Sometimes it's hard to tell when they are little. I really enjoyed watching my vet and his vet tech arguing over the sex of my kitten ๐๐โโฌ but she was gray. MOST calicos are female, so it's a reasonably safe bet she's a girl. Looks like Maggie to me.
The tortie/calico gene is sex-linked. It needs two X chromosomes to occur. The average male cat has one X chromosome (XY) so cannot be tortie/calico.
However, male calicos can occur rarely if the cat has Klinefelter Syndrome, which causes a male cat to have two X chromosomes (XXY). With two X chromosomes present, the male cat has the ability to be calico/tortie, but Klinefelter Syndrome also increases the chances of certain medical conditions.
That is almost guaranteed to be a little girl! While that coat marking (calico) can occur in male kittens it is a rare genetic mutation where they have an extra female chromosome. Essentially they are physically male but genetically half and half (XXY chromosomes instead of XX or XY), they are also always sterile.
Definitely confirm gender if you care about girl/boy having the โcorrectโ gender name. If this baby is a boy then super rare special little one ๐ฅฐ
As others have said, 99% this is a girl. Either way, gender neutral silly names that they reminded me of: Anchovy, Martini, Mushi, Felony, Tuesday, US Postal System
Are you absolutely possible that's a male? Only about 1/3000 calicos are male. You'll also need to keep an eye on him if he is male, make calicos can be more prone to health issues as I've recently learned, due to the genetic sequence required to have both male parts and a calico coloring
Him? Are you sure? I thought calicos were female
