I know nothing of Fallout and thought it was supposed to be a zombie.
Ghouls are radiation zombies, basically.

Forgot the hastag bro /jk
I was so disappointed that the hashtag made it big and bold. Kinda ruined it, but whatever.
You can put a backslash before text to get rid of Reddit formatting
\#notallghouls
Becomes
#notallghouls
Well would you look at that. Thanks for the info.
Reddit uses markup. There are all sorts of neat formatting tricks you can use.
oh look it works

Ohh was not aware hashtags did that sorry bro
Put a single slash before it and it won't read as a markup

...See? Like that!
Yes all ghouls, if they are sentient or not doesn't change the fact that they are Radiation zombies.
The whole meaning behind "zombie" is to lack sentience.
The definition of ghoul is sentient zombie, feral are still sentient they just have rabies or something that made them go crazy. They're all zombies that can think in the same way humans are monkies
Ferals are not sentient. That's what Feral means.
- The mind as capable of feeling
I guess those pain sounds are just an auditory hallucination. Zombies can't feel anything, feral can, if you listen to the people becoming feral in the holotapes they're still people they're just going insane. You can be insane and still think/feel.
Lol they aren't zombies because zombies mean they died and came back to life lol wtf are all y'all talking about
Ghouls are living zombie cannibals atleast in English lore in Arabic they're very beautiful women who eat people. They're living dead from graveyards who can walk around talk and eat people no zombie can dig up corpses ghouls can. They're just an advanced zombie and if you did a quick Google search you can see that. You can become undead without dying, liches do that all the time it's an ascent it doesn't require you to die but you become undead. Ghouls just use radiation instead of necrotic energy
I think you're misinterpreting who I am. I mod and work on the wiki for fallout lol. The lore as well sir, I've been modding and playing fallout since the late 90s. I'm sorry but you are flat out wrong.
In lore: from FO1 to FNV it's been started they are people who are not dead..flat out. what happened to them was essentially them devolving into a feral state the radiation has an effect on their mind and skin. That's why there are so many sane ghouls. By the look of your comment it seems you have no idea about the lore or anything relating to fallout. You can go to my profile and see how active I am in that community
I'm not even sure what a ghoul from Arabic has to do with anything
Also ghoul don't eat flesh for the most part they eat whatever they can get their hands on. Also they weren't even called ghouls until FO2.
So what is a flesh eating undead that does have sentience? A shaved werewolf? A rotten vampire? I think zombie is still the best word for it even if it's not the exact definition
In any other lore, a sentient undead that still eats flesh is called… a ghoul. So, they were already appropriately named.
Right? A zombie has been a mindless flesh eater for almost a century in pop culture.
Revenant, or ghoul.
Kill all ghouls
ghoulsrightdon'tmatter!
shut the fuck up Tenpenny
r/foundthebrotherhoodofsteel
Alghouls? That’s a whole different monster lol
notlikeotherghouls ?
Damn bro, inapprops. You can't just use the z-word like that
Naa they're not zombies..they aren't even dead they are feral humans
I mean zombie is a very common slur for ghouls hell they even call eachother zombies sometimes in 1 iirc
Hey! Zombie is their word!
I think it's like the n word for them.
It’s someone who’s been exposed to too much radiation, they’ve been twisted and live indefinitely until killed. They constantly have to worry about turning Ferral as too much more radiation does that and they become mindless killing machines.
AFAIK that’s purely a show innovation. In the games sentient ghouls don’t need to take drugs to avoid going feral and regularly get exposed to high doses of radiation without going feral. Some ghouls even live in the blast zone of nuclear bombs. It’s more like once you’re turned, you either retain your sanity or you go feral. But Bethesda doesn’t care about internal consistency.
I never said about the drug. I looked it up, I was wrong. Radiation was suggested in world but never confirmed in lore however it is confirmed in Fallout 3 that it has to do with someone’s mental state on whether they turn feral or not.
not that different tbh
Yes, but the bottom guy is incredibly accurate to how they're seen in the games at least.
Ghouls are heavily radiated humans. The radiation mutated the body to look like that and they are basically zombies with varying degrees of consciousness.
Feral are the closest to "true zombies"
Thought it was supposed to be some sort of scary clown.
I thought it was some third-rate iteration of Joker
I thought that was just a very dirty joker.
Its called Nuka Break and its really good!
and you'd also have to tell me the bottom one is a ghoul and not some guy who lost his nose in a fire
seriously, dude is so smooth that he looks like he'd be called a smoothskin
I think the visual of the show is more realistic, the fan made is cool, but looks like a mask.
I thought it was a slipknot mask at first.
You too?
I push my fingers into my, pies.
*ass
**our ass
I didn't think U2 wore masks
I see what you did there.
Fan made typically are wealthy so yeah it probably is a mask and you could probably find it at spirit Halloween
It wasn’t a mask. They used an actual ghoul for the role…
Take your upvote and get out of here.
Hence the rich corporation part. Why is everyone just ignoring that lmao
Yeah, obviously the rich corporation did it better, what are you saying?
I think it’s referencing Warner Bro’s copyrighting a 10-15 year old fan film because it has the same name as a show they’ve just come up with.
But that situation was about Lotr, not Fallout. I think this is just comparing the makeup.
Fair, thought it could go either way
This isn’t even touched by WB? I’m confused?
Never said it was, doesn’t have to be related to reference it.
What project were you referring to then? Just curious
‘The hunt for Gollum’
Ahh I did hear about that, and I would agree that’s bullshit.
The show was great..was there something better I missed?
It’s an old fan film you can find on YouTube called Nuka Break about a Vault Dweller, a pre war ghoul, and an ex slave. OP seems to be implying the ghoul makeup was better in said fan film than in the Amazon series.
I think it’s referencing Warner Bro’s copyrighting a 10-15 year old fan film because it has the same name as a show they’ve just come up with.
Fallout has been around for longer than 10-15 years though
This is just another child posting irrelevant crap on Reddit about something they know nothing about.
Why assume it's a child? Almost assuredly most of the idiots on this site are adults, who can drive and vote.
I know nothing about fallout, the one WB copyrighted was LOTR. I imagine this meme is saying whoever made the fallout show has or might copyright a show with a similar plot/character to the new show.
Thats what I thought it was talking about as well
I do hate it when they copyright or pull down fan films. Fan films should receive some kind of specific fair use protection where nobody fucks with them, period.
Me making a controversial post on reddit then putting my phone up my ass
You're out of your mind if you think the one on top looks better. Besides, did you really want to have a character with actual rotting flesh falling from his face being filmed from up close? I sure as hell don't
Besides, did you really want to have a character with actual rotting flesh falling from his face being filmed from up close?
I mean, yeah that would be metal as hell
I mean yes, but the minimal decay fits for him. He’s usually kept buried and pumped full of Rad-Away, remember? Am I the only one that noticed the Rad-Away bags? He’s actively taking efforts to limit decay. He’s one of the smartest ghouls in Fallout. He has managed to keep himself looking and mentally like a fresh ghoul while being a pre-war ghoul via applied science and not caring about just living a life 24/7. He takes sleep comas when he isn’t working. Of course he looks way fresher than average. That is literally the point of being buried with Rad-Away IV. He stays in a coma and doesn’t get exposed to the elements. A lot of ghoul rot comes from a lack of proper healing and daily wear and tear. By spending a ton of time like that, he doesn’t have that issue. His lack of decay is explained via skillful visual storytelling and lore knowledge.
I thought that was irradiated blood, yk since radiation heals ghouls(depends on where you look but that's what I've learned) I don't think rad away would work after a point unless they are constantly undergoing nuclear fission. But yeah my reason was glowing blood packs, your reason is rad away, still the same results and reasoning for home being relatively clean.
I figured that since ghoulification is caused by radiation and they get ghoulier from radiation despite healing from it (with it also causing additional mental decay and presumably being responsible for their natural healing getting worse) Rad Away would keep the ghoulification at bay. Since the radiation healing also keeps them from dying, I took it as there being a sweet spot where you could keep the rads low enough that you aren’t getting worse, and also comatose. Too much, dead ghoul. Too little, conscious and decaying ghoul. Ghoul homeostasis.
Actually I really like that idea, just self-preserving your mentality through coma, especially since loneliness is/was a major cause of becoming feral, at least in the past, and maybe a way to preserve your sanity without using much of any of the drug.
My only issue is with him being buried. You seem to imply he did it himself or allowed others to do it, but that doesn't make sense to me. He doesn't seem to be the person to put his life in another person's hands. And he can't escape on his own, someone has to dig him out.
My head cannon was he got half life styled put into storage for a later date, by either a work acquaintance or because he was betrayed or something. Overall my favorite character because he has understanding of the prewar and post war, and overall had more history than any other character, also the longest lasting goals.
i did, Would really add to the fact that Fallout is Not just happy go lucky and has horror elements too.
I mean yeah I loved how in fallouts 1 and 2 they were basically falling apart it's cool as hell and really feels like fallouts grim as hell but undercut with comedy especially when you get a ghoul like Harold
The first one just looks ugly and not in the hey that's a ghoul ugly... it just doesn't look good
Eh, it’s like comparing fo3 and FNV ghouls to fo4… same things better graphics… in this case budget
Exactly, the top is a new Vegas story spinoff so it’ll look like new Vegas. Fallout 4 is more “modern” looking so they went with that art style it’s pretty simple
That’s a really good way to put it
I still won’t defend the shows somewhat retcons and depictions of certain factions I.e the BoS that I’ve heard tho
Honestly… I’d say the religious theme of the BoS is heavily exaggerated… but they kinda function like that I’m the games… but hey everyone’s got their opinions
I never saw the show yet I figured it would be a “shit show” literally like most game movie tie ins lol but I’ve been tempted just heard some troubling things is all
If you know fallout lore well it might have some moments that piss you off… but I’ve seen it, it’s pretty good
Ah see I kinda know my lore so I knew it might be bad lol I’ll still give it a shot when I have time for sure tho
I do recommend seeing it
Raul looks like a ghoul more than John handcock and he still looks like a ghoul.
Ghouls used to be ugly and it was justifiable to shoot them on sight because they were pretty damn close to feral looking. Look up Set from fallout 1
I’ve played a bit of fo1… yeah they were mostly just a corpse back then… I do think they should’ve stuck with Fo1’s design
I remember that web series. It was also pretty fantastic
I thought the show did Ghouls really well. I thought the show was just really well done as a whole
Eh i didn't like the whole ghoul drug thing I liked how they were originally where nobody knew what caused ghouls to go freak and attack people really made you understand why people were standoffish or outright hateful towards ghouls
Come on. They did a great job of that show. His make up was great. Not to mention the actor wearing it is fucking superb
Honestly I don’t give a fuck…if they make an Elder Scrolls series and it kicks game of thrones’ ass I’m also down…
What point are you trying to make
“Im a gamer, hear me complain”
I'm sorry, the above one is clearly a mask
Looks like they repainted a Heath Legder Joker mask
This is the first negative thing I’ve seen someone say about this show.
The rich corporation has made it glamored up
I also didn't like the shows ghoul at 1st. But I feel it was the right call. I still think I'd have made his nose hole a bit smaller, but the top one isn't better in any way.
both are cool. top looks more like a rob zombie movie maniac though.
Like hell there’s gonna be some fallout for this, this take is downright delusional
Bottom one is vastly better..
Bot post
Nuka Break forever love all the characters and no bullshit lore changing mcguffins
Rip Ben 😞
Is this supposed to imply that the top one is better? Cause it looks like a cheap mask from a pop-up Halloween store. Now, Walton's ghoul looks a bit too clean in this one particular scene but I'll gladly take it over $8 halloween prop.
The top image does not look like a ghoul. It looks like a cheap Halloween mask.
The top one looks like shit
What's your point? Never saw any creature resembling the shot you provided of the fanmade short in any Fallout game. Goggins looks exactly like a ghoul.
Worst take ever, you must be a.i
Do not like the fan made.
Looks nothing like the source material
They did a brilliant job making him look like a ghoul while still looking like his former self. Sorry dude, gotta hit the disagree button on this.
A fan film with a janky looking mask
A professionally produced show with high quality make up - plus the look is tweaked slightly to still be an obvious ghoul but to allow the actor to emote better and enhance his performance
The fan made looks worse?
For some reason people liked the bottom one more. I believe it’s mainly because it doesn’t scare, gross, or icks the audience. The actor’s facial features are also clearly visible so another reason this look got the green light. I remember a ton of the cast in Guardians of the galaxy didn’t like the heavy makeup and special effects it did to make them unrecognizable.
Nuka Break kept my attention. Episode 1 lost me at the sex scene in episode one. Twice.
I actually like ghouls from the show, I know that kind of cgi ain’t cheap and I’m glad they put effort into all parts of production
I don't understand why people continue to bitch about the design of the ghouls in the show, it looks almost one to one to the design of the ghouls in Fallout 4, just compare him to Hancock.
Yes the show did unsurprisingly better, don't hate on the fan product tho it's pretty solid
Rubber mask and pellet gun.
I think the current series is better in both visual, costume and character choosing. I really enjoy the show~
I remember seeing this meme posted before the TV series came out. I'm really glad everyone's perception changed because the comments did a full-blown 180
Assuming the point of the post is that he doesn't look that gross for a ghoul - I assumed that he's one of the best preserved ghouls in the show because he's "always been good at making money." Most other ghouls seemed to look a lot rougher than him because they can't pay to stay juiced up on ghoul drugs like he does.
The tv show was fine, story was good, literally felt like something a player would do the whole time, acting was good, writing and lore was pretty accurate, the Goul guy I'm thinking is too much of an asshole but that's just a me problem. So they got it right, idk what you are expecting.
The show is great tho
The top one looks like he could be apart of Slipknot
OP, do you have a link to the fan-made short? Don’t think I’ve ever seen it.
It isn't a short. It was a web series done a while back. Heard that the group that did it may be doing another soon.
Ty
Wow ty I was like what fan made fallout show I've never heard of hell yeah
Wasnt there 2? There was nuka break and the red star bottle cap one right?
Yeah and a few actual shorts that gave background on some of the characters from both.
Lighting helps. Goggs wasn't well lit for that, didn't show off much more than a missing nose, where as the shot from Nuca Cola had a few filters thrown in to make it desert like and he's not backlit by sky.
pushes glasses up nose in superior manner
Gamers just love an excuse to bitch i swear
Well... they both have skin, so who cares? Wrong either way
Hey, we're talking about a main character in a multimillion dollar production. They gotta make him fuckable even if he is partially decayed!
I don't know what op is trying to say here. Top one looks like a Halloween mask from Spencer's and the bottom one is fantastic.
The absence of the nose is really the defining characteristic of the ghouls more than anything. Though I would say that what the show needs would be to darken the sclera just like the games, but then again the sclera is very important in conveying facial expression.
Nice.
Is that leatherface?
Fan film looks like the hills have eyes, fallout show looks like ghouls have no nose, which they don't
Amazon perfectly calculated a ghoul that women would thirst for. It's called marketing.
Ok, now you reminded me to watch Nuka Break
One belongs in a horror show the other is designed to appeal to the masses.
Maybe it’s just that photo, but the top one looks awful.
If that’s who I think it is, there’s other times the mask looks better. Just look for the YouTube series “Nuka break”
these hollywood ghouls imposing unrealistic beauty standards on us normal people.
Other ghouls look worse than Cooper, who seems to consume an insane amount of drugs to look like he does.
My boyfriend has been complaining ever since it came out that the ghouls don't look enough like acid attack victims.
In my defense, I'm a fan of Walton. So, 👍
What’s wrong with the show version?
The top one looks like a cheap mask from a halloween store. The makeup for the ghoul is great. google what "adaptation" means if you don't understand why the show doesn't look identical.
Fallout new vegas
Neither of them look bad
Bro is onto nothing
The one on the top doesn't looking a fallout ghool
It's more dithrennt from a normal human but that's not what the ghools look like
Exactly. Ghouls are supposed to look like walking corpses. Zombie is a legit slur against ghouls in the fallout universe and people regularly call ferals zombies.
I dont get it. Goggins looks like a typical ghoul from the games if you had to make it real. Dudes mask is cool but it's much more slipknot than a ghoul
“I hope this interaction doesn’t cause any fallout between us. Fallout New Vegas.”
The show's ghouls were perfectly fine. Almost 100% accurate to how they've been portrayed in FO4/FO76. The only thing I noticed that they missed was the dark schlera of the eyes, which I completely understand why they wouldn't go for in a live-action adaptation.
Is this supposed to be a knock on the show? Sorry I'm confused lol, the show looked really good in my opinion. Other ghouls looked different as well, really diverse look in my opinion and the ferals looked more ghoulish too. I feel like ghouls that haven't "turned" yet and look less decomposed.
Is this supposed to mean the first looks better? Did you play Fallout ever?
Where's bros nose 💀
Not even his mom could find his nose 💀
He left his nose back in class 💀
Hollywood also LOVES making sure you can tell what actor is in the makeup. Like their voice isn't enough, if you can't tell it's that actor, they will break the experience to let you know they paid extra for that well known actor.
Antman 3 for example. Could they have left MODOKS mask on the whole movie? Yes. But they need you to know the actor is that character, so why not have a goofy 1992 face stretch on a $200mil film?
Amazon did it better IMO
What's the implication here? That the top looks better? Because that shit looks like a Spirit Halloween mask
Fan made short is ass and cringe compared to the show made by said company
Granted in fallout 4 they toned down the ghoul horror and the show based it off of 4 design
Almost like the fans know the series they're a fan of know it better than a billion dollar corporation.
The people who think the top image looks better is exactly the reason we couldn’t have nice video game adaptations for the past 20 years
The top one looks like shit, why is this getting upvotes? Am I missing something?
The new one looks better lol. I couldn't tell you the fan film was a ghoul from fallout. Looks like a zombie extra from any zombie film.
That’s a rather clean looking full head of hair on that ghoul….
I don't hear enough people talk about how bad the eyes look on the TV show ghoul. The fully black eyes that ghouls had in 4 looked really good, and made the design look unnatural enough to feel like a ghoul and not just a human with burned skin. The reason the TV show ghoul looks so bad is because his eyes look too normal, which drives home the "this is just a dude without a nose" look.
Top one just looks bad. Reminds me of a low-budget Mad Max character.
Walton Goggins looks fricken great, and this kind of comparison really just shows how delusional the maker of this meme is.
HAH!
Top one looks like the ghoul mask from fallout 3 while the bott9m looks like a fallout 4 ghoul. I prefer the old, more disgusting looking ghouls
People really will gripe about anything. The show is fantastic.
Yes, and the show is better lol
The new big corp fallout is way better.
1 missing reply
You'd have to tell me the top one is a ghoul and not some rando horror monster in a mask.
