So I started a new job a little over a year ago. It’s an IT management position and it pays well. From day one my days have been insane, averaging 10 meetings per day. When I have 5 meetings in a day I’m pumped up. This is the first job I’ve had that offers a pension and you’re vested after 5 years. I’ll have to dig up how much I’m vested after 5 years. I’m just starting to wonder if it’s worth it. I get zero movement the entire day, I’m sitting in front of a screen from 7:45 to 5ish daily. Some day are shorter but that’s the average. I know pensions are unheard now a days. So I’m sure the retired version of me would probably be pissed off if I leave sooner. I’m curious what other people have done, have you worked at a job that offered a pension and realize it just wasn’t worth it.
Wondering how all this played out OP?
I’m still at the same job. It got pretty bad a few months ago that it started to impact my personal life. I had a conversation to my boss which seemed to help some. I have 9 meetings today so I guess that’s less than 10! I did decide to have no team meetings on Fridays. I can control my meetings but not everyone else’s. Honestly I don’t see myself staying for the pension. I’m getting married in two months so after that big change I’ll most likely start looking again.
Congrats on the marriage!
I’m in a similar boat. Pension with almost 5 years in. I guess I should stay until I’m totally vested (I think 5 years also). That many meetings is crazy, but I also haven’t worked a tech/ IT job. My brother is a higher up product manager and is always in meetings… hopefully you’ll be able to find something more your style. And at the end of the day, a pension doesn’t “go bad”, right? So technically you could have a pension and 401k/ etc… right? (I feel like I should know these things!).
