Agreed. For sure put some respect on Ramsay Bolton's contract
His contract Reeks
Lol so glad this is still a thing
They're probably using his regular season numbers instead of playoffs
Fuck if that's our worst contract, im fucking laughing
So many huge contracts signed today. I find it hard to believe 1.45M for Janmark is one of the worst lol
Honestly so many are guys under 2 mil so what a shit model this is. Just because a guy is valued at 1 and getting 1.5, the percentages are instantly wild.
Perry, Desharnais, Janmark, None of these deals are crazy
Tbf this post says nothing about how good or bad the model is, since OP's application of it is so flawed
Ya I find it hard to believe a $1.45m contract for literally anyone is gonna be "one of the worst" contracts unless the category is "Worst Contracts Under $1.5m".
Especially when tanev and OEL deals happened
That’s “Stanley Cup Champion” OEL
Paying someone until they are 41 is better than paying a 4th liner an extra 500k for a year or two
What?
Elite PK is worth 1.5 mil easy
/s was missing
Oh my bad
Seems like everyone read it the wrong way haha
Weird, it was very obvious sarcasm lol
Don't you mean your worst contract signed today
Yah this list loses all credibility if it’s calling that one of the worst signed today. Perry was a weird signing but much worse was handed out today.
Their fake analytics lol… this is just nonsense
Right? He could earn way more.
I miss janmark. Dude worked so hard
This would be far more valuable as raw dollar figure instead of percentage.
Overpaying a league min guy by 400k would show up as worse than overpaying a 6M guy by 2.5M even though the latter is far worse. Especially when you factor in term on bigger contracts
Not to mention contracts created to meet the cap floor and for maybe 2 other reasons
Or getting a 1.4M player for 1M, which is why Carrick is on the best contracts
How to overdo advanced stats, pictured
It’s not even advanced state, it’s just projection cap hit divided by actual cap hit
Which makes small overpays on short term depth deals look worse than big overpays on long term contracts, which is the exact opposite of reality
Or similarly for the other side, small discounts on shorter deals. I have a hard time picturing Gustavsson being one of the steals of FA.
Or Sam Carrick??????
Super shrewd observation here dude. Raw dollars would make more sense cuz ya if you overpay a guy worth $850k by giving him $1m that’s basically meaningless, but you give a $5m player $5.5m it’s a higher % but bigger impact on the cap.
Edit; realized you said the exact same thing below. Niceeee math.
You mean that the Blackhawks didn't pull off a massive coup by signing a fringe NHL player to an $800k contract?
That's disappointing. Now I need to go and apologize to my neighbors for the celebratory gunshots I fired into the air.
NEVER apologize for celebratory gunshots
It's too late. I already fired a volley of apologetic gunshots.
Worst one on here is Lomberg who only got 2x2, really not the end of the world.
Especially when you consider how much cap we still have
And he’s fucking awesome
And he is just a good likeable dude
When you sign a $2.5mil goaltender who is the best you've signed in years and it's still considered an overpay.
You wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me
well it's official, girgensons is our stamkos replacement
I've been saying this for years. Nobody listened to me.
This is the worst use of analytics I've ever seen lol
Brossoit is not an overpay imo.
That’s not how you use the colour green
That's not how you use the word color.
In US English, “color” (no “u”) is the correct spelling. In UK English, “colour” (with a “u”) is standard.
Yep, was just making a joke. Swing and a miss I guess!
I enjoyed the flavour of your joke - not a favourite, but worth the acknowledgement. Quite likeable, and no judgement from me.
I should have cancelled the comment, eh?
Janmark does not deserve to be on this list. Dude is a playoff beast
Also doesn’t factor in Edmundsons PO Crosschecks per 60/min
I couldn't care less that Zucker is overpaid. He's on a 1-year contract and we have tons of space. These charts should take term and age into account instead of just AAV.
This is ridiculous lol
lol I know. In what world is Noah Gregor the third best LW signing? This is just absurd.
And Sam Carrick the 4th best center signing
Half of those bad contracts aren't even that bad. Yet Chandler fucking Stephenson isn't listed as one of the worst?
Source: AFPAnalytics. Remind me to forever disregard this joke of an analytic in the future.
In our defense, we still arent really competing and they're both roster fillers.
Sharks seeing they have two of the worst contracts:
Right? How are we supposed to hit the cap floor?
Yeah but Noah Gregor is one of the best ones! He must be good
Kunin is only for a year and Wennberg is only for 2 so it ain’t to bad tbh
This is high octane bullshit
Dumbest list I’ve seen in a while.
Kunin's contract is for one year. I'm not going to pretend like he's "worth $2.75 million" but it's really not going to have any negative impact on our cap situation. I guess that's not to specifically say that this post is wrong, but in the spirit of "worst contract of the off-season" I really don't think this is very consequential at all.
Sharks just trying to get the Cap floor
Can't be on the worst signing when you signed no one
We got 2 goalies for the price of one basically
Can’t complain lol
I feel like it kinda makes more sense to show these as an absolute value instead of a percent. Like a guy who should be making 1m instead of 2m, is less bad for your cap situation than a guy who should be making 3 making 5.
Why is this organized like a 20 man team? It doesn’t really make sense to do that lol
Wennberg? Sharks need to hit the cap floor. Not like theyll need the money for the next two years.
This is why you dont let analytic nerds run the league, then you get this stupid shit haha
I'd argue this person is not an analytics nerd at all because the data is easily proven unusable
Not on either. I'll take that.
Understand, this must be awkward as Toronto fans have no experience with this scenario . . .
Toronto actually hasn’t really signed any “bad” contracts that would show up on things like this. Besides the Reaves deal from last year, I can’t remember any actual “bad” contracts they have signed at least within the Matthews era
As a Ranger fan, I'm trying to imagine what that's like.
At least the Rangers haven’t made any “bad” signings today according to this thing. They actually made a “good” one if you put any stock into what the pic above is trying to say
Which is exactly why I put no stock into this
Does Zaitsev and Marleau count?
Those were both signed in 2016/17, two GMs ago. And neither has been on the team for 5+ years now.
Still were part of the Matthews era though
Slavin was by far the best contract of the entire day today
In this case % is probably the worst way to analyze how bad or good a contract is. It should be presented in straight cap money. A 1M$ player payed 2M$ is so much less of a problem than a 5M$ player payed 7.5M$.
This is a really bad way to quantify how good or bad a contract is. An unremarkable fourth-liner making $1M as opposed to $1.5M wouldn't be a better contract than a superstar getting like $7M instead of $10M just because it's a farther percentage from the projection.
The day’s not even done and we already have a best/worst?
“The off-season”
Noah Gregor, such a monster signing, congrats Ottawa. Weird chart.
I think these would be more useful if they were weighted for contract length and percentage of the cap used. I just can't see how that many 1 and 2 year contracts (many of them low value) can rate that poorly given that they so easy to get away from. Bad contracts to me are the ones with significant money and term that run real risks of seeing that player on the buyout list long before it's completed.
Term and age are really important factors that are not being considered here.
This must be th chart that Francis used.
I think the Montour deal might be the worst overall and it's not even on the list.
Term needs to be factored in for this to have value. Nobody is going to convince me that the Tanev deal wasn't one of the worst, for example, and the term is a key component in that assessment.
This is an example of needing to look at your results and realizing you're maybe not approaching it the right way. When the majority of you're best signings are 4th line guys that should be a sign.
Janmark slander will NOT be tolerated
Vaak HM
Clearly Verbeek is cookin' and its all a master plan
How is Janmark’s contract bad wtf?
1 in each, could be worse
Lmfao edmunson
I’d take the team of “worst” contracts over the “best” lol
Dumba is not the worst Dallas defensive signing?
Free Agency is one day old. Are you going to update these charts on a daily basis? If so, I'd recommend all of the suggestions in ITT.
Worst contract team would smoke best contract team.
We're just aiming for "fewest contracts in the off-season"
Not us - we’re aiming for most contracts with lowest average value.
Terrible definition of best and worst
Not every dumb little graphic you make is worth sharing on the internet.
This is not good.
This is arguably the dumbest shit I've ever seen and I've seen myself drunk off boxed wine the night before a 5am shift....
No Bruins on either side, classic Sweens 😎
No notes
Wtf is this. Any “model” that has kapanen and mike fucking Reilly as the best contracts is immediately disregarded
You can't convince me that 1 year of Martinez is worse than 3 years of OEL and 6 years of Tanev.
the problem with drouin is his attitude dude is a frenchie through and through
Yeah…. This overlooks playoff performance, leadership abilities, and a lot of other stuff…
News of Glen Sathers 'rumored' retirement might be true if the NY Rangers only appear on the Best side.
I know it's only July 1 but this has never happened and Ranger fans have no idea how to respond.
can't be on the bad contract side if you don't give out any contracts [Chris Drury tapping his forehead]
It's about time is all I'm saying.
After a generation of July 1's saying "we gave how much to WHO?" - I'll take it!
Janmark being on there but not Nurse is criminal
Contracts signed today.
That’s Florida panthers legend Nurse to you!

In what world is the janmark contract bad
