They should publish the API and keys and I'd make an app to do it and release it for free.
Or they could open-source the app.
Unlace it if you will
Relace
Yeah right. Nike isnt giving anything away for free
They're chopping employees and maintenance apparently.
Overbuilt inventory issues. Good ol retail is brutal and their DTC isnt growing like it used too.
Except for child labor costs
That’s not very business minded and synergistic of you
I remember Nike fuel band. What a great piece of hardware with fantastic integration with iOS. Just axed and everyone laid off on a moment's notice.
Nike must be trying to juice their numbers because they've recently laid off a LOT of people at their offices in Beaverton.
I’m unsure why so many companies are laying people off while reporting record profits. Like you suggested they must have been padding their numbers during covid and now that there’s a recession they are dropping the extra fat
Simple greed. They can't raise prices any more to boost profits, so the CEOs are cutting staff. By the time the company really starts to suffer from the loss of skill and profits collapse, the CEO will be retired or running another company into the ground.
I'd bet a nickel the current protocol on it is supremely deficient from a security standpoint and if they publish an API folks with figure out how to hack them and screw with other people's shoes.
Also responsibly opening it up requires additional resources, compared to just shutting down. Doubtful they see anything in it for them.
Should they? Yes.
Will they? Hell nah
They’d never do that. The IoT for shoes is an awful idea that reeks of nepobaby product managers and c-suite dumb dumbs scheming into a subscription model for shoes. Shoes as a service! Brilliant! And if they don’t pay their monthly fee, we lock them out of their shoes!
Regardless of the limited application and sheer idiocy of this sort of thing, I’d bet it’s shored up in copyright hell.
Can you imagine a world though where a pro athlete is wearing these and someone breaks into their locker during a game, unlocks their phone, and unties their shoes causing them to trip at an important moment?
“Manually Operated” shoelaces! 😂🤣😂🤣
Now they're just manually operated automated shoelaces
Like a stopped escalator.
Sorry for the convenience.
I used to love Mitch Hedberg.
I still do, but I used to as well
I've had it with this manual automation.
You make a loop de loop and pull.
Now your shoes are lookin’ cool!
Ya loop it ya swoop it ya pull
Isn’t this a Kanye song? With North?
Oh, you’re still using analog shoelaces 😒
We had those when I was a kid.
Spotify
Nike
They need to offer alternatives or put out stuff to the public domain when they do these things. Sustainability also involves maintenance of past products, digital or not.
Nike is historically massively interested in sustainability and ethics. /s
If they were smart they’d make it a subscription
Nah. Nobody would pay for that. The buttons on the shoes still work.
Make the buttons also a subscription
What’s wrong with you man? We already paying like an 3x markup from what they really cost. Why nickel and dime ppl? They should just keep the app free and maybe pay Lebron a little less.
What's wrong with you? He's looking out for the interests of the shareholders. The people that buy their products are money cows to be milked.
ONLY 3x, triple the price then, there’s loads of inflation.
Maybe it would be better to add some highly proprietary battery format. You can only get them in person, in store, but they come in a mixed pack for all the shoes, and there’s only a chance of getting the ones you need.
You're hired
3x markup from what they really cost
[Unhinged laughter]
Make the shoes a subscription
Make feet a subscription
Everyone else just gets stumps
I don’t really think “sustainability” is the right word here, but I get what you mean.
Sort if is if you want products to last more then a few years, sustainably also includes e waste
What's up with Spotify? I'm ootl
They sold a piece of hardware for listening to their service in your car, then suddenly announced that they were dropping support for the “Car Thing,” and turning the devices into bricks.
In response, users asked that Spotify open source the devices so that they could continue to use them, but Spotify did both agree to that.
They appear to have somewhat bowed to pressure and said that they would offer refunds, but as far as I can tell, they declined to say under what conditions they would do that.
Just when I thought my day couldn’t get any worse.
Imagine tripping because your shoe lacing app were discontinued
Imagine not being able to tie your shoelaces because you don’t have wifi
Imagine getting your shoes hacked because Nike couple afford maintaining the app
Tfw you see an army of shoes marching down the street like that one episode of Jimmy Neutron with the pants
Or your subscription expired
No worries, you can watch 5-8 of the 20-300 second ads for a free day of shoe lacing (front-facing camera required to ensure that you watch the ads)
Can't they just leave the app be? Even without updates, it'll still work for years to come.
That's roughly what they're planning to do. However the won't be available without side loading it and future Apple security updates and policies may cause the app to be disabled or deleted.
Both Apple and Google remove apps that don't get updated. I've had a few on the store and they don't care if the app continues to work properly and doesn't need an update. Updates are mandatory, I've republished a few without updates and they'll be fine for a year or so before they get removed again for lack of updates.
Are you sure about that? For example look at Nintype on iOS, last update was 5 years ago
Titanium Backup on Google Play - last update Nov. 2019
They make exceptions wherever they feel like it. It seems like if your app is popular enough they'll allow it to go unupdated for longer. Although even then it usually requires the dev to pay some attention as you'll have to agree to store changes and sometimes say your app is compliant with those changes.
Looks like Nike's making us work for that perfect fit now! Who needs a remote app when you can charm your sneakers into lacing themselves? Time to practice my shoe-whispering skills!
You can still use the buttons on the shoe to tighten and loosen. I have a pair. They actually fit very well and it’s nice just putting your foot in and having them have the same tightness every time you put them on. They are too damn loud though. I was showing people how they worked in my office and it sounded like a transformer transforming
it sounded like a transformer transforming
That actually sounds like a pro, not a con. "Walkbots transform!"
“Yeaaaah we got all the data we needed and are ready to present it to medical insurance companies so they can make adjustments to their podiatry sections.”
Hold up people were using an app to lace their shoes?
According to the article, the app also changed the shoe’s light colors.
disabled people exist
The shoes also autolace by pressing a button on them, which you can so it’s unlikely the app would’ve been much help. You’d have to be in a situation where you’re capable of putting the shoes on your feet but not of touching them or moving your feet, in which case, how did you put them on?
Okay?
So do Velcro and slip on shoes. How is that even easier to use an app
And they’re butt ugly. adapt shoes look way better. People with disabilities have no options usually and this gave them one.
I can see a future where you’ll need to pay a subscription fee to have tied shoes.
Yup, always the danger of anything app controlled. Doubly so when it's Apple, where side-loading is not exactly easy due to the iron grip the cold, dead hand of steve jobs that they insist on having on their OS. At least Android lets you tweak their OS a bit easier.
Feel like this is a Mitch Hedberg joke.
“Sorry for the inconvenience but your shoes remain shoes.”
Shoes don't break, they just become slippers.
People didn't want app controlled shoe laces? This is really surprising. /s
“But the shoes can still be manually operated .”
Ain’t the future grand?
I have these shoes wore them once and haven’t taken them out of the box in years
From back to the future to back of the closet
Who would use a smartphone to lace a shoe?
Someone who needs self lacing shoes my guy. There are millions of people who have disabilities that make getting shoes on incredibly challenging
The concept of "self-lacing shoes" sounded like a tech-bro dumb concept until I read your comment. Now I wonder why it isn't more common, thinking about it, there are quite a lot of people that would be helped by that...
The concept actually came from the 1989 movie "Back to the Future 2," where the main character, Marty, played by Michael J Fox, traveled to Oct 21, 2015 and put on a pair of self-lacing shoes.
On the actual date, Nike gave a pair of self-lacing shoes to Michael J Fox. They weren't self-lacing like in the movie but were controlled by the app, which helped him out because he suffers from Parkinson's disease.
That's why it sounded like a joke to me, I heard about those ones, but not about them giving it to the actor. It's a very nice invention !
Nike been working on this self lacing problem for at least 2 decades since the limited edition Nike Mag inspired by back to the future.
The latest iteration is this easy slip shoes : https://www.forbes.com/sites/timnewcomb/2021/02/01/nike-creates-first-fully-hands-free-shoe/
I have a pair of those! Good shoe, wouldn’t wear it anywhere that needed my feet to dangle like a rollercoaster though.
Well, velcro and elastic . . .
Nike now uses "Flyease" for some of their models to help people who have these disabilities
I saw some of them, but pretty sure those are for females?
Honestly, I hate laces. Always hate that I need to lace up my shoes and took up minutes before I can go and that some laces can get loosened-up just by walking. Really glad that Slip-ons are getting more popular.
No, not for females. They put flyease into running, training, casual shoes, etc
The flyease tech in the air forces make them almost like slip-ons with laces
Oh huh…. I remember seeing the ads for it few months back and was checking on it and apparently it was more for women. I guess I did not look at it closely enough.
Yeah, its almost like slip-on with laces, but I do like slip-ons and sometimes I do need a lace shoes style, so that’s why I was interested. Guess I need to look into this abit further. I usually used Skechers because they are kinda the only one who are making slip-ons for my feet size.
I have a pair of Jordans that have this feature and I love them for everyday errands shoes. They’re calling them “easy on” now I think.
Have you ever tried the elastic laces that runners use? Once you get them in your shoe and fit the first time, you never need to adjust them. Paired with a long-handled shoe horn, I haven’t bent down to put my shoes on or tie them in years.
If it could be controlled by an app, it could be controlled by a button.
and it is on these shoes, you have buttons you can lace them with
Wouldn't a "step in" shoe without laces work much much better for that?
Wouldn't they buy shoes without laces? Slip-ons or Velcro?
These shoes specifically don't make putting your shoes on easier in the slightest other than the actual act of tying the laces. They are a gimmick theyre not meant for anyone that can't tie their shoes. Flyease are but these are not. These came out after the fast fit lines and were just a motorized version of that tech.
My friend who has one arm and also wears different braces on her legs, that are slightly didn’t sizes.
Pretty much everything you see something that looks “Lazy” stop and realize that there is someone with a disability super excited that it’ll make their life easier.
I broke all the ribs on my left side in a boo-boo right before Halloween last year, and my girlfriend had to tie my shoes for me until like February. She never complained, but I felt like such a loser having her do that for me. Self trying shoes would have been great.
Retired UPS drivers (Source: I am a current UPS driver)
I think these are obsolete by stretchy shoes with elastic laces.
“An escalator can never break; it can only become stairs.”
Great. Guess I’m just not gonna tie my shoes.
A tragedy of our times. Let us never forget the departure of the app for the self-lacing shoe and the all the bittersweet memories it has brought us, each memorable in their own way.
Watch over us like angels, Adapt.
The most unAmerican company is Nike today, happy July 4th all! Nike is the worst!
So thaaaaat’s why NKE stock dropped 20%
could you use that flipper thing to take the code?
Weird that Nike Software is less durable than their shoes.
Umm… all shoes can be manually operated.
All of them. Great work, Nike.
How will people change the colors?
Agree, why fix what ain't broke? Let the app do its thing
Sneakers with an APP is an automatic no from me anyway.
I can understand why such a thing might make sense for some people who have disabilities; but that is pretty niche. Its unclear to me why anybody else would want assistive technology, its just one more thing that will eventually break.
It reminds me of the foot bar on my friend's escalade that goes up and down when you open the door. The only reason for that mechanism is so it can break and need to be repaired/replaced. Literally the only reason it exists.
Anyone that bought these shoes should get a refund
“But the shoes can still be manually operated”
Thank fuck. Crisis averted, people.
Maybe time to stop buying Nike products?
Wtf why is this even a thing
I hope companies realize their crappy IoT sunset policies are warning people off IoT devices.
You need a phone to wear shoes?

This is great for obesity. Well done Nike.
You mean you’ll have to use your hands? That’s like baby shoes!
why would anyone need an app for shoes?
You can set preset lace fits, play with the lighting presets, get an alert when your shoes are charged. I'd have liked a few more colourways for the adapt automax ie a Mag version
If you can't tie your own shoe, one, you're lazy and two, you overpaid for those shoes.
