Changed to Champ, because new life, new attitude.
He’s a lab mix we got same day and we suspect the other part is pitbull with how bulky he is getting. We got him like a month ago. His initial name when we got him was Sauerkraut but parents did not like that name. So, his name is Ozymandias, or Ozzie for short. Chose the name because I think the poem is pretty cool.
This is Zelda (formerly Abbie), my lab/staffie mix. Luckily she was only 4 months old when we got her, so I don’t think she’d even learned her shelter-given name.
No offense to any Abbies out there, but I’m not a fan of normal people names for dogs unless they really fit for some reason. Both my wife and I are big Legend of Zelda fans so it was an easy choice.

This was Whisky, who mixed well with water and rocks and was a good time all around. She was Charlotte for the first two years of her life, and when I found her at the pound.
