Sunlight is only available for 8 minutes in the summer
And when it does get here it may force you and everyone around you to go taps aff.
A piece is a sandwich
Our water is shit hot
We get 4 days of summer, non-sequential, and we've already had half of them.
If you’re coming from the south of England, you should probably be aware that the air temperature is around five degrees cooler here.
Honestly Glasgow might not be the best place to be, particularly not the city centre.
Between the breweries and the orange walks it can get pretty smelly.
And don’t forget parkhead 😅
What about IRA walks?
'messages' for grocery shopping
Anyone know why?
Because way back in the days before deliveroo yer maw used to send you to the local shops with an itemised note, saying things like, "Milk, Bread, Teabags, tenner bag of heroin, open blade razor for the street fighting, nine bottles of Buckfast, Bad Aids medicine, Kit Kats, six slices of chopped ham"...you know the sort of thing.
where I'm from that's called a shopping list. Love it though
Don't go to the blue lagoon
More fun to wait, and possibly drunk…
It’s a really expensive chip shop ☺️
Come to Northern Ireland and sign up
Its the worst place to get to deep fried heart disease. Dare some one you hate to get a pizza from there. Its a deep fried pizza base with a picture of a nice pizza on top and with enough oil dripping from it you could waterproof a donkey jacket.
Don’t know if it applies down south, but the weather in Glasgow changes every 14.5 minutes (on average). You need to be open to every possible weather scenario at the drop of a hat.
Having moved from England, this is the important knowledge.
The weather isn't shit in the English way (slow long days of rain, still cloud etc) but it is far more a case that it changes on a cycle so you need to be ready with sunglasses and suncream but also a waterproof jacket and shoes just in case.
Honestly apart from November and December the weather hasnt been as bad as I expected and the summer is great
Yeah, a friend of mine moved here during the winter and didn’t bring any sunglasses because she expected it to be dark and dreary. She instantly regretted this!
If you want to practice sword fighting, there are a number of HEMA clubs around
Don't vote tory (or at least if you do, don't tell anyone)
You'll do just fine up here, then!
Nobody is going to do anything if they did tell somebody they voted for the tories.
Yep. Most people on this sub can only imagine what happens in the outside world.
Boris Johnson is a cunt.. and, you should vote yes..
You’ll love it. - don’t eat at blue lagoon - be careful of your answer if you’re asked who you support - Glasgow is great to see other parts of Scotland, you will be able to travel if that’s your thing - Watch Still Game if you haven’t already - you can drink from the tap here
You might also want to be aware that Glasgow people are aggressively friendly. And the word “ya cunt” especially when said with a smile is often like English people saying “mate”.
Nice one
• In England when you ask for directions, people show you. In Glasgow, people TAKE you.
• You'll see some cool Harry Potter or Game of Thrones celebs around.
• When moving in a Tenement flat, check EVERYWHERE for mice droppings / poison trays.
• South side is the trendiest place currently (however be extra careful about mice-related advice above)
• Don't listen to people from the West End when they talk bad about the South Side
• You'll need very good curtains because there's no night in summer
• You'll need earplugs too because seagulls will drive you crazy at 3am
As an Englishman myself, south side over west end anyday. Cheaper accommodation and queen's park is the bomb
Keep and eye on www.glasgowlife.org.uk/whats-on for community events and festivals. Celtic connections is really good for live traditional music. Make sure you go to a ceilidh at some point and a trad session. They used to do a session at babbity bowster, don’t know if they still do.
I moved to Glasgow 10years ago.. I love it except the weather ...
That's good. I've lived all over UK and Fife.. Glasgow is hands down best place. People are awesome and welcoming. Hope u love it as much as I do
Don’t move to Glasgow place is disgusting filled with junkies too
Glasgow is a great city it has so many good things going for it, and the people are very welcoming, youll love it here.
It's (technically) illegal to drink alcohol outside in Glasgow, and the shops stop selling alcohol after 10pm! I moved here 2 years ago from England and still forget about this sometimes haha.
Otherwise amazing city 😊
Learn the language!
If you’re from coming from south England you’re going to struggle. Northerners have a better understanding of words and quickness of speech. For context I’m half Scottish and come from Newcastle and can understand 70% of talk. More so when I’m drunk.
Well if it’s someone drunk then probs a wee chuckle then run like feck to avoid talking to them. The best thing to do is approach everyone new with a smile unless they look like their causing trouble then just avoid them 💁🏻♂️😂 otherwise a quick “i’m sorry i’m still trying to catch up” is fine lol
Seriously though, seek out some media made by Glaswegians and try to get used to the accent and vocabulary. My partner and I did this between visiting and moving and it helped quite a bit. Still couldn't understand one of our movers, though!
Be aware that there are a small minority who physically hate the English accent. I’ve been in a few situations that sadden me given that half my family come from Glasgow area.
My husband is English & so so loved by me(obv) & everyone he's met in his life since we moved back here from down south. He's literally best. BEST.
However ....
See when he says yogurt tho (yawgurt)...not to be dramatic... it makes me want to die. When he tries saying yo-gurt, somehow it's even worse. It's been 15 years.
Everyone in England has a cockney accent like everyone in Scotland has a Weedgie accent.
'Non-descript' to you, you mean. I guess 'Indian' is an accent to you too, eh?
How many different English accents are there?! And which one do you think is brutal? Maybe you've just got a problem with English people.
The only time it doesn’t rain is when it snows
swearing is like a comma f*ck don’t take it to heart
And if you fucking do your fucking fucked, ya dobber
It's the East of Glasgow, most generously described as anything from Calton eastwards but some would place the boundary further East than that. It generally has more poverty than the west end of the city and therefore is the target of dismissive and tedious classist attitudes from the overprivileged as demonstrated in the post you are replying to.
Ask people what part of Glasgow they are from if you like.
I remember someone telling me that the Calton was now actually 'Merchant City East'. Going up in the world.
It is becoming increasingly gentrified. Especially around the Barras. All the old trad pubs & greasy spoons are slowly disappearing and craft beer & brioche burger type joints are metastasising from the city centre/merchant city. In a few years Calton will be another trendy area and locals will be priced out.
Agreed. Ultimately there must be a stop though, when will our need for brioche buns, avo smash and vegan bakeries be satisfied? When Shettleston becomes Merchant City Very East?
Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the occasional craft beer and brioche burger but we don't need more of that at the expense of local heritage & character.
😭😭
Watch out for the Jimmy Krankie clone leading the country!
Reddit has a search function
If someone mentions diluting juice they mean squash
Make sure you have emergency beers in the flat as you can't buy booze from the shop after 10pm
"legally" you can't drink in the Park in Glasgow but everyone does you just gotta be sneaky about it.
If you're buying somewhere to live, don't tell anybody. Based on this sub, people who live in Glasgow have got a real problem with 'rich English people buying up all the flats'.
she being quite wealthy said that some of her friends have made the move up there because it’s “up and coming” or something along those lines.
This is precisely the thing mentioned previously. Glasgow is being heavily gentrified atm. If it keeps on, it'll be a buy-to-let shit hole (or paradise depending on your level of cunterry).
Avoid everything.
Full of addicts. Absolute shit hole.
Leave your wallet at home that’s what all the locals seem to do they love a bargain, when they run out of square sausage its a piece and oxygen for the kids packed lunch
oh ffs
irn bru and tunnocks carmel wafers are the norm
Walk on the right side of the pavement always!!
I believe he's joking. People from not-here often walk on the wrong side of the pavement, which causes a degree of grief to the natives, I have found out
Never ask someone what school they went to. Sadly it’s still seen as a way of finding out if you’re catholic or Protestant. Bigotry alive and kicking in this neck of the woods I’m afraid.
Absolute tosh.
It's good.

Can I ask what area you're moving to? Might be able to help with some recommendations for shops or places to eat, also are you a student?
Okay well welcome to Glasgow (or in September lol).
Keep in mind that rent gets higher the closer to the city centre, so if you live just outside the city, even half an hour commute it can take your rent down £200. Don't know if you're interested in the buses, but First Bus have the most regular services, a monthly bus pass is £54 I think, cheaper if you're a student (around £47, use the app, don't buy from a shop they add a fee).
Tell GF to keep an eye out for student deal, lots of shops in the city centre will offer discounts for students. The best pubs and clubs for people new to the area are all at the top end of Sauchiehall street - pro tip, Taco Bell shuts at 4am so leave a club at 3 and head for some food before going home...
Make friends with your neighbours, even if it's a flat try and be nice to the ones on the same floor. They'll take parcels in for you saving trips to the post office depot and keep an eye on your place.
Paisley and Clydebank are good areas too! Good links into Glasgow from there, lots of hidden places in Paisley to check out.
if you cant get close to the city centre, consider being as close to a train station as possible. trains up here are actually top notch and super fast. takes about 30-45 mins on bus into town from where i am, but only 5-10 on the train ! and its super cheap.
also keep in mind buses do NOT give out change, and buy ur tickets on the app to save time.
Do you know what area you're moving to? Can recommend bars and restaurants and takeaways!
Okay! I'd recommend paesano, sugo, bucks bar, bread meats bread, mezcal all for kinda casual eating (won't spend more than 50 quid for two here). For special occasions Spanish Butcher is excellent, as is ox and Finch. For brunch, Wilson Street pantry, singl-end and Mesa (in Dennistoun but worth the 30 min walk from town). If you like Indian you won't struggle for good restaurants here!
